Made some UI tweaks to clarify what swell is impacting the surf most. The UI also now indicates when a surf quality factor (like tide or wind) is less impactful at a given surf spot.

Not much has changed on an iPhone, but on an iPad or Mac you'll see a big difference. Now your search results live in the sidebar, so you can view them next to the forecast details. This is pretty helpful when you're trying to decide between surf spots. As always, ping me with any feedback. -- Jack

Long overdue... I'm adding swell details. There's often than one swell in the water and the current UI doesn't account for that very well. This update gives you the tools to look at each swell independently; which can be helpful when there's a combo swell, or a long period swell hiding beneath a bunch of local wind swell. As always, ping me with any feedback.

Hey! I merged Lists and Saves since this was pretty redundant functionality. Hopefully I didn't botch your Lists in the process, but if I did, sorry about that. These breaking changes should be a one time thing. Other than that I moved the filters right into the forecasts UI. Having these under a modal felt like way too many taps. By the way, it's sort of a secret feature, but if you never noticed, you can tap the days of the week to filter by day. You can even long press to filter multiple days. Well... it's my birthday, which seems like a good enough to reason to ship a new version. I've been noodling on this for a while. It doesn't actually achieve what I initially set out to do, but it lays the groundwork for some interesting future stuff. The UI looks a little different, but the big change is slash commands. Slash commands allow you to build these more complex queries; so you can find good surf more easily. For example, I often use "/highlight" to show me only spots that match my highlight settings near me. But, say I'm going for a trip to Big Sur in a few days, but I still want to know how the waves are in Santa Cruz I will search for "Santa Cruz /or Big Sur" to scope the results to just those two places. I think you'll find slash commands pretty handy. One quick apology, this build resets your saved settings. Sorry about that. It's a one time thing. I needed to do this in order to lay the groundwork for what comes next. Stay tuned...

I'm introducing a subscription. In order to run this app, each month I pay for a bunch of infrastructure; servers, etc. To ensure that I can continue to provide this service well into the future I need to be able to recoup some of those costs. So starting with this version I'm asking high usage users to pay a small monthly fee. Spitcast will still be free for up to 5 days per month. But if you value the service enough that you use it more than that, please subscribe. It's only $0.49 per month; the cheapest monthly subscription rate Apple allows. I appreciate your support.

Most notable update is the new regional summaries. Use these to get a glance at a group of surf spots without needing to study each forecast. I personally use these to keep tabs on the regions that are a day-trip away. Should I stick to my local breaks or hit the road?
The other big feature is spot hiding. In the past you could use the main interface to see what's going on at every break, or the bookmark button to just see your saved surf spots. Now if there's some surf spot that you just never surf and don't care to know anything about you can just hide it from the main interface.
Keep digging around in the app and you'll find lots of other tweaks for iOS 14.

Great California Coast App
I’ve been experimenting with the various free and less expensive apps since I decided to simplify my recurring subscription charges to too many services.
I really appreciate the fundamental data that’s reported on Spitcast, and though I have not sat down and charted a direct comparison between this and the National Weather Service’s and NOAA’s Northern California data and forecasts, this has seemed like an accurate amalgamation of what a surfer wants to know. Naturally there will be spots like Ocean Beach San Francisco where/ when it should be good, it’s too wonky because the night winds the night before ruined it, even if it’s light wind the next morning. But I think these are the variables we get to learn through experience. I mean, an app only needs to spoon feed so much.
Also I appreciate the data for some specific spots that don’t get as much attention in this regard. On this app, I don’t feel like it’s ruining anything.
The circles took me a second to figure out, but it’s pretty intuitively obvious that the app is focusing our attention on good surf conditions (vs, I guess, mediocre or bad ones).
I plan on adding this high value, low cost app as a subscription in my new streamlined suite of similar high value, reasonably priced apps.

Great app
I previously use the Spitcast website and just finally got the app. It is lightweight, fast, and super clear. The coverage of West Coast spots is excellent. The graphics are good and it is extremely easy to use. I would recommend it to anyone headed for the beach.

Spitcast is really great.
The spitcast app is nice and streamlined. My old phone loads it right away. It is an easy thing to check every day to see when the waves are good.

Website vs app
You don’t show swell direction, nor the hourly specs when you used to be able to touch the time line. Then a pop up would give info. Liked the website better than the app. I hope you tweak the app a bit to work more like the website. I’ve been using Spitcast for 2-3 years. Thank you for listening and letting me see when and where to get barreled.

Graphics a little small
Nice concept and simple interface. However I found the graphics to not really be optimized for mobile viewing. Size of charts needs to be bumped and try to display less break info on one each page/screen. I’m fine with navigating through pages but not with squinting.

Usually wrong
Rarely ever correct. Conditions, water temp, etc... usually incorrect. Not sure if it’s not being updated frequently enough or what.
