Description

TimeTree 4 is a public knowledge-base for information on the evolutionary timescale of life. This application allows easy exploration of the thousands of divergence times among organisms in the scientific literature. A tree-based (hierarchical) system is used to identify all published molecular time estimates bearing on the divergence of two chosen organisms, such as species, compute summary statistics, and present the results. Names of two taxa to be compared are entered in the search window and the results are presented on a set of self-explanatory tabs.

TimeTree 4 contains data from 2,274 studies including 50,632 species. We will be adding more data in the future as it comes in from researchers.

TimeTree 4 requires iOS 8.0 or newer.

The TimeTree project is jointly directed by Blair Hedges (Center for Biodiversity, Temple University) and Sudhir Kumar (Institute for Genomics and Evolutionary Medicine, Temple University). This project has been supported, in part, by grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, NASA Astrobiology Institute, and Science Foundation of Arizona.

Sesira Hoatzin,
Great educational tool
While the app is somewhat prone to crashing on occasion, it’s a great educational tool for showing how close or distant two organism’s common ancestor is. Despite not being a teacher or officially a biology major myself (yet), I’ve been able to use this app to teach friends about relations between organisms.
Mark the Wonderer,
Great tool to have on smart phone
I appreciate this evidence-based app for helping me to understand the time of divergence of two taxa. For instance, I just found out today that anteaters and aardvarks likely split evolutionarily about 100 million years ago! Not everyone wonders about this, but for those who do, this app is a great reference.
Colin Rafferty,
Needs update for iPhone X
It’s great, but would be nice if the layout worked for “new” phones.
HJKarten,
Of practical value to understand evolutionary relationships
Excellent source of information regarding taxonomic relationships and last-common ancestor (LCA). Useful for preparing lectures when I want to check on age of various species of birds, dinosaurs, etc. The online linkages to taxonomics at NCBI is very helpful.
Fun to check on LCA of different birds when out in the field, though some of the ages of LCA seemed surprising to me.
I hope that they will also provide a version that is designed for display on iPad2.
Would be helpful if they also listed the organism they suggest as the LCA.
Price is unbeatable (free!).
Harvey
waywatcher,
Crashes instantly
This app used to be great! I used it on an old iPad 2. I just attempted to use it on the iPad Pro 9" and it cannot even open: just crashes instantly. Please fix it so I can use it with teaching my life science classes...
Carl91four,
Why can’t I check on the diff between...
Why can’t I check on the diff between ‘dogs and cats’, or humans and chimpanzees’?
Dawit123,
cool app!!
using this app has been helpful.
Phil#4,
Way cool science app
I just downloaded the app and played with it for a while. This will be fun when I get into chats with creationists or just want to add to my trivia collection.

Just a note. If you are looking for a date between humans and gorillas or chimpanzees , use homo sapiens rather than human. I couldn't get a result with human/gorilla or human/chimpazee.

Have fun.
Typical Joe,
Authored by an anthropology student or true paleontologist?
Eg, search for the common ancestor date of a fox and a wolf inevitably gives the error "can not compare a taxa with its parent". Same for tiger and lion, etc. Therefore, it will only answer ridiculously obvious differences in animal and plant species. Nice app concept, but needs much more capability to answer anything but the most elementary query. Appears almost as if it was designed with more of a social (political?) agenda in mind than scientific education.
Rajjj...,
Awesome work!!!!
I tried some of the queries people stated had issues but they worked for me. For example you can look up when a tiger and lion split off in history. This is all around a fun app to play with.
Great work!!!
