What’s the best way to lose weight? Should you reduce the total number of calories in your diet or lower the total glycemic load? There is scientific evidence to support both approaches, so which one should you follow? Well, it turns out that both are important!

Everyone knows that calories are important, but not everyone knows that when you eat those calories you can do three things with them: burn them for energy; store them as fat; or use them to build lean body mass.

What you do with those calories is determined by hormones in your body, the most important being insulin. Your insulin level is determined not only by the number of calories you eat, but also by the type of calories you eat.

The “glycal” is calculated from a formula developed by Dr. Jeffrey S. Dunham, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., medical director of BioFit Medical Group and graduate of Harvard Medical School, and is based on the latest medical research.

The total number of glycals in a meal equals the total number of calories in a meal that will be stored as fat.

The Low-Glycal Diet™ app by BioFit contains over 1000 easy-to-find foods which are color coded as green (low-glycal), yellow (medium-glycal), or red (high-glycal) if eaten alone.

You assemble a meal by choosing the individual foods in that meal. The app then calculates the total number of glycals in that meal and gives you a green, yellow or red result.

The number of glycals will change depending on how you pair foods together. For example, eating two fried eggs (a green food) with two slices of cheddar cheese (a green food) will give you a green meal, but eating two fried eggs with two slices of dry whole wheat toast (a green food) will give you a red meal.

The ranges of green, yellow and red also change depending on when you have the meal, since eating carbohydrates after 6PM can be more fattening than eating them in earlier in the day.

Good, but wish there were more foods
This app has the potential to be great. I've used other apps before that require you to keep a food diary, so to speak, and this is the one that had the fewest amount of foods in the database. There is not even an option to add a food and enter the nutrition information - this would be another great option. To get there most out of it, I recommend that you purchase the book and then the pro version of the app. It helps to understand the science behind it in order to be successful. I want to love this app, but it needs to have the capability to add custom foods based on nutrition facts in order for me to give it five stars. There are just too many food options missing in the app.

Great tool!
A few weeks ago I went to a nutritionist to help me lose weight and get as healthy as I can. I learned that sugar is the root of all evil in your body. It creates inflammation, and inflammation leads to cancer, heart disease, joint pain and many other problems.

The nutritionist put me on a diet free from sugar and processed foods and free from high glycemic foods. I do not feel hungry most of the time, my joint pain is significantly reduced, I am losing weight and I feel great. I think this is the answer for me!

Finding this app has been very useful for me. I have learned some things that I didn't know and I'm very grateful for this information to be put out there in such clear and simple terms.

I learned that eating the same meal earlier in the evening is much healthier than eating it later in the evening. We have all heard that, but understanding the science behind it makes it all that much more significant in the choices I make.

This is a great app. Thank you! I also bought the book. It's very educational! This is the real science behind how the body stores and releases fat. Knowledge is power. Thank you!

Needs ability to manually add food items
The app is great, but it’s not really a solution without the ability to manually add items. If I know the calories and GL for a food, I can calculate glycals on my own- but then I can’t enter the meal into the tracker. If I could enter glycals myself- or even better, enter calories and GL and have the app calculate it for me- this app would be an all in one solution for following the diet. As it is, I’m having to keep a notebook, and the “pro” features that I paid for are t much use to me.

Works as expected.
As you can see from other reviews some folks have problems with this app. I bought the pro version and it has functioned fine on my 6+. I do agree the food list is somewhat limited and there seems to be a bug in seeing your weight data over a long period of time.

But the key thing is the app works with the book and so far I am very please with the results! The book without the app would not be as effective; together they are great!

I’m hopping for more food index they can add to the food list .
It’s a very nice app . Only I gave 4 stars is because I wish they had more food list options. Most of the time I don’t know the glycemic index of that certain fruit or food. I hope they can add more food to the list, so we can count the index correctly .

WARNING: Selling Your Personal Data
This app data-mines all your personal data and sells it to 3rd parties so everyone in the world they sell it to can spam you and know all your personal data. They keep it for 5 YEARS while profiting from stealing all your private data and selling it to anyone..!!! (I read all this in their "Privacy Policy.") The app will not function properly UNLESS you give them all your personal data according to their Privacy Policy. Also, it states that if you don't want them to sell your personal data, just uninstall their app. It does not state whether you can get your money back that you paid for the app if you uninstall it.

App not ready for prime time yet
This app needs considerable work. Especially, for the $3.99 price. It's not even beta ready. It frequently freezes; sums the glycal values over multiple days (there is no way two eggs and bacon have a 152 glycemic value!), and the food list is not extensive enough...you still have to estimate substitute items cause you can add items to the list. If I could find a way to get my money back, I would. But, for others, save you $. If you want to try this diet it's cheaper and easier to use paper and pencil...

Needs more improvement
The customer service does not respond to any questions i have. A lot of foods are not on the list. They are saying that if we cannot find the food we are looking for to ask them or reach them but no one answers. Bad customer service. They need to add more food choices or if not they better answer the questions the customer have. Waste of money of they continue to be like that.

Pro fail! Want my $ back!
Jan 2017 update: still crashes and still no response from the people for my refund request.

I paid for the Pro upgrade and it does nothing but crash when I try to use the Pro features. I contacted them several times and there is no response. No sense of customer service and just stealing people's $ with false promises.

I'm happy to update my review if someone would contact me and either fix the problems or give me a refund.

Primary crashes:
* when you try to favorite a meal so that you can auto-enter it in the future -the whole app crashes!
* when you try to change the date/time of a meal (i.e. Record a meal from the past) -crashes
