Description

"Head and shoulders above the crowd is The Photographer’s Ephemeris. Odd name, great app." - National Geographic

"One of the most useful apps for any nature photographer" - Outdoor Photographer Magazine

"It worked perfectly. The program was dead on…" - National Geographic

"One of the most powerful photography applications that I've seen, one that you'll be using for years and years." - AdoramaTV

The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) helps plan outdoor photography shoots in natural light, particularly landscape and urban scenes. It's a map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.

Whether you need at-a-glance information on today's sun, moon and Milky Way data for your current location, or need to plan a precise alignment of the full moon for a future shoot, TPE has the tools you need. The combination of augmented reality, line-of-sight analysis and visual search supports the most sophisticated photo planning needs.

Night mode features a 3D representation of the Milky Way, pole stars and major constellations directly over the map, so you can easily visualize exactly how to align your shot.

Research and save your own list of favorite photographic locations, using 7 different map types (including 2 offline maps) and save them in your locations list. Favorite locations are always displayed right on the map.

Advanced features including visual sun and moon search, automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon, ensuring that you have the best possible information for planning your shoot.

You can even determine when the sun or moon will rise from behind nearby hills and mountains.

Key features:

- Time/direction of sun, moon, and galactic center rise/set
- View azimuth and altitude of sun/moon and the galactic center for any time of day/night
- Milky Way, stars and asterisms visualization via 3D map overlay
- Moon phase and % illumination
- Civil, nautical and astronomical twilight
- 2 topographic maps
- 2 offline map types
- Movable map pins: drag and drop the pin exactly where you need it
- Map autorotation using the compass (on compatible devices)
- Shadow lengths displayed to scale on map
- Save any location you want: no fixed lists
- Celestial events including moon phases, apogee, perigee, solstice, equinox
- Upcoming solar eclipses for 2023 and 2024
- Network connection not required for rise/set time, azimuths and sun/moon position

Advanced features:

- Augmented reality view for on location scouting
- Saved location synchronization between devices and the free TPE web app
- Automatic time zone detection
- Elevation above sea level
- Distance, bearing and elevation angle between any two points
- Location import/export from KML
- Magnetic north option
- Configurable timeline display

Available map types include:

- Standard, Satellite/Hybrid, Terrain
- OpenCycleMap Topographic
- OpenStreetMap

Sunrise/sunset color forecasts are available (covering lower 48, southern Canada and Europe) with a subscription to the Skyfire service, available via in-app purchase.

Note:

- Maps and elevation-based calculations require a data connection, except for offline map tiles previously downloaded and stored on your device
- Topographic map data is available only between 60°N and 47°S
- Availability of map types is subject to change, due to 3rd party map service availability, terms or conditions

Version history

4.12

New:
- Solar eclipse paths included for Oct 14 2023 and Apr 8 2024 eclipses (on either Apple or Google Maps)
- Solar eclipse timeline graphic updates
- Tap solar eclipse graphic in the timeline to view full eclipse simulator (requires internet connection)

Updated:
- Google maps azimuth lines shown as geodesic
- Elevation service uses SRTM3 instead of SRTM1 (too many gaps in SRTM1 data)
- Updates for iOS 17
- Libraries and crash reporting
- Help content

To view one of the solar eclipse paths, set the date in the app to either Oct 14 2023 or Apr 8 2024. Drop the map pin within the central path (pink lines) or partial eclipse visibility area (purple lines). Adjust the time of day - the eclipse graphic will appear on the right of the Sun + Moon altitude chart when the eclipse is in progress. You can tap the eclipse graphic to view the full simulator, where you can play back the eclipse at a variety of speeds or select key moments in the eclipse using the provided controls, and check timings and durations of the various phases.

2021-10-07
- Updates for iOS 15
- Uses the new Skyfire v3 Platform for North America forecasts (details below)
- Changed the default style of offline topographic map from OpenCycleMap to Thunderforest Outdoors (better peak name display)
- Link to new service status page in Help
- UI fixes and refinements
- Updated SDKs and libraries

This version uses Skyfire v3 for North America forecasts. The v3 platform has been built from the ground up to run on a new cloud architecture. One of the primary benefits of the new platform is that multiple forecasts can be generated in parallel. This has allowed us to increase the update frequency significantly. The current schedule for North America forecast updates on the new platform is:

Today: hourly refresh
Today +1: sunrise - hourly, sunset - every 2 hours
Today +2: sunrise - every 2 hours, sunset - every 4 hours
Today +3: every 6 hours
Today +4: every 8 hours

Generally, you will see the updated forecast become available at twenty past the hour. Schedules start from midnight UTC, hence, so, for example, 4-hourly updates will be available at 00:20, 04:20, 08:20 etc. We expect to move EU forecasts to the v3 platform also in the coming weeks.
4.9.1
2020-02-06
4.9.1
- New: search web service is included in the services status page
- Bug fixes

4.9
- New: support for what3words
- New: updated Locations page
- Updated: the World Magnetic Model has been updated to 2020-2025
- Improved: even better coordinate parsing - TPE supports a wide variety of formats conveniently in a single field
- Bug fixes and stability improvements

What3words: we're delighted to add support for what3words. what3words provides a unique three word address for any location on earth. Find out more at what3words.com.

We've refreshed the Locations page to make it simpler to navigate. Saved locations now have their own dedicated page - you can filter your locations by name and favorites, as before.

Search is broken out into two new screens. Type address or place name into the Address/Place search field and TPE will suggest matches as you type. You can enter a three word address too!

When you open the Coordinates Search page, TPE automatically shows the red map pin position (or grey if geodetics is enabled). You can type or paste in any latitude/longitude coordinate into the field and we'll convert it to a usable location you can save. We automatically display nearby places and the corresponding three word address. You can add these directly to your saved locations list, or use them to set the map pins.

Please send your feedback and suggestions to [email protected] - we'd love to hear from you.

- Bug fix for occasional crash with offline map types (Open Street Map, Open Cycle Map), particularly affecting iOS 13.3
- Updated SDKs

Please send your feedback and suggestions to [email protected] - we'd love to hear from you. If you're enjoying TPE, a review on the App Store is really helpful, and lets us keep improving the app.
4.8
2019-10-30
- Improved: paste latitude/longitude coordinates directly into the search field
- Improved: new browser page for User Guide and Help Center content (print directly from the page, or export a PDF)
- Improved: user guide and about pages load faster
- Improved: video tutorial landing page
- Fixed: stored map tiles occasionally unavailable for some users when offline

Instead of adding a location and then manually editing the coordinates, you can now paste a lat/lon directly into the search field on the locations page. Multiple formats are supported including decimal degrees (e.g. 46.2234, 6.1467), degrees/minutes/seconds (e.g. 46° 13' 24.24", 6° 8' 48.12"), and degrees plus decimal minutes (e.g. N46° 13.404', E6° 8.802').

4.7
2019-09-28
- New: updated for iOS 13 and Dark Mode
- New: Skyfire map tiles are now served via a CDN for faster loading
- New: offline time zone detection
- New: app prompts at startup to reset date to today, if necessary (controllable in settings)
- Improved: better performance in AR 3D rendering
- Improved: Skyfire now displays at higher zoom levels when using Apple Maps
- Fix: real-time tracking was not cancelled on selecting an event or changing date on iPad
- Fix: rare crash while using Visual Search
- Updated SDKs

Dark mode: dark map styles are displayed for both Apple and Google maps when the "normal" default map type is selected (other maps types do not change appearance). Other UI elements and screens are altered for Dark Mode when it is selected. Remember, TPE's Night Mode is not the same thing as iOS 13's Dark Mode. Night Mode displays information relevant to night photography. Dark Mode alters the user interface to display with dark styling.

4.6
2019-05-06
- New: azimuth/altitude gauges and numerical readout added to the AR view (useful for sighting the altitude to a landmark or ridge etc.)
- New: in AR view, stars can now be tapped to display name and Beyer designation
- New: last selected date/time is restored on restarting the app
- New: any manually selected override time zone is restored on restarting the app
- New: if an override time zone is specified, the time zone is displayed in bold at the top of the map
- Improved: formatting of displayed time zones has been improved. Previously historically "odd" time zones, e.g. Italy pre-1893, would display a cryptic series of digits
- Improved: override time zones can now be freely defined. They are no longer limited to present day time zone offsets; an arbitrary number of minutes offset can be specified, making it easier to manage historical "pre-time zone" offsets from GMT, when using TPE for historical research purposes
- Improved: larger font size for time, time zone, elevation, and coordinates at the top of the map
- Changed: the tap-to-toggle-map-to-full-screen feature has been removed; it was too easy to activate accidentally
- Fix: control tray height is fixed on iPhone Xs Max (was too short)
- Updated SDKs and libraries

4.2.1
2018-03-30
Some Augmented Reality (AR) enhancements:

- New: map pins now appear in the AR view. This is very handy when trying to relate a position on the map to one in the real world, or when your mountain peak is shrouded in clouds, but you still want to align a shot using AR. The map pins are lit by the simulated sun and moon. They are visible within a 30mile/50km radius of your device. They are scaled up with distance to remain visible on the screen. Pins are only displayed if elevation is known.
- New: on turning live time tracking off, the previous date/time is now restored (so you can toggle time tracking on/off easily to recalibrate to the sun/moon whenever needed without losing your place)
- New : magnetic field out-of-tolerance graphic now moves to side of screen if the condition is persistent (so it's not always in the way)
- Fix: AR layout in landscape on iPhone X has been tidied up
- Fix: AR screen chart respects 12/24 clock setting correctly

Miscellaneous:
- Fixed: rise/set azimuth lines were not hidden during midnight sun (regression bug)
- Fixed: Location notes were not included in KML export
- Fixed: track heading sometimes resets unexpectedly when using Apple Maps
- New style for Google Maps
- Updated SDKs

HSchmauch,
For City/Landscape Photographs
It is great to show you the elevation and “Flow” of the land. Also it has 4 types of maps showing this in Google & 2 using Apple maps. You can see what you are getting into, but you must remember the this is just a map form yesterday, new trails or changes are not shown. Also the view is of the elevation is great as long as they haven’t built anything or grasses/trees grown too much, which is not true for Charlotte,NC. All this being said, I related the program a 5 Star because it shows you so many points of view, the sun & moon flow in the sky at a specific time and a better location to at least start looking for a good spot to get the frame you want. This program is great for starting a plan from your house and then going out for the picture.
JJ Everett,
Years of use and service
I think I have been using this app for more than 5 years. I have gotten so many great moon rises both morning and night. It is so helpful for planning shoots. A portrait with the sun or moon in the distance is memorable. It has gotten a little busy over the years with all the features but well worth the extra strain on my aging eyes. The developer loves this app and they put their heart and sole into it trying to make it the best it can be. (App Request: Dummy mode: only display what can be used in the 3 hours.)
Worth every penny and will last you several camera bodies. This is one of the first apps I recommend to my photo friends and install on my new apple devices. Enjoy.
Sue D Nimh,
Nothing else like it!
Extremely useful app, if you want to plan your photography for a trip or event. Pick your location-instantly you see sun and moon rise and set times. Tap on the date to pick a future date. Swipe a finger across the display at the bottom to see the direction of sun or moon overlaid on the map-satellite photo help plan the shot, and even tells you if terrain will obstruct your view of eg sunset. I have used it to choose location for a one time trip to the Mackinaw Bridge, as well as look to see where is the closest place to travel for the next solar eclipse.

If you care about getting the most good locations for your photo trip, hands down this is the one to get!
Unabirder,
Extremely useful.
I’ve been using this app for about a year or more and it has proven very useful. I have several locations saved near home and a National Park where I go to to observe and photograph sun and moon rises and sets. Particularly, I try to photograph moon rises or sets within the Earth’s Shadow. This app provides the times and locations where this will happen. What it cannot do is control the weather, so ultimately it is still a challenge, but using this app ensures that you have all the information at hand to be in the right place at the right time.
Hitecdan,
Daily checker
I use this app everyday to check conditions. The apps has a learning curve but once you start using it it becomes second nature. Excellent for planning photo trips and locations. I really like the night time/Milky Way mode and the optional Skyfire feature. Highly recommend this app if your into landscape photography. Only issues I’ve had is the clunky sign in process for Skyfire. Usually have to turn the WiFi off on my iPhone in order to sign in.

Very hard to use
I’ve had this app for years and it can be helpful but it’s also too hard to use most the time and I don’t think I’m going to renew my yearly subscription again
My issue is that the main thing I like to use it for is favoriting a location and then having sky fire notify me when the conditions are good. Haven’t used the app on a while and I can no longer figure out to do something as simple as add a location as a favorite. Went online and tried to find help and can’t find anything. Why can’t you just favorite a location as you search for it?
The app could be better if they just made it more intuitive

Cannot Save New Locations in the Mobile App
I have looked everywhere, but it appears that the only place to save a location that you personally designate is while you are in the Web Site. And, to add insult to injury, you cannot use the desktop version on a mobile device. This is very inconvenient considering I always have my mobile devices when traveling rather than my desktop computer. Additionally, the Skyfire add-on is rarely correct. I understand that weather changes, but when the accuracy is less than 50% that is an issue.

Beautifully Done
I just wish the morons at microsoft and lately Apple could design and write software half this well. Very well thought out, beautifully conceived, written and extremely useful. These three apps (or any one of them for that matter) take your photography to an entirely new level. They work together perfectly. Very complimentary with PhotoPills (you definitely want these three apps even if you already have it). What a pleasure ...

Excellent tool for photographers!
Very useful for planning your photography when you want to create the perfect shot whether it is sunsets, moon rises, Milky Way, or trying to determine visibility between arbitrary points on a map.

One feature that I find differentiates this from other similar apps is that it shows the height of the terrain between two different points while taking into account the ENTIRE path between the two points. Other apps simply would disregard the fact that a mountain may be in between you and the far end obstructing your line of sight.

To get the most from the tool, watch the videos posted on Vimeo on usage. Once I watched those, I had a much better understanding of how to use the tool effectively.

Great stuff!!

Still a beginner but learning a lot about this app
This app is unbelievably sophisticated. My main use is for sky fire. But I have used the tool that allows me to plan a shot by using street view and the type of camera and lens. I just got a new lens for night sky photography. I have zero knowledge of the night sky so this will hopefully help. I am planning on watching some of their help videos to get the full benefit of this app.
