• The text input cell no longer disappears when scrolling down and back up again.
• You can now see your app version number at the bottom of the settings screen — this information is included in any feedback emails you send me through the app to help with diagnosing any future issues.

Thanks to everyone who reported bugs to me!

Keep your eyes peeled for a big update coming in September with a number of improvements!

Recording & Exporting
• Speak now features a record button/feature that allows you to record what you do in the app and, importantly, the speech audio output.
• The recordings can be exported to Camera Roll, or shared.

Repeat
• Choose how many times you would like your phrase to be repeated.

Bug Fixes & Enhancements
• Bug fixes (in particular for iPads using the Favourites and History features).

Favourite Phrases & Phrase History
• Speak now features ‘favourite’ phrases — simply hold the favourites button (the one with the star on) to add a new phrase.
• Speak also features phrase history which store all the phrases that have been spoken.

Redesigned Voice Picker
• The Voice Picker is now presented in a beautiful, fullscreen view with a blur effect for extra awesomeness.
• Each voice has a sample button so you can quickly hear what each one sounds like.
• Voices are now named, making it easier to distinguish the gender of each one. I strongly recommend that you upgrade to at least iOS 9 as voices are handled more elegantly.

Bunch of New Settings
• Save the text in the input field when the app closes, and load it again when it reopens. Similar settings to save the pitch, rate and voice.
• Stop speaking if the Clear button is pressed mid-sentence.
• Clear the input text once Speak is pressed.
• Volume slider.

General UI Enhancements
• Larger buttons that look nicer and are easier to press.
• Text in the app now respects the user’s Text Size preference. To adjust this, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size.
• Minor tweaks throughout.

Performance & Optimisations
• Optimised for iOS 10.
• Updated to run on all those shiny new iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus devices.
• Squashed those pesky bugs which resulted in poor performance in the Voice Picker.

It is with a hint of sadness that Speak bids farewell to iOS 7 in this update.

I hope you enjoy the update, and, as ever, if you have any comments/suggestions, feel free to drop me an email: [email protected]

Speak has been completely rewritten from the ground up and boasts a modern, sleek user interface.

Pressing the return key now speaks the input (previously this would dismiss the keyboard) - thanks for the suggestion, Julian!

- iPad Pro support.
- Under-the-hood improvements.
- Optimised for the latest iOS version.
- Supports iOS 7 onwards (previously only supported iOS 8 onwards).

Apple Watch Support!
- The Phrases screen contains 6 phrases (these can be edited in the Apple Watch App on your iOS device). Just tap a phrase to say it! The Speak app on the iPhone doesn't even have to be open for this sorcery to work!
- Swipe to the Settings screen to adjust voice settings. These include Rate, Pitch, your iOS device volume and the accent with which the phrase is spoken. If you need to reset these settings, just Force Touch!

General Improvements & Bug Fixes
- Default language is now selected depending on your region.
- Accents are ordered alphabetically making it easier to find the one you're looking for.
- Voice settings (Pitch, Rate and Accent) are now saved when you close the app and loaded when you next open it. The settings also live sync across your iOS device and Apple Watch!
- More streamlined interface (slightly smaller input text box which dismisses the keyboard if you drag down or hit the return key). The accent picker is now collapsable too.
- Rather than stopping music when speaking, the app now ducks the volume of other sources (e.g. Music) and talks over them.

I hope you enjoy the update! As always, feel free to drop me an email with any suggestions or comments: [email protected]

Enx,
Wonderful Text-to-Speech App
This app is GREAT!!! I had surgery in my throat earlier this year and was unable to speak for two weeks--this app immensely helped me get through that time. I found the adjustable aspects extremely creative as well as entertaining. You can change the pitch and speed of the voice, and you can choose from a huge list of various accents! I'm glad I found this app, and I would recommend it to anyone who needs something like it. Not being able to speak if a very trying experience, and having this app to help out as well as add some entertainment value into your life is very nice :)
dusty_jr,
Speak - works
Took a few days for me to finally figure out that the book icon is a history of all phrases spoken and the star (when pressed for over a second) shows the phrases that were saved by a quick press. Hey I’m 75, it takes a while for this foggy brain🤪. I like the app. I just had major surgery and had my voice box removed, so this helps, especially with kids. I have an electronic larynx that I’m still learning how to use. And in a month or two I should be able to use my new voice.
Max 71530006,
Recommended to everyone
This app has great potential and very interesting features. I love this app. The other reviewers are complaining about the recording feature, and i do think that it does need some tweaking, but it works a lot better than what it did when it was introduced. I have an iPad air 2 and so I needed that updated. And if both people have the application, you can send text to speech voices back and forth. Try this application.
PowerObject!,
Some shortcomings
Why are default and more preferred SIRI male/female voices are missing?

When a phrase is spoken, do not add it to the list again redundantly if it already exists in the list because the list grows too long quickly. Just sort the existing item in the list to the top to show it as a recent item.

Why can’t we record just the audio instead of screen recording? It says synthesizer but does not have this capability forcing us to import the video into another app to yank out audio. Please see other apps on the store like speak4me how they do it and they don’t claim as synthesizers.
ad1325,
Awesome app for writers and avid readers.
I use this app to help check my writing. It makes it easy to find misspelled words, grammar mistakes, and inconsistencies. It can be used as an additional step in the proofreading phase. I’ve pasted a 50,000 word piece, and it loaded and began reading it in seconds.

It’s great for listening to an e-book during your commute as well. Its a great app overall, and some of the voices sound more realistic and convincing than any other similar app out there.
Jim Bingham,
Outstanding and useful app
This app really shows how technology can help people. I would give it 6 stars if I could. I use it with an iPad and keyboard when my TMJ makes it painful to talk. Thank you for creating this app. One small improvement for usability would be to have the text input box automatically active after you press the enter key, so you could keep typing without having tap in the box again to enable typing.

Gave Me A Voice Again!
I mysteriously lost my speech ability 3 months ago. My voice is hardly a whisper. Speak has given me the ability to communicate again! It’s integrated into predictive text on my phone which makes it even easier to use. A bonus feature is the call integration. I can now talk to my family on the phone again. Now if I can only make my thumbs move faster. Lol
SheCrocky,
Love It
I just had vocal cord surgery and this is the most awesome thing ever wish I would have found it 2 days ago. It was after writing notes and having them read by the other person that I thought there has to be something out there easier. Then I found this. Makes this so much easier. Thank you! I was surprised the hospital did not inform me of such an app.
Roams in Red Headphones,
Great until recently
This app is really handy for the times when I go nonverbal, and is mostly accessible. There is a wide variety of voices to choose from, which I love, but recently a few of the voices became unavailable, in particular the enhanced English voices. My go-to voice was Lee (enhanced) for non verbal communication, as it sounded less robotic than most of the normal voices. Unfortunately in recent weeks I have found that my “second voice” is no longer available, and that I am restricted to the more robotic varieties of voice.
CJack123,
This has been amazing!
I had my tonsils taken out and I can’t talk. I can write down some things for my husband but my kids aren’t old enough to read. This way I can communicate with them through the app. It is also a lot faster than writing on a dry erase board which was my original plan. Thank you so much to the app developers. This is incredible.
