Do you play friendly pickup sports, like hockey, soccer or basketball? Would you like help choosing which players to be on each team, so that everyone enjoys the game? TeamChooser will select the teams and make sure the game is fair. TeamChooser will work for pretty much any two-team game you can think of: rugby scrimmages, volleyball, baseball, and flag football.
TeamChooser uses a specialized algorithm developed over ten years of experimentation and revision.
Here’s how it works: enter the name of each player and give a rating for their level of effectiveness. At game time, you indicate who is there to play. Then, push a button and TeamChooser’s proprietary technology will divide the players into two perfectly-balanced teams. Everyone will have fun, not just the players on the winning team!
If you wish, you can balance the number of offense and defense players on each team, and you can pre-assign players to a specific team. If players show up after teams have been made, TeamChooser lets you freeze the assignments and add the new players to the teams. Also, you can manage any number of games, each with different players.

The Super Optimizer algorithm is much improved, and is now on by default. It is now as good as the classic algorithm for the simple cases, and better when you use constraints such as balance offence-defence, or pre-assign players to a specific side. Also, the display of the larger fonts (when you push the Aa button on the game screen) is now much better.

Great new features:
1. Late Arriving Players feature - when new players arrive after teams have been chosen and players have already dressed, this feature allows the new players to be placed on teams, and no more than 2 previously placed players will have their teams changed. This allows the quality of the teams to remain in balance.

3. An experimental 'super optimizer' will also permit the balancing of the quality of the offence and defence, along with the quantity.

New feature – you can share Games (with lists of players and their ratings) with others who use TeamChooser by exchanging files. These files are accessed from your phone through iTunes, as explained in the information screen of the app.
Three bug fixes:
1. A lower-quality team balance was chosen when players were pre-assigned and there was an odd number of players. Fixed.
2. Using a “/” as part of the game name caused a problem. The use of a “/” is now disabled, and user is given a warning if it is used.
3. If the tweak button was used in conjunction with the freezing option, the frozen teams wouldn’t remember the change made by the tweak. Fixed.

This version has the new, better selection algorithm (described in release 1.2) that does a better job of dealing with odd number of players. Also, selection method now does an extra optimization step that improves the quality of the result. Also, the selected team lists now gives the average rating of both teams; the closer these are, the better the balance.

App has crashed twice on me when I first started using it. Also whenever I try to add players and press "save" my players aren't being added.

Team Chooser is a great app!
I run a pick up mens hockey group, where each week, different players are present for the games. Picking even, fair teams has always been a challenge. With Team Chooser, I input the possible players, indicate if they are offense or defense (to ensure both teams have enough D) and then assign a numeric value to each player based on their impact on the game. (The app has great guidance on this critical part of the process) Then I create a game for that date, check off the players who will be playing and hit the pick teams button. Voila! Fair balanced teams are set. The app evens out the defense on both sides and we are good to go. There is a tweak button that swaps evenly ranked players as well. You can also pre assign a player or players (like the team captains) so they always end up on opposite sides, Its really slick. Plus the creators of the app are ready willing and able to offer support and assistance. I've been running this group for 30+ years and have used any number of technologies to try to make things work better and this app is the best by far! Check it out!
