Tunnel of Hope is the Sarajevo war tunnel that saved the city. It is now a museum featuring exhibits which testify to the suffering of the citizens of Sarajevo during the war from 1992 to 1995.
In order to reach the free territories, many people risked their lives by running across the Sarajevo airport runaway which was under the constant sniper fire. Sadly, many were unsuccessful.
Due to a large number of fatalities, the citizens decided to dig a secret tunnel. Without machinery or proper equipment, after six months of continuous digging on July the 30th 1993 the tunnel under the Sarajevo airport runway was opened.
This museum is unique in the world. It features is a small hand-dug tunnel that saved the city and ensured the survival of 300,000 citizens of Sarajevo.
