Description

Theodolite HD is a multi-function viewfinder that combines a compass, two-axis inclinometer, rangefinder, GPS, map, nav calculator, and geo-overlay photo/movie camera into one indispensable app. Theodolite was one of the very first augmented reality (AR) apps when it was released in 2009, and it’s been downloaded and used by millions of customers since then. Uses are endless, and the app is great for land measurements, outdoor sports, sightseeing, navigation, and finding your way around. Theodolite is a pro grade app and is used extensively by surveyors, geologists, architects, engineers, competitive sportsmen, first responders, military personnel, and search and rescue workers around the world.

Theodolite lets you take data-overlay photos and movies with 2X-8X zoom. Overlay geographical data, angle markings, date/time, author/company info, and project notes directly on photos and movies for later reference. The same data is written into the metadata record of images, making image files self-contained data records. Third-party apps can tap into Theodolite's advanced camera functions with a camera sharing feature.

View current position on the built-in map with optional offline Outdoors maps that include topo contours, roads, trails, landmarks, campgrounds, ski lifts, and more. Live map markers continually update distance/heading relative to the current location and also show wayfinding info in the main viewfinder. Draw polygons on the map to mark things like property boundaries and trails, and import/export polygon data via KML.

Share map markers and nav calculator points with other users of Theodolite via text messages or e-mail. This powerful capability opens up a wide range of collaborative uses including team land surveying, accident investigations, spotting wild fires, triangulation of landmarks, and advanced tactical observation and targeting. With an optional in-app purchase to enable team tracking, you can share location with up to 20 people on Theodolite's map.

Theodolite includes features for serious users like a reference angle mode, nav calculator, map marker import/export, manual and automatic data logging with CSV and KML export, clipboard integration, %grade display, mil compass readout, optical rangefinders (including a mil-based reticle, sniper-style stadiametric graphs, and a variable 4X-24X scope), and night filters to improve use in dark conditions.

Theodolite can provide location in military grid reference system (MGRS) coordinates, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates, British/Irish National Grids, US National Grid, Maidenhead locator system, Map Grid of Australia, and six latitude/longitude formats. Optional US State Plane coordinates include SPCS27 and SPCS83 zones covering all US States. The optional Datum Pack adds over 230 geodetic datums to the app to improve position computation from GPS data, covering regions and countries on all continents around the world.

AR Layers include navigational aids like the sun, moon, planets, and Polaris (North star), and the optional US Mountain Summits layer that shows over 70,000 US mountain summits in the viewfinder.

Theodolite has been shown in Apple Keynotes, featured on the App Store, and has been a #1 selling Navigation app in App Stores around the world. Since its introduction in 2009, Theodolite has defined augmented reality navigation. The app continually introduces new technologies, pushing the limits of iOS app development and taking advantage of new hardware capabilities.

Find out why Apple named Theodolite one of the most amazing apps available and showed it being used to explore the Great Wall of China. Where will you take it on your next adventure?

Note: Theodolite HD is an iPad app -- see the regular “Theodolite” app for use on an iPhone or iPod Touch. And be sure to check out the all-new "Theodolite for Watch" and put Theodolite on your wrist!

Version history

9.0.2

Theodolite HD 9.0.2 adds options for two compass sensor algorithms in PREFS > Advanced. "More Robust" (default) is a new option intended for general use in a variety of environments, including locations with moderate electromagnetic interference. It was implemented in response to more and more customers attempting to use the compass in marginal situations. "More Sensitive" (previous default) uses 3D vector components of magnetic field to give higher fidelity measurements, but should only be used in clean electromagnetic environments. With either option, be mindful of local compass sensor accuracy, shown by tapping any of the green/red dots on the viewfinder screen.

Theodolite HD 9.0-9.0.1 added: New options for viewfinder graphics colors. Option to show planets in AR overlay. Ability to use sunrise/sunset/horizon to control display of AR layer content. Added help tips to status screen for common compass issues. Added links to iOS Settings for common privacy/permission issues. Added support for dual-wide cameras. New AR display of map markers in main viewfinder. Option for export of files to local iPhone or iCloud (log, map markers, map polygons).

Theodolite HD 7 lays the groundwork for the next several years of development. The app introduces it's first AR layers, including navigational aids like the sun, moon, and Polaris (North star), and adds a brand new in-app purchase that shows over 70,000 US mountain summits in the viewfinder. These AR layers support Theodolite's new compass correction mode, which lets you slide your finger on the screen to correct compass errors and offsets by aligning the compass with known references. Theodolite HD 7 brings improvements to night modes, makes it easier to find and buy in-app purchases, and has numerous user interface improvements and tweaks throughout the app. Support for all the latest iOS devices has been added.
6.1.2
2018-10-03
Bug fix for crash when opening URLs for team invites, data sharing, and camera sharing.
6.1.1
2018-08-27
Added an option for sequential naming/numbering of photo files in Preferences > Camera Options. Filenames will be of the format "THnnnnnn.JPG" where nnnnnn is an internal Theodolite photo sequence number. This will avoid the issue PC users were seeing with random alphanumeric filenames when importing photos, and let Mac users choose a sequential file name format if they prefer. This is now the default option, but users can change back to the more descriptive prefix/timestamp naming of files introduced with Theodolite 6.1. See the user manual for more info on photo file naming.

The map will now center and zoom on an imported polygon, and polygons now show a marker on the first point to aid visibility when zoomed out.

Added ability to import map marker and polygon KML files from the app's local documents folder (accessible from the iOS 11 Files app or iTunes on a Mac/PC). This will provide an import path for people who don't use iCloud Drive.

ATTENTION IOS 8 USERS: When Theodolite HD launches in iOS 8 for the first time, iOS puts up a dialog asking you to give the app permission to access the camera. Many people are mistakenly clicking "no", which causes Theodolite HD to display a black camera view or simply not launch. If you have denied permission to access the camera, you can override this in System Settings > Privacy > Photo. This permission dialog is from iOS, not Theodolite HD, so please direct further feedback about this to Apple.

* Fully compatible with iOS 8 and new iPad Air/mini models
* Redesigned user interface for iOS 7/8.
* Fix for quitting issues on iOS 7/8 if user denies permission to access the microphone with the app's movie mode enabled.
* Theodolite HD will now disable movie recording if user denies permission to access the microphone.
* Theodolite HD will now disable photo capture and movie recording if the user denies permission to access the photo album.

Check your privacy options in System Settings > Privacy to override these behaviors (this is part of iOS, not Theodolite HD).

2013-02-16
ATTENTION iOS 7 USERS: if the app quits on launch, it is because you did not allow access to the microphone. You can override this in system settings > privacy > microphone. For more information, see the app's user manual FAQ section or e-mail the developer. Please do not leave tech support requests in iTunes reviews, as we have no way to respond to you.

accuracy fan,
Genealogy Tool
We use Theodolite to take pictures of cemetery headstones and other family history sites to augment our family history information. The imprinted information helps others locate historical site more accurately rather than from notes like near the big tree, near a gate, along the third driveway, etc. Since most cellphones have GPS capabilities, a Theodolite picture can help someone find a relevant place more easily.

Also, as the chairman of a small cemetery, I take a picture of each headstone and place that picture in the plot file. Now I can respond to an inquiry with a photo that has the location information.

Thank you to the folks who make Theodolite, what a great tool.
Light&Sound,
Great App, but offline maps are very expensive
I've always liked this app for site survey of local obscura and the like.
Since they added the offline map function I thought it would be a great hiking add (like a GPS). I like using my iPad as a GPS even though I know its big. the large screen is really nice for looking at the local terrain.
The capability to download offline maps is very attractive so I bought 100,000 tile credits for $15 to download maps for hiking. I defined the area of one local park/hiking are to download and found that 100,000 tiles was not enough! I did a test and found I need about 10 tiles just to cover an area the size of my house and yard.
A fine app but does not make dollars and sense for the average hiker. For $100 I can buy detailed maps for my GPS that cover NM, AZ, UT, and CO. At Theodolite prices, $100 would buy offline maps for about 1 county

One Amazing piece of kit!
I bought this my Nav App back when it was iPhone 4 and it’s always one of the first apps I download now. If you’ve ever wanted to get your bearings, this is THE go to app. Easy to use, and packed with features ensure you won’t get lost, or can pinpoint that particular spot repeatedly. Take multiple readings to find that specific point in 3D space.

I dream that one day this interface will be overlaid with the interface for FILMic Pro to make an advanced professional camera for Cinema shooting.

I have had this app for several years and they keep upgrading it and making it even better. We have used it many times. Example making gold mine boundaries, or finding property lines, or getting info for earth excavation, or seeing if something is horizontal. It has proved very accurate and well worth keeping on the pad/phone. I can not say enough about my joy using this app. Makes many jibes very easy.
BFHunter,
Suggestion
Love the app. Use it for photography scouting on iPad. Please update and include user definable film frame that can simulate various lens focal lengths and chip or film sizes. Right now it is just wide angle and it would be so much more helpful for simulations. The pictures could be used for story boarding feature films as well. Right now I want to simulate a location shoot for a year away of a total eclipse of the sun that includes a unique landscape as the foreground.
RMS77777,
Pretty good for what it is
I'm not I. The habit of writing reviews , in fact I think this is my second one . The app is pretty good for what it is , however I have one underlying complaint the in app purchases chiefly buying tiles . The state plane coordinates I can understand, the amount of tiles necessary to do even the simplest task is
Too outrageous. Cmon guys . Really .
Yes I understand it takes time and money to produce a worthwhile app but you could up the amount of tiles needed to cover a decent survey grid .then I would give you 5 stars .
HD download for all,
Great app
There are too few apps that live up to the quality of this one. To the developers, thank you. I hope you can keep pace with all the iOS updates. Thank you all!

Keep the fine work up. Should you choose to expand into some elaborate audio recording that joins the video recording it could greatly expand the abilities and usefulness of the excellent application.
Ishmael16,
Theodolite - Outstanding App
Been using this at sea for the past several years and am always impressed. Can be used for celestial navigation finding gyro error. Debating whether or not to request a speed readout or not, but that may cause too much clutter on the display and not needed for terrestrial navigation or surveying. All in all a great app.
EMoeller,
Excellent !
I'm a geologist and I've been using this on both my iPhone and iPad since it first came out. It's excellent! I use it in the field all of the time to document projects as well as perform basic surveying. The updates are timely and the speed to take the screenshots is great.

Oh and I also use this when I go hiking and camping.
Gracci Brother,
Theodolite Review
I’m an attorney. It’s a magnificent site to take pictures with absolute proof of where, when and all possible specifics of the shot. If I have one tiny issue, it’s that occasionally the camera is upside down and won’t flip. It may be the iPad’s fault and not Theodolite’s; but I can live with that.
