Description

Create storyboards: draw, arrange, time, write, and animate.

Use the simple drawing interface to sketch a panel or import (with drag and drop) from any other app. Set the timing, write dialog, action, and SFX for each panel. Play the board back as an animatic to get a feel of your final project.

Export as a video, PDF, HTML, images, or text file.

Timing can be as small as a single frame, so real-time animations can be demonstrated within the board. Tap on the "scene" circles to increment the scene count (swipe to decrement).

Made for iPad, works on iPhone.

2020-12-30
Added an Audio Companion feature! You can now add an audio file to each board and have it play alongside your board and as part of the video export.

Add a file from the "Audio Companion" page; play a panel's snippet by tapping the vinyl record button. The FAQ/Manual will be updated with more details. The interface is currently simple, but simplicity is where I hope this app shines.

I've been wanting this feature since inception, and I'm happy to bring it to you today! As always, thank you to all the supportive emails requesting this feature.

Other enhancements in this update include:

* Much more precise "live" animation timing.
* New "board properties" pop-over to cleanup the top bar a bit, includes project details too.
* Moved the share button to the properties view.
* Better rounding (when required) when exporting video frames.
* Video export timing will display as a fraction if that option is selected in app settings.
* Fixed the board size chooser being too small.
* Fixed dark mode coloring in a few spots.
* Fixed some touch interaction problems introduced in iOS14 (e.g. in onion layer options, and detail text).
* Possible fix of rare "ghost project" bug when renaming a board.
* Made export progress bar opaque; no more clear gap!
2.15
2019-12-12
Small bug fixes and improved iOS 13 support.

* Fixed the layer popover not taking up vertical height as needed.
* Fixed the canvas not opening to fullscreen (iOS 13).
* Fixed grayscale color picker column showing the off-by-one wrong current color
* Improved layer opacity UX: now the value is "committed" every time you lift your finger from the slider -- this makes sure the value is saved even if you "tap out" of the layer popover.
* Possible fix of a rare and illusive "missing detail text when expanded" bug.
* Fixed text color problem in a few places (iOS).
2.14
2019-08-26
* Added thumbnail caching (memory and disk).
> This greatly improves board overview performance.
> New board button (a gear) can be used to clear (thus reset) the cache.
* Made large complex drawings "flatten" their layers.
> This greatly improves panel load time, canvas switching smoothness, and file size.
> Note: this removes the infinite undo history.
> You may experience one-time slightly longer loading when leaving panels made before this update.
* Fixed laggy opacity slider.
* Fixed slow layer popover display (introduced last update).
* Moved board zoom button next to other layout buttons.
* Small improvement to live playback.
* Other internal refactoring.

Caching and drawing flattening have been in the works for a while; thank you to those who contributed your large projects for testing.

* Fixed panel drawing reload when only the sequence number was changed.
* Layers now maintain opacity value when copied or dragged out.
* Incremental improvement to board load speed.
* Backend work toward future board thumbnail performance.
+ Added small indicator that user has Pro upgrade on main screen.
2.12
2019-08-14
* Fixed export crash half way on large and complex boards.
* Slightly improved stability for scrolling large boards (and work toward better scrolling performance).

* Fixed RTF export taking too long.
* Fixed HTML exporting images even when set not to.
* Gave TXT and RTF exports progress bars like the others.

+ Added two new board size options: 9:16 and 4:5.
+ Added custom board size (Pro only).
2.6
2019-03-04
+ Added lasso/selection transformation tool! This is version one of the feature, but I want to get it out to you all as soon as I could. (See below for how to use it.)

+ Two new available board sizes: square and A4 portrait ratio.
+ Label with the brushes current size next to slider.
* Fixed the brush slider jumping forward when just tapped.

* Fixed board duplication not properly refreshing the screen (and the renaming issue it would lead to).
* Fixed occasional board deletion not fully deleting the file.

+ Support for Apple Pencil 2 interactions.
* Other small backend improvements.

How to use lasso and translation:
At the moment, this is integrated into one button: the crosshair on the main toolbar. Press it once to start lassoing. Press again to cancel. The lasso will select the content on the active layer. Complete the lasso by tapping the point at the start of the lasso, this will then show a transformation box. Move, scale, or rotate, then press the crosshair again to complete the transformation.

Major update to the saving system! It is recommend to backup important work (via the share button) before updating, though not required. This has been a long time coming, and I'm happy to release it! Conversion to the new format will occur automatically when you first open the app.

Storyboard projects are now saved as document files stored in the user exposed app documents folder; accessible via the Files app (e.g. "On My iPad") or iTunes Files Sharing. This makes file management and backup easier!
While there are few visual/usage changes, there are improvements in how Storyboard projects are loaded and saved thanks to new system -- asynchronously. Overall, this update releases some previous constraints that were holding back other improvements.

Thank you to those you have sent kind words, they help inspire me to continue working on this!

Techical details for those interested:
Previously, drawing data was stored inside a hidden database blob, now each project is self contained within its own document package (".stbdx" files).
1.5
2018-05-28
+ Added keyboard shortcuts for external keyboards, including: new panel, undo/redo and next/previous frame. Hold down "command" within the screens of the app to see them all.

* Small bug fixes.
* Extra bounds checking for internal data.
1.3
2018-03-19
* Fixed a layer ordering not saving issue
* Prettier Default Board Name
+ Added official exporting and importing of full boards (note: old exports cannot be imported due to an internal change, should be more future proof from now on).
* Other smaller fixes

Thanks for the feedback, it's in part encouraging me to work on this more.
1.2
2018-03-10
* Fixed trying to play an empty board.
* Other small fixes and improvements

rengland77,
A few annoyances, but I still love it
Thank you for an affordable storyboard creator! Perfect drawing out a simple story. Having a few layers, a note area, and being able to include audio (to get timing right) is a big help as well. I found directions and videos, but doesn’t seem like you can make a selection on one frame, and then pasting it onto another. That would be helpful. I managed to white out a frame several times while trying, after drawing a selection around the whole frame. Confusing interface? The bug I’ve seen mentioned? I don’t know, but this tool is still really helpful.
Norddodo,
Too many bugs
I have purchased full version of this software but there are few annoying bugs. The most important - export doesn’t work. I have about 86 panels in my storyboard and every time I try to export it in any format the program crashes and closes. I have tried to export in any format that is available and none of them work. After trying everything I could I have found a workaround - turning off a watermark in settings fixed export issues. 2. Duplicating the panel within the workspace works sporadically. Sometime it works, sometime it only duplicates couple of last strokes. 3.Duplicating a panel within the EDIT menu crashes and closes the program. 4. The most annoying bug is that sometimes everything you draw on one of the layers vanishes. One moment it’s there, you come out of the panel into the storyboard view and it’s gone. You have to draw it all again. 5. You can’t export a single panel. This is very inconvenient if you’re making any changes!
I emailed the developer but never heard from them. Changing to one star.
I like Dr Pepper,
Overall extremely useful tool!
After seeing my friend’s iPad Pro and Apple Pencil in action, I decided to venture into using a dummy stylus to make storyboards with my iPad 2 mini. I watched a few tutorials on how to draw figures and faces, and jumped in to using the Storyboard app.

This app is incredibly simple and useful, and I’m amazed how quickly my boards are coming together. The straight line tool was hidden in the sub-pencil menu, and is incredibly useful, just keep in mind that turning it on breaks the eraser from functioning normally—it seems like nothing erases. This should be fixed to be enabled under an eraser sub-menu so they can function independent of each other.

The functionality of having layers, quickly cloning boards, and giving run time to boards so they can play is truly useful.

For the price, I give this app 5-stars. There are some things that would be nice:

The pencil thickness slider at the smaller end, it ramps down very quickly and I often have to try a few times to get the desired thickness. It shouldn’t be linear but rather slowly ramp the smaller diameters.

The ability to paste images would be nice.

There should be opacity and feathering for strokes.

A history of chosen colors at the top row of the swatches would be helpful, too.

Overall, this app is great!
BlackWing-602,
Losing Work is Unacceptable
I really wanted to like this app. The ability to organize your boards quickly and leave notes that can be exported and presented quickly and professionally into a PDF format was especially attractive to me.

That said, this software’s propensity for losing work is unacceptable. I am a very patient person, and I have a better tolerance for minor bugs and glitches than most — however, spontaneously deleting a particularly difficult panel after I had spent an hour toying and problem solving to get the right emotion and angle was infuriating.

I went through the settings and deactivated all touch and swipe actions hoping that perhaps it was human error and that the glitch could be resolved. Second redo of the board and the app started to bug out again. I tossed the drawing to my clipboard before closing the app thus saving my progress, but that’s two strikes and I’m not willing to chance a third.

I ultimately exported remaining image sequence to a folder and imported the layers into a tried an true software package (Procreate). It may not be built explicitly for boarding, but I will take the inconvenience of toggling off Layers to losing my work any day.

To the developer, maybe run a more extensive beta testing phase before releasing a software package I assume was intended for professional use — had I been working on a deadline this could have really shot me in the foot.

I am NOT a happy customer.
ciaramet101,
This app is great!… But
Don’t get me wrong I really like this app, but lately I’ve been having some problems…

I recently got this app so maybe I just don't know how it works completely but when I try to draw it doesn’t work. It will let me draw if I select straight line, but without that I can’t get it to let me draw anything. It was working before, but it suddenly just stopped working. Maybe I need to update it? Maybe I need to refresh the app again? Idk.

I also have a few suggestions. First of all it would be really nice to have a few more brushes, like maybe a paintbrush, pen and the pencil. It doesn’t need to be too fancy, but it would be really nice to have a small variety. It would also be cool if you could change the opacity for the brush. Of course these are just ideas to make story boarding a bit more interesting.

Other than that, great app, I like the design and simplicity it is while still having all the fundamental needs for a good storyboard.
Ninertrips,
Great App. If it had a timeline it'd be in a class all its own
I've done extensive research and workflow testing, across iOS and desktop applications in hopes of making the iPad Pro my main storyboarding tool. The drag and drop from procreate is amazing, I wish more apps let you do that.

The one feature I'd beg for is a visual timeline like an NLE. Even a basic timeline that let you see your shots in order and let you scrub to control playback would be a total game changer for story artists. As it is now you can reorder your shots and assign them a duration, which is nice, but if you look at storyboarder for desktop you will see how powerful it is to go sketch-> timeline.
RafRaf,
Great potential, but...
It is really close to be great and to be really useful.
It needs a filling tool, and maybe a pencil-like brush.
Others features should be the ability to add sound, either to record from the microphone or upload an mp3. The ability to create your own color palette would be great.
I have no idea who is behind this app, but its potential is really great. Maybe take a few inside from “storyboarder” app on Mac, and from boords, from the online service.
I would pay $40-50 a year to see those added to your app!
ElephanteBri,
Great feature set!
I set forth to endure the arduous process of storyboarding my idea when I found this app. With its natural workflow + sneaky powerful tools (onion skinning & layers to name a couple) however, I’m finding myself using this app to create essentially an animatic. I might be asking more of this app than it is capable of (way more scenes than you’d expect for a storyboard), we’ll see… So far, this app is exactly what I’ve been looking for in a storyboarding tool. With a more polished UI, this app would be wildly popular (if it isn’t already).
ComicFan007,
Best Storyboarding App in the iOS Store.
(Updated Review of version 2.3.)

I still maintain that this is the best storyboarding app on iOS, bar none.

Dark Mode has been added, which makes working with the app easier on the eyes. Keyboard Shortcuts have been added as well, which is very useful if you’re jotting ideas down at a rapid fire clip. And the ability to re-size the canvas during Editing Mode is a great addition.

I also found the iPhone version of the app to be an excellent port. The option to storyboard when I’m on the train or on a line is a liberating one. The iPhone version is just as functional as the iPad version (as it should be).

Grateful for Keely’s ongoing care and attention to the app. I’ve written emails to him a couple of times and he seems open to feedback. This is one neat program and I woul happily pay for an upgraded version just to support development if asked.
J-251,
Makes Animation Easier
This is a very useful and powerful application. I always think of new ideas for plots and yet, there’s no notebook around to write it down. This app changes everything. Now whenever I think of a new idea for an animation, I can draw it out onto this app. What’s more, since I can plan out animations easier, I can have a better idea on how exactly I should animate the scene. In conclusion, it’s easy to use and very convenient.
