Description

Spirit Roots is a traditional 2D platformer where you run, jump, fight, evade traps, collect coins, and beat bosses. With a stitched-together artwork, the visual will remind you of the scenes from the movie Coraline.

STORY OF SPIRIT ROOTS
Long ago, on the outskirts of a small, but undoubtedly, very warlike star system, armed conflict raged for a hundred years among the system’s inhabitants.

The fighting was so fierce that in the end only one small piece remained of each of the planets. At that point, the inhabitants of all of the planets decided that they would have to stop fighting in order to survive. So, they stitched together the remaining pieces of their worlds into one large planet with a single, absolute condition: no one could violate anyone else’s borders.

But what happens when someone breaks this rule? Let’s find out!

GAME FEATURES:
- 5 worlds with completely different atmospheres, gameplay mechanics, and enemies
- 50 levels
- 3 Difficulty settings: Easy, Normal and Hard
- 10 kinds of enemies and dozens of gameplay mechanics

AUDIO AND VISUAL DELIGHT:

Busheeee,
Good simple game, still has bugs and...
It’s a great game, graphic music etc great. Not much of a story though, no build up of the intro. I agree with the previous reviewer, the camera depth and movement is not ideal given your gameplay requires precision. Reacting to enemies and obstacles gets annoying and you struggle to visualize the space you playing in. Does not exactly play freely and flow as a result. The last it is crashing, a lot more in dark forest almost at every level, when you die.

Thanks for all bug fixes. Overall it’s a wonderful game. Definitely worth playing. Rating changed to 5
Pumanchu,
Beautiful, enjoyable game with a few possible annoyances.
I agree mostly with other reviewers in that the deaths do get annoying and feel a bit cheap at time. I also feel that the camera is a little close, making jumps and enemies hard to see. I realize that you are going for a sort of old school feel in that aspect. I also think that a three-hit system is more favorable, as a lot of platformer games use it presently. A few other things that bother me some what are the noise the character makes every time he moves gets a little annoying and the way the camera moves with you when you are moving but moves back to you when you stop, combined with the field of depth, tend to make me a little nauseated at times. One addition I would like to see is button location and/or sizing options. I realize some of this is nitpicking and only my opinion but it is because I really love everything else about it. I love all the art and animations a great deal and I like the characters, music and the story a lot as well. It is because of this that I decided to write a review. I enjoy your work and look forward to future projects. Thank you.
Kjpep,
Looks great. Full stop.
The world you created looks great and it’s what got me to buy the game. I was excited to see what the story of this world would be, but sadly, no story. The game starts cold (unless there was a story that didn’t play for me?). No idea why I’m on this quest, who the bad guys are, or why there are little ghosts (?) hovering around me. Give me a reason to keep playing.

I get you’re going for the old school feel with the instant deaths, the difference here is the you have no space to react to the pitchfork flying at you. Contra gave you a very zoomed out screen with time to dodge the bullets (plus, at the time, the graphics weren’t good enough to have tighter cameras). You made a beautiful game that requires a close camera and therefore no means to react or protect yourself from a quick flying pitchfork from close range.

Finally, is there any character ability development? I’m 3 or 4 levels in and would love to know there’s some twists or something to keep this from becoming monotonous.
cren110,
Wow this is great!
This game reminds me of the old gaming I used to love where you needed some skill to beat levels. It kind of feels like ninja garden or shinobi with a cartoon exterior. I haven't tried it with a controller yet but haven't had any issues with the onscreen controls. I don't think it's too hard but I grew up in the 80s and 90s with Nintendo and Sega so I'm used to games like this. I have to get back to playing but wanted to let everyone know not to worry about the other reviews and try the game if you like classic platforming games!

I agree with booo. It’s very irritating that you die after one hit. Leave the three hearts or change it to two and just lose a heart if you get hit. You have to play the level perfect to pass it. Lets compare to MARIO. At least you can get bigger at times which you earned to give you that second chance. Maybe you can earn a shield or something. I actually deleted it after 5 minutes of playing then gave it another chance and still feel the same way. I agree with the noise of the character being annoying when moving back and forth as well.
ceehound,
Super fun and long
Awesome game. Varied levels and I’ve been playing it for months (taking my time). Great graphics and sounds. Only draw back is the lame sound the character makes when moving .
AlexisKay12,
Needs update!!!
The dark woods has a lot of issues. If you die on a platform, when you restart at the checkpoint, he keeps sliding as if he’s on a platform and hits something and dies. Also sometimes when you die it messes up the rhythm of the spiders, making it impossible to get through them. Sometimes when you die a witch will move into the center of the spiders where it’s impossible to survive. I really love this game and want to finish it, but keep getting hindered by bugs, hence the 3 stars. Please please update!!!
Reia Rozenxhia,
You need to work on your buttons
A lot of the time the buttons don’t react as quickly as it should which puts a real damper on enjoying the rest of it if you can’t get past level 3 cause the character never jumps at the time you need him to. Seriously, right now I want a refund but if it gets fixed I’d get the game again. Right now there’s just no point in paying for something you can’t even play without wanting to throw your phone against the wall.
Dad Times Two,
Too easy to die
I’m no greenhorn when it comes to platform games, and while “Spirit Roots”features a smoothly animated and generally responsive and easy to control player character (I had issues with double jumps because my thumb kept missing the jump icon on the second jump), it’s too easy to die in combat. You get hit once and you’re dead, and it’s hard to see the enemy projectiles. I deleted this game out of annoyance after about 15 minutes of play.

Make Life A Heart System For 5 Stars
Love this game, the look, the feel, the creativity. I even enjoy the loose controls. But. I hate the life system. One and done, then start over at a checkpoint. Give me three hearts, and an occasional heart drop, and I would sing this game’s praises. It is such a good game. This one small change would carry it to five stars for me. As it is, I can’t even keep it on my phone (though I’ve tried multiple times). I say this out of love — if I didn’t care, I wouldn’t say a word.
