Description

This app includes a 13 page social story about using words to ask for what you want, and a simple visual support for manding, or asking for different objects or activities.

The story focuses on why it’s important to tell people what you need or want, and the visual tool helps people who are non-verbal to ask for 9 specific things.

The app opens up to a menu that allows the user to read the story, or access 9 buttons that “speak” when tapped asking for different items or activities.

“Mands” or requests are typically the easiest type of speech to teach children because they lead so directly to, and in fact specify, a reinforcer. Certain individuals, particularly those with a communication delay as someone diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, may need more direct instruction in learning to “use their words” to get what they need or want.

Social stories are an important type of visual support often used with children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome or other special need. Teaching conversational skills to any child may be easier and less stressful when visual supports, like social stories are used. This social story uses simple text and descriptive pictures to explain why and how to use words to ask for what you want or need.

Social stories were first defined by Carol Gray in 1991 and are commonly used to break down a task or social situation into small and easy to understand steps, often accompanied by descriptive pictures. Social stories are easy to implement and are used by many professionals for a wide range of behaviors and skills.

Mascareno,
Eh.
So not worth the $3. You can't add different desired items to the ones there your stuck with the 9 they give you. It should be free. I'm rather upset with the making of this app.
Heartsopenwide,
Doesn't work
Pictures don't speak when you click on them. Disappointed
Iz Family,
Way too complex for young children! Very misleading.
This app is geared toward children on the Autism spectrum, but could in theory be used by anyone with speech delays. Social stories can be a wonderful tool for encouraging communication, unfortunately this app is way too complex to be effective. Children with speech and/or comprehension issues respond much better to short direct instructions or phrases, and this app is far too wordy. The sentences are much too long and for someone like my son who has very little language, it's far too confusing. He couldn't follow it and therefore it didn't hold his attention. He's 4 and understands most of what is being said to him, as long as it's direct. He does very well with most social stories and tends to enjoy them. This may be useful for some situations, but not for ours. Rather misleading and disappointing. This app should be geared toward older children who aren't as far behind in areas of communication.
Toulouse Trebek,
Worked until I upgraded my IOS
This simple app works if you haven't upgraded to IOS6 yet, otherwise it only half works. You get the story audio if you have it set to Read to Me, but you don't get the visual cartoons. So it's useless at this point until they fix it. Try the new Ablenet app- it's free.
Lovetopretend,
Autistic son
This app did not work when I went to the use my words screen. I like the story depictions but it easily allows you to turn the page without finishing the words on the page. There are no return to home, back, or repeat buttons which are helpful when you want to start over. Autistic children need repetition to learn. I don't recommend purchasing the app. It needs a lot of work to make it worth the purchase.
WinstonMomma,
Did not work
We paid for this app and it does not work! This is the 3rd one we purchased and all 3 different apps won't work! Scam?
Anil $hekhar,
