Mat Pankratz,
Was great, then 4.0.0 Came out
Absolutely hate this update. It’s impossible to zoom in without changing the angle you’re viewing at (why would anyone want to view the map at an angle anyway??) and it always rotates so north isn’t at the top when you don’t want it to. Worst of all, the stream gauges are all gone. They still show in the legend, but you can’t actually use them on the map, and especially this time of year that’s a major feature!

Update: I should say that I figured out how to get the gauges back again, so that’s good at least, still a wonderful app but man, it’s way more difficult to use now.
tywalkerdev,
Not a complete waste, but not worth the price.
I used TroutRoutes premium as a primary way to plan my last fly-fishing trip. Here are some of the pros and cons.

Pros:
- a good starting place to highlight campgrounds, hikes, streams, creeks, and rivers
- good information on water levels if a dam is further up river
- multiple layer maps to help you determine the difficulty of accessing a point in the river

Now the bad:
- inaccurate stream info. At one point the River I was fishing— Watauga in western North Carolina— went way farther than the map suggested. Further up there was a public park that you could access the river that locals said was amazing to fish— wasn’t even included on the app. This leads me to…
- The parking suggestions are a joke. You CANNOT rely on this information. I probably wasted 2-3 hours PER DAY driving to a “parking spot” that had signs everywhere saying you couldn’t park there.
- inaccurate class information. Different classes were given than my state wildlife gave
- contains little information, tips, suggestions, or locations that quick google search couldn’t give you.

Ultimately, you’re better off using the free version to start your trip, but only if you’d like to find smaller, less popular streams— double edged sword may be that they are unpopular for a reason. Even popular rivers contain missing or inaccurate information on an area.

Save your money and buy a few flies at a local fly shop. Get tips and info from them.
Oldgraymidge,
Helps Guide Me to Public Water
I have only been using it for about a month but have found it quite useful in excluding trips to small creeks with limited or no public access. On the other hand, it has drawn my attention to a few blue line creeks that had heretofore slipped under my radar. The ability to put private notes at a certain location (such as what worked under what conditions) or drawing lines on maps to mark routes and trails more boldly is a great tool for later trips. A lot of thought has gone into how to make this useful for fisherfolk. Kudos to the creators.
JimFan123456,
It used to work great...
I was introduced to this app at a Fly Fishing Expo about a year and a half ago. I’ve introduced others too it as well. It was one of my favorite apps. Unfortunately, with one of the last updates something changed and I can’t open it on either of my two iPhones (6S and an iPhone 8) operating on the most updated operating systems. I would definitely subscribe to it, but now I can’t even open it.

Hopefully, this is something the developers figure out soon. Hopefully, I can start using this new version, someday.
jefe93,
Great Support
I made an error in setting up my account and testing the free trial of the Trout Routes service, but after a call to their support number, I received an extremely prompt call back from Zac who was very kind and understanding and helped me resolve my issue right away. We had a great chat on the phone, and I could tell immediately how passionate he was about this project. I’m excited to see this app/service develop moving forward. Support like that in the startup world is hard to come by.
Bullet666,
Wanted to love it but nowhere near complete for WV
So the functionality and features are great. However I am in WV and it is inaccurate and some streams are missing which is honestly ridiculous considering the WVDNR has their own public mapping of the streams and stocking zones. If you’re going to charge a premium for an app at least make sure all the free information at your fingertips is on there and accurate. I don’t mind paying for it at all but it has to be accurate to what the WVDNR has or it is useless since this is what is used in WV. By all means have the full stream on there but the WVDNR stocking should be on there and all the stocked streams should be there.
Icanfish,
What a joke!
Any creek that might be a creek is listed. You want to drive to a seasonal dry creek? This is your app. Want to have a viable small trout gem next to irrigation ditches, this is your app. Want to query a class 1 on your area…nope you see all the noise. It’s a Topo with notes and sketchy evaluations. I know my area…this app plain doesn’t. Grab the free version for a Topo, but don’t count on it to put you on great fishing. You may end up trying to euro nymph dirt.

Deleted the app: my observations were regarding Washington state. Way too many rivers that were a “2” but normally dry and only flow as rain drainage was immense. 1/10 rivers felt correctly rated. The GIS info is publicly available so the rating system needs to be accurate to establish value. It is severely broken and thus the app is useless.
Phil_d_l,
Needs work
I downloaded this to teat it out. For my state, it’s missing a LOT of information. The class system doesn't match our state classification and some waters that are higher class were listed as lower class in the app. What’s bizarre is that our state has all of this data available for free in GIS format and even has a free website with better info than what’s in the app. The developers should have been able to easily pull all the GIS biomass data from the state and include it. There was a ton of public access missing. This looks like someone just pulled a bunch of data from somewhere and tried to customize it without actually knowing anything about the areas.
Bob Clear,
Can’t use without paying
I was so excited about using this app, I signed up and everything… Almost ready to dive in only to hit a pay wall and cannot use the app without paying the fee (one day it was $40 for the year and today it was $60? Don’t know what the deal with that is). What’s the point in having different memberships but the only way to access the app is to pay a subscription? Again I was extremely excited about this only to lead to disappointment. Am I making a mistake somewhere in the process? Can I get the membership off my screen to see if I even enjoy the app before offloading my cc info? This is the first time I have ever written a review on anything so I hope I can find some help.
Thanks!
TimGuy_OG,
Good app, but why pay premium for public data?
It’s well put together, but this is ripping off the state data. I understand the overhead required to keep an app going like this, but it seems like the professional version is the same as the online Trout opportunities interactive mapper (WI DNR), which is free. I see why you should pay a premium for a platform, but you should not pay for public ally acquired data. Regardless of this, I still appreciate the app.
