4.3
2023-04-20
This version updates the symbols to high definition Smarty Symbols(R)!
First, no vocabulary has been harmed in the creation of this update.
Every word in the app is still in the exact same place as it has been since the app was released in 2011. If you’ve moved and added words, your individual vocabulary will also be in the exact same place.
BUT the symbols are changing. As much as possible, we’ve chosen the high definition equivalent to the existing symbols. If that wasn’t possible, we chose the new Smarty Symbol for the word.
We know a lot of people are sensitive to change, and we haven’t taken that lightly. We’ve updated the symbols for 3 main reasons.
1. Diversity
Barbara Fernandes and the wonderful Smarty Symbols team have created characters to allow for more diverse skin tones and ages. It’s long overdue for us to include this new symbol library.
2. High definition quality
The new symbols are crisp and clear and also allow for better quality screen shots and printed materials. These new symbols will also match the symbol library on the Smarty Symbol website. So, if you’re looking to create support materials, you can search by the category or file name of the SfY symbol to find them on the Smarty Symbols website.
3. Larger symbol library
This update increases the symbol library from 11,000 to 31,000 symbols. You can still take pictures and choose photos from your camera roll, but now there are an additional 20,000 symbols to choose from as well.

1. Words in a message now may be edited. To edit a message, long-press or double-tap a word to display a cursor to the right of the word, then add or delete words. After speaking an utterance, the cursor is positioned automatically at the end of the utterance and hidden.
2. Separate play/pause and stop buttons replace the single play/pause button to make it easier to control speech.
3. Added a button to hide/show the navigation bar on late-model iPhones that have notches. The previous swipe gestures work as before.
4. "Squished" is automatically renamed to "squirted" when fetching all existing vocabularies and when restoring the factory vocabulary. This was a weird typo that we fixed.
5. When the “I” core word is linked to a second page, selecting “i” on the second page results in displaying an upper case “I” in the message.
6. Documents such as the Programming Guide and AACtion Plan now display in the familiar QuickLook interface that displays thumbnails for navigation, allows searching, markup, printing, and saving a copy of the document outside of SfY.
7. Restored proper behavior of Manual Whisper Mode.
8. Editing history is now available! Vocabulary added or deleted is now logged to History.
9. When exporting History data, History data entries that don’t have an associated word, such as turning Babble on or off, should leave the first column empty, but did not. This has been fixed.
10. SfY 4.2 requires iOS 13.0 or above.
