Description

Tunefox is a web and app based learning tool designed to help people learn bluegrass songs and licks for guitar, mandolin, banjo and bass. Tunefox has revolutionary tools such as the skill slider. It allows one song to go from simple to complex with the swipe of a finger. We have a variety of styles to learn in each instrument. For mandolin and guitar there are stylized arrangements for Bluegrass, Fingerstyle, Crosspicking, Jazz, Classical and more. For banjo, we cover the three big styles of 3-finger picking (Scruggs, melodic and single-string). We also have tunes that range from classical to rock and roll. There’s a lot of variety to keep you interested and inspired. Every song has switchable licks that allow you to learn authentic bluegrass vocabulary, and get a new perspective on how to use them in a tune. Learning a wide variety of licks tremendously with building your vocabulary to use in improvisation.

Customization of a song is practically limitless. Once you get a basic arrangement of a tune under your fingers you can use the skill slider to add in a few of the notes to a basic arrangement. Like building a house, you slowly add a few bricks at a time after you’ve laid the foundation. With the vary slider, you can customize which fill-in notes are used around the basic arrangement you’ve learned. Then, to top all of that off, you can shuffle in a variety of licks, to incorporate different styles and techniques into your playing. It’s personalized to the max! Included within Tunefox are all of the normal practice tools - tempo slider, backing tracks, chords, and looping/measure selection as well as special tools like speed up, hide notes, and memory-train (these special tools are available on the web version).

Our goal is to help students become real musicians. We don’t want you to just learn an arrangement of a tune and then only be able to play that arrangement. There’s so much more to a solo and a lot of it has to do with hearing the bluegrass vocabulary and then learning how it fits into a song that you know.

Hello Tunefoxers,
we come to you today with some exciting news. Most of you know Tunefox has the tunes and tools to help you learn and improve on Banjo, Mandolin, Flatpicking Guitar, Clawhammer Banjo, and Bass. Now, we’ve just added a new style for you to check out and dig into: Fingerstyle Blues Guitar.

We’ve teamed up with the virtuosic Yuta Tanaka to launch this new offering. Yuta has toured internationally and his style is firmly rooted in the blues. He is also well versed in several others such as Jazz, Country, and more.

Yuta has created a large number of tunes that serve as great studies in Fingerstyle Blues, and has recorded videos that demonstrate these arrangements. You’ll learn common and traditional blues licks, moveable chord shapes, and so much more. Many of the arrangements follow standard chord progressions, while others are done in the style of legendary Blues tunes and artists.

We have also added a lot of tunes in the style of Fingerpicking greats such as Mississippi John Hurt, Etta Baker, and Elizabeth Cotten, and we’re only planning to add more. We’ll add tunes by fingerpicking greats such as Merle Travis, Blind Boy Fuller, Chet Atkins and others. We’d like to hear what you all would like to learn, so be sure and send in some requests!

It’s no secret that Blues music is a huge part of bluegrass, and in adding these Fingerstyle Blues guitar tunes we noticed how deep the connection between Blues and Bluegrass runs. Tunes like Freight Train, Shortnin Bread, Stagolee, You Are My Sunshine etc are standard in both styles. It provides a really nice perspective to hear it in a different style. You might get some new ideas and perspective to apply to your playing on guitar, banjo, or mandolin playing.

We hope all of you enjoy this and are as excited about it as we are. So please, dig in, have a ball, and let us know what you think!

Hi everyone, we just added a new feature that enables you to see Tunefox tab in a different way. The feature is called Light Mode. It takes you from the usual darker look of Tunefox, which is great for when practicing at smaller screens, to a lighter look. The Black background becomes white, and the tab lines are classic black. To turn on Light Mode navigate to the Settings -> App Settings -> Light Mode.

Tunefox is about to receive a serious upgrade! We have several new features rolling out.

The most revolutionary feature coming to Tunefox is the Skill Slider. With the swipe of a finger, one song arrangement can go from simple to complex. Slide to the left, and many of the “fill-in” notes will be removed. Swipe to the right, and all those extra notes will fill out the arrangement, revealing a full fledged fiddle tune, or Bluegrass number.

When discovering new tunes, and navigating this new interface, you might want some help. For that, we bring you the Tunefox Tutor. Tunefox Tutor will help guide your learning journey in the best ways. It will ask what your skill level is before starting a song. That will make sure the speed and difficulty fits your needs. Then, the Tunefox Tutor will check in with you after playing through a song. It will ask how you think you did. Based on your answer, it will modify the song arrangement by making it slightly easier, or adding more challenge. This really helps guide your practice very efficiently.

Another feature is the Level Gainer. It will slowly add more notes with each pass through a song. Start simple. On the next pass, a couple new notes will be added. Progressing in small steps will relieve a lot of struggle that comes when switching between a Beginner and Intermediate arrangement. Sometimes, that’s a big jump. The slider, and level gainer, allow us to take baby steps all the way to the top!

Last on our list of new features is Vary. It does just what it says, and gives us practically limitless variety to all the arrangements. Because the core arrangements leave many notes out, there’s lots of options on what notes get added in. The vary tool helps us to explore all those options. This keeps everything interesting, helps to unlock new ideas, and is always rooted around the core arrangement. It is an amazing tool to help you internalize a song, and explore the many different interpretations of it.

We are so excited about the new features and what they will do for everyone’s learning experience.

Srseaman,
It’s Key To How I Learn
I’ve been an early user of TuneFox and love the new app and the ease with which I can learn new songs, either solely by ear or with some of the tools (ease of isolating measures, hidden notes, ability to switch in different licks, Scruggs/melodic and backup playing styles). With TuneFox, I’ve stretched myself like never before, and it’s all self-paced. When i’ve got a tune I want to master, as happened this week at a jam session, TuneFox was my first stop. I love being able to isolate one, two three measures until I have them nailed and then move on. In the past, I’ve always started at the beginning of a song and as a result, i don’t get to the back of the song as much. That’s all changed and I am seeing progress I’ve never seen before! I’m now using it for mandolin and plan on using it to learn guitar.
RedBeard_,
Musical innovation!!
As someone who hasn’t played music in several years this app was a perfect way for me to hit the ground running with learning the banjo. After a month of working through the lessons I am feeling more confident in my ability to start playing with a group.
The support for this app is top notch. I have mad suggestion to them through email and Facebook and have had great response time and friendly service. They have even implemented one of my suggestions already.
There seems to be an active development staff and the Facebook group has been very helpful.
The value for the subscription is great when compared to lessons or other online instruction. If you’re thinking about learning a new instrument or just learning bluegrass TuneFox is amazing.
Flemdar108,
regarding recent updates
Hard to hear the metronome and the back music is a bit too loud and just tends to drown out what was once a decent metronome.

I have been contacted promptly by the CEO of Tunefox and they’ve been awesome about helping explain and correct my issues.

What I love about it is the ability to play along with the Tabs in both the Lessons, riffs and songs, it really helps to hear and play along. Since I am just starting out I loved too that I could click the link to the chord and find the shape WITHIN the song While Playing it! Great features, I also love the video lessons and the teacher does a Wonderful job on every single video explaining! I really can’t say enough good
Stalactite Formation,
Mostly Awesome
This a great and helpful app. The layout is fantastic, and the ability to switch song segments to pentatonic scales, chromatic, etc. is an unexpected boon. The Lessons are great, but regrettably limited, and don’t take you very far. There are a few things that could be added, for sure, such as expanding the song library to include more than folk/bluegrass music (though I understand that’s the primary genre for the target instruments, mandolin can easily transition to more classical melodies). It would also be nice to switch from numeric tablature to a standard d musical notation (staves and noteheads).

All things considered, if you’re learning your instrument for bluegrass or folk, this is the perfect app. And even if you’re not interested in that genre, the mechanics and techniques learned can generally carry over to any other.
PKSlavtcheff,
Love Tune Fox!
I had to take a couple of months off from banjo lessons when a family member was injured. Once I found Tune Fox, I was able to pick up where I left off. I’ll definitely resume lessons this month, but am still going to use this stellar app to improve my skills. I’ve had a couple of minor issues when on iPad, but it’s been mostly smooth sailing. I use Bluetooth headphones with one ear on and the other off, so I can hear my mistakes (or lack of em!) I love that you can change app settings to help you improve playing by ear, playing faster, and slowly adding challenges. CAN’T THANK YOU ENOUGH TUNE FOX! Well worth the reasonable price.
Jjenney2019,
I’ve been looking for this!
As a newbie banjo player, I’ve been looking for an app where I could practice and go at my own pace! This is better than I could’ve imagined! I love how you can slow the tempo and make it easier and harder, based on your progress. I love how it shows the tabs. Lessons are bite sized, so progress feels easy! Thank you for making this! I recommend it to everyone!
Catbee is scared,
Shucks
This sounds really cool! But I haven’t used it yet..and I probably never will. You need to pay for a subscription which is totally fine I’m sure it’s worth it but I personally can’t pay so bye-bye Tunefox. Also please don’t get me wrong, a company should do what they need to do to pay their employees and feed themselves so please Please don’t spite them for making it subscription only I think it’s better than barely being able to do anything because you don’t have a membership. So yeah I’m not at all mad more like “oh well” anywho from what the other comments say it’s a great app so if you can are willing to you should.
password troubles,
What I have been missing
This app has helped me get back into picking up my banjo and guitar. I had continuous frustration and just gave up several times before. This app provides a continuous song loop at various bpm and lick change-outs which has allowed me to figure out melodic vs Scruggs distinction. I wish I had this many years ago!!
I can’t wait for more songs and licks to be added.

I ask that there be a lick “companion” where you can start composing and it gives you options and variations on what to go on to next.

The visual timing on the tab is a huge bonus

I also would like to see some Celtic tunes added too, along with Christmas tunes (esp What Child is This).

When I first paid for a 3 month subscription I couldn’t actually get access to all content. Bennett worked with me for a few days, I sent proof of payment and they manually opened my account. I couldn’t be happier. I don’t believe there is any better learning tool for banjo available. Highly recommend.
Doc_C,
Time to pick up the banjo again.
Was learning banjo many years, and life happened. Started again and looked for a teaching app. Wow, there are many out there, some very good, a lot, not so much. Tunefox is one of the more expensive, but well worth the money. Many options in learning how to play and improve your skills.
