Description

Engage every student in playful STEAM learning with the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ App. Designed for use with the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Portfolio, the SPIKE App
is a powerful and inclusive tool that helps teachers facilitate engaging, hands-on STEAM learning. LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential and LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime encourage students of all learning levels to move from simple explorations to tackling increasingly complex real-world challenges through building and coding.

Intuitive, Exciting, and Fun
The SPIKE App provides multiple intuitive coding environments which, when combined with SPIKE Prime or SPIKE Essential, offer a naturally adaptive, physical, and digitally creative system that teachers and students alike love to use. Students first progress from using simple icon-blocks to word-block coding based on Scratch, and finally Python to code their creations and bring STEAM learning to life. The SPIKE App delivers exciting and playful learning experiences for students of all abilities.

Accelerate STEAM Learning
In addition to Getting Started material for both SPIKE Essential and SPIKE Prime, the SPIKE App includes 10 unit plans containing standards-aligned lessons with integrated building instructions for primary and secondary school students. These units engage students in meaningful STEAM challenges using playful lessons with clear intentionality and grade progression, scaffolded to support teachers and students in building essential skills. The accompanying online lesson plans support teachers with a wealth of accessible, interactive support material, giving them everything they need to bring STEAM learning safely and sustainably into their classrooms.

Build STEAM Confidence
Future-proof your students’ skills and make them confident lifelong learners by giving them unlimited possibilities for playful, hands-on STEAM learning with the LEGO® Learning System. The SPIKE Portfolio is part of the LEGO® Learning System’s range of interconnected solutions that can be introduced individually or as a complete system. They supplement each other, and together, they unlock unlimited learning opportunities. When combined with SPIKE Essential or SPIKE Prime, the SPIKE App allows students to apply their learning and go deep into coding, technology, and digital integration. They develop computational thinking skills using a progression of icon-block, word-block, and text-based coding. Programming a SPIKE Essential or SPIKE Prime multi-port Hub and connecting motors and sensors with a system of LEGO elements encourages students to build, tinker, and experiment - progressing from simple creations to complex structures and mechanisms. They learn to program, think like engineers, test and tweak designs, debug and optimize, operate with integers, play with data, create stories with LEGO® Minifigures, prepare for FLL (FIRST® LEGO® League) competitions, and more!

*** IMPORTANT***
This isn't a standalone educational app. This app is used to program SPIKE Essential and SPIKE Prime, which are sold separately. Please contact your local LEGO® Education reseller for further information.

JeffVyd,
A joy compared to EV3
Pros: Reliable Bluetooth, fast boot and load, Scratch is more intuitive than Labview, great hardware (better gyro, wheels, built-in stall detection, absolute motor position). Can run Python (not via this app). Every piece is a better shape from the brick to motors. Parallelism is easier.

Not cons: I don’t really miss the display, menus, or extra buttons on EV3. Tilting, gestures, or streaming mode provide the additional triggers. Watching variables and sensor values over Bluetooth is easy. I don’t miss the IR stuff.

Slight cons: No logging, My Blocks must pass return values using globals or messaging, sound recording seems temporarily missing, the color sensor specs are a little worse, but line following still works well at 100Hz.
K a l e i a P.,
Awesome app, also I have some solutions for some issues
This app is really good. I use it for first lego league, the coding stuff is awesome!

If you can’t connect to your hub, you should try two things.
1. If the underside of the hub is hollow, you need to put in the rechargeable battery. The rechargeable battery is another yellow blocky thing in your kit, smaller than the Hub. Just slide the battery into the hollow part of the Hub, and it should work fine.
2. First, close the SPIKE window if it’s already open, Then, turn on your Hub by holding the round button. Connect to your hub in your Bluetooth section of your settings, and THEN open the SPIKE window.

If there aren’t any building instructions, you have to download a unit plan first. Just click “Unit Plans” or tap the “Units” section at the bottom and download one.

If you are coding something and the Hub icon at the top is orange/yellow and says the word “Connect”, your Hub is not connected. If it has a blue outline, then your Hub is connected.
karmadispencer,
Units keep deleting
The 6 different units have to be re-downloaded ALL the time. It’s unbelievably frustrating when every time I want to get on the app with the kids and do an activity and find that all the units need to be downloaded again. It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t take so long but they’re fairly large file sizes. Other than that it’s a great app and easy for the kids to use.
dokein,
Initial connection issues sour the experience
My enthusiasm for the Spike Prime platform was immediately dampened in the first steps of the "getting started" tutorial when the app would not connect to the hub via bluetooth. Searching online support suggested updating the hub's OS, which must be done via USB the first time. Computer had only USB-C ports, so I had to order an adapter to continue. OS update completed, but didn't fix the bluetooth problem. I was finally able to get it to connect wirelessly when I skipped the tutorial and created a new program. Once connected, I was able to go back and start the tutorials.
DedGecko,
Bluetooth Connectivity Non-Functional On iPad Pro
The App works, however attempts to connect the Spike Hub to the App via Bluetooth results in a warning that the Hub needs to be updated - which can only be done via a Windows or Mac. Upon connecting the Spike Hub to a Windows machine running the latest version of the application, the Hub is updated. Disconnecting the Hub from the PC, and then reattempting to connect back to the iPad Pro via the App results in the same error message - Update the Hub. But the Hub is already updated! So basically - the portability offered by Bluetooth connectivity is dead... Until this is fixed, one-star and I do not recommend anyone procure this system until this is addressed.
fywsgxsygxsq,
Amazing, but glitchy
The Spike app is a joy to have and it gives step-by-step problems to fix. But when I am trying to connect my hub, it will not work, how many times I try. Rebooting my device, reinstalling, nothing really works. I don’t know if it is the hub or my device, but overall very good app to use. Especially if trying out for FLL Leauge
the builder that loves lego.,
Keeps crashing
Dear lego. Please fix the bug that causes the app to keep crashing. When i want to delete a project it crashes. When i have more than 1 project then i lose all my progress and then crashes. Please fix.
MishulaT,
good but taking a long time conecting hub
good but taking a long time conecting hub(but not always.)I noticed that this version includeded 2in1 kits & also includes step-by-step instuctions & teacher resources & more units then the previous version
lego 8,
Absence of building instructions +
Downloaded once and no building instructions on app. Updated iPad and downloaded again and still no building instructions. This issue, the kit having little instruction on what to do to get started, and confusing info on lego education site, equals for us, a very not so easy beginning experience compared to we do 2.0. It would be great if lego could address functionality challenges. Thank you.
Alenaroses,
Software is buggy-- hard time using it for my class
I use these kits for my engineering class. We have had problems with the hub connection for 4/12 classes so far this year. I have spent hours on the phone with customer support, and it's still unpredictable. Otherwise the system is great.
