Description

SrutiBox simulates an Indian harmonium, used as a base tone in Indian music and in spiritual practices of chanting and droning.

SrutiBox 1.4 now works under iOS8, iPhone 4,5,6, and 6+ sizes, has a slightly different look, and fixes a few bugs that you may have encountered.

SrutiBox is a synthesizer, creating drones with various timbres and precise intonations that blur the distinction between tones, timbres and chords. The drone can be fairly static or undergo slow modulation and harmonic change. It now plays in the background under iOS 4.0 like many other music apps!

Pop over to http://www.jhhl.net/iPhone/SrutiBox/ and listen to some examples!

"I wanted you to know that I have made my debut in Vienna a couple of weeks ago as an iPHONEist.
I played two simultaneously - one with sruti box and the other with a variety of apps.
I am enjoying sruti box immensely! Thank you!"
— Dr. Pauline Oliveros

I also have another Droning app, Droneo, which has a similar interface, but more droning options!

SrutiBox uses 12 "reeds" which can be tuned to a great number of scales, randomly detuned, and chorused and modulated. The pitch interval and volume of each "reed" can be set individually, making for a wide variety of drones. The reeds can be set to various timbres suitable for drones, including vocal-like timbres and low frequency-friendly chirps.

A special iPhone feature of SrutiBox is that you can wave the phone in an imitation of pumping the bellows, adding a touch of realism to the simulation.

SrutiBox can also be used as a pitch source for instrument tuning purposes, or as an aid for learning the difference between Just and Equal Tempered intervals.

As with other iPhone/iPod touch audio applications, it'll sound better through headphones, although in a quiet room, it's quite effective! Make sure to use the volume controls on the side of the phone to set the volume level you like.

Version history

1.4.0
2014-10-13
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Updated for IOS8 (and iOS7!), and also for iPhone 4, 5,6 and 6+!
With a new, flatter look, same old SrutiBox inside though.
1.3
2010-08-19
New in Version 1.3:
-- Base frequency now has a fine tuning slider (a feature ported from Droneo).
-- iOS 4.0 play-in-background enabled.

1.2.2
2009-10-09
Version 1.2.2 fixes some minor bugs and tweaks the available timbres a bit.
- the base frequency can be set down to 0.01, which is good for impulse experiments.
- new Impulse 2 timbre
- faster building vocal timbres.
- bug having to do with non-scrolling Instructions fixed.
V 1.2.1
2009-03-05
Rather a lot has been added to SrutiBox in V 1.2.1.

Features:
- "Churn" now controlled by tapping the churn/chorus slider label. No more "churn" button.
- New lower octave of pitch settings (A0, Bb0, etc.), useful for high harmonics.
- Churn now churns using distinct Timbre settings.
- UI reorganized to make that change more useful
- New info and save buttons
- Save called "Save" instead of "Add" in save screen.
- Saved settings save a whole "patch" and not just the reed volumes.
- New Impulse Timbre for low frequency explorations.

Fixes:

- Setting churn rate no longer resets the sound to use the left volume settings.
- Increased number of buffers to help get over some breaks when multi tasking.
- Vocal timbres now are generated more quickly - there's still a little gap in the sound when choosing them.

bob oneill,
Great app, but I need some help testing something
Is the new version causing anyone else's iPhone to overheat and stay overheated until the app is uninstalled? I had this installed for a couple days before I tried it. After trying it, I didnt notice anything odd, but a few hours later my iPhone felt really warm. I thought it was a body heat thing, since the phone was kept in an inside coat pocket. But the temp never dropped, even when I kept the device off-charger and near a fan.

At some point I recalled that v1.0 of Sruti mentioned slight heating while Scrutibox was played...I guessed that maybe some function in version 1.1 wasn't releasing all of its resources, and this was causing some sort of runaway heating...to test this, I uninstalled Srutibox. I noticed almost instantly that my iPhones temp was normal.

Has anyone else experienced this?

This is not a knock on the app at all...I really enjoy it and wish I could find a way to port the sound to my Boss BR-600...but I can't play it if it's going to overheat my phone.
boboneill,
great app...a must have
this app has been good since 2008 but the 2014 iOS 8 updates rock! the app sounds great, looks great and it worth its weight in bytes.

get this app today!!

p.s., i gave the app 5 stars despite it missing audiobus support; my stars are freely given, without expectation of audiobus delivery later on. i would, however, pay for audiobus support.
bayboychiefs,
Don’t buy/ doesn’t sound like sruthi box
This app is useless, doesn’t sound anything like harmonium or sruthi box, doesn’t have intermediate tones like G# and is complete waste of your money. Their website link for information is not working either
GuruDavid,
Beautiful
Thank you for your huge effort to update this greet app!
Emoleash,
👍👍👍
I have been using this app for years. Love it. Dr. Pauline Oliveros?! That’s high praise.
Jonathanweb460,
thank you for the update!
essential app
Jai ananda,
Stupid App!!! Waste of $$$
Doesn’t sound at all like a Shruti box.
COMPLETE RIP-OFF!!

Ugly Box, Sweet Filling
I bought this after listening to the audio examples on the developer's site; it makes a surprising variety of timbres, and with the Churn feature, you can crossfade between any two for an animated sound. It's a lot deeper and sweeter-sounding than it appears from the drab Formica interface. I'm enjoying exploring alternate tunings and learning how harmonics layer to form chords and textures. I don't like the clicks you hear when changing some settings, and I told the developer an echo effect would make the drones even spacier, but he replied that would detract from the authenticity. (Bonus points for responding at length to my emailed suggestions!) He also said he'll be concentrating on his Droneo app, so I'll probably buy that next.
steve_1963,
Very cool
This is not, as one reviewer said, a "simple sine wave oscillator", it allows additive synthesis of 12 oscillators. While it may not match the authentic sound of a harmonium, it is in fact very cool. I agree that the sliders are a bit hard to control (it got easier when I found I could tap on the location I want it to go to, rather than trying to drag the button). My other complaint is that the help text is way too small to read; the zoom gesture did make the text larger, but then it was too hard to scroll. I'm only going to 4 stars because it is totally lacking in modulation options.

Quirky, But Enjoyable Program
Sadly it seems Mr. Lowengard is focusing on Droneo, but the srutibox is fun and *CAN* sound wonderful, if you're willing to play with the settings. I use a variety of noisemakers at night to help me get to sleep, and the problem with most of them is that they offer only a limited set of preprogrammed sounds. I enjoy the variety and customization that srutibox provides. Although a built-in sleep timer would be wonderful, you can use your ipod/iphone timer instead. Get this if you like drones and aren't afraid to fiddle and knobificate!
