Description

In art, a value (or tone) is how light or dark a colour is. If you're learning to paint or draw, doing value studies is an excellent place to start. These small, loose sketches in greyscale show where shadows fall and highlights appear. These are particularly useful when the subject is more complicated and it's hard to see through the colours to show the subtle shadows.

If you're learning to paint or draw, value studies are a surefire way to improve both your artwork and how you visualise references in your mind. People often use photo editors to convert a colour photo to black and white... this is helpful, but this app goes further.

By using Value Study, you can flick between levels of detail. Maybe you want to start with just black and white to get a base down, then add in extra values one by one to build up your understanding of the reference you are studying.

You can even take it a step further and select all areas with matching tones. Click one of the values along the bottom in the greyscale palette to see all areas that match it in the image, so you can focus on one value while painting it. For example, in a portrait, this could mean seeing how different parts of the body have the same amount of shadow despite potentially looking wildly different when viewed in colour.

Value Study is a tool, not to replace your value studies but to enhance them and significantly help beginner artists know where to start when looking at complicated reference imagery.

Firstly, I have been pleasantly overwhelmed with the positive feedback and support of Value Study Pro. Thank you all so much!

This update has a focus on accessibility and customisation:

- New languages! German, French, Spanish and Italian. This is exciting but daunting as it's so easy to make mistakes. Please let me know if you would like to assist with improving the translations for these languages or adding more.

- Added "Customise value scale" to the settings page so you can choose to flip the ordering of the values or to start at 0 instead of 1 for the numbering.

- Added an "Action label" to indicate what you've just clicked. This includes the panels you've opened or the actions you've taken, such as "Flipped image" or "Portrait mode on". If you don't want this to show, you can deactivate it in the settings.

- Many small bugfixes and laying the groundwork for further improvements.
2.0.2
2023-04-03
This has been a long time coming. Value Study version 2.0 is full of subtle improvements based on feedback (which I am very thankful for!) through reviews and emails.

It is also exciting for me to announce Value Study Pro. This is an affordable paid upgrade to Value Study. All existing features will always be free, but if you upgrade to Pro, you will have extra convenience features and the ability to customise further the value studies produced.

Let's start with what's in Value Study Pro:

Value outlines
- You can now easily switch between seeing the values filled in or outlined like a drawing.
- If you select a value and enable outlines simultaneously... you will see the selected value filled in with all others outlined. This feature has been the most highly requested, so I'm excited for you all to try it out!

Customisable image stabilisation
- Everyone can turn image stabilisation on/off in settings. With Pro you can take it a step further and use a slider to tweak it further... this is particularly effective when the value outlines are enabled.

Portrait mode
- Remove the background from portraits so you can focus on the people in your image without the background affecting the values shown.

Gallery
- The new gallery tab lets you open multiple images at once. You can switch between them easily by swiping on the image (while zoomed out) too!
- This becomes incredibly useful when used for a series of images taken from different angles, such as a person turning around

Version 2.0 updates (all included in the free tier):

- Dark mode!
- A massive under-the-hood rework, enabling new features to be added.
- Show the value number under each value swatch (this can be toggled in the settings)
- Improved support for file formats: RAW, HEIC, WebP
- Ability to flip the image horizontally
- Doubled the maximum number of values

Version 2.0.2 fixes an issue where the settings menu flickers and could get stuck.

1.6.1

This version should fix the issues with v1.6 on iPad. I really appreciate the messages and reviews mentioning the problems, in a respectful and polite way. Apologies to all those affected!

- New design! It may be a small change... but it's exciting, the boxy value selection buttons have now been replaced with circular buttons that show the selection colour as a ring around the selected value.
- Reworked usage of the Photo Library to fix some search-related bugs (thanks to one of the reviews for pointing that out!)
- Added custom selection colour to the settings page, under a new "Customisation" heading. Note: currently the Reset button will reset the colour too.
- Added a menu to the image view and moved the "Add to photos" into the new menu, along with the settings, as it was so hidden people kept asking how to save their value studies!

- Improved the quality of the edges of values by ensuring less pixelation, with a new feature called Image Stabilisation.
On Live Filter mode this also means less flickering on the edges of objects.

- Added a settings menu.
Now that Value Study is beginning to have more features and improvements, the settings menu gives access to an advanced section which for now will mainly be used to help debug any issues.
1.4
2022-01-19
- Introducing Live Filter!
The new Live Filter mode adds a real time video filter, which includes all of the functionality from the existing image mode (such as colour selection and configuration of tones).
- Vastly improved performance of colour selection, building upon the performance increase from v1.3, removing the need for loading spinners altogether.
1.3
2021-10-21
- Big improvement for performance, making it much quicker to switch between selected values
- Selecting a value while the original photo is showing will now switch back to show the values

sophiebeanzee,
Wonderful app and major improvements!!!
I wrote a review last year but I wanted to write another quick one. Once again I’ve used this app for art projects and it has saved my life. Completely!! I don’t have to go through in PS and manually add in the pixelations. Also thank you for confusing to improve every month! Thank you as well for updating the pixelation feature! This will further help a lot for me in my art journey and especially value studying, defining value edges is still very difficult.

Abt the app: Sometimes when I would go in to edit some of my high detailed images it would definitely work, but it wouldn’t be as crisp when the separation was added as I imagined it might be. So want I to thank you for improving that! Once again love this app and I’ll continue to be using it!!! ❤️😉
Disappointed, but hopeful,
Fantastic!! Perfect!!
I’m taking an art class and we have to turn in a NOTAN. Quick explanation, a NOTAN is a value study. It would be what you’d see if you squinted and could only see in black and white. Sometimes they are just black and white, sometimes 3-5 values. This app makes this so EASY because you can select any of those shades of grey and tap that value, that value only then turns green on your photo. Once you can see/draw that you can make another value green. In no time a person who doesn’t see values (like me!) can learn to see the difference. My art homework just became possible! Thanks, from someone just starting out in art!!!
Whackad00,
Great updates
I am learning to paint and still have trouble distinguishing values. This app is perfect for planning my paintings and checking my progress. I love the new features, especially the ability to adjust the level of detail. I haven’t used the value outline or portrait tools yet, but I think they will be useful as well. I am happy to pay for these upgrades! Also love that the one-time fee includes future updates. Keep up the good work!

Very cool
I really like this as it is. I am making one improvement suggestion that would be of great help to artist. If we could select more than one value at a time in the highlight feature that would be awesome. It would be so helpful to be able to highlight several value areas at once so as to see them in groups and understand how to treat them in a drawing or painting.
TJPETERSON,
Amazing App
Incredibly useful. Thank you to whoever made this! Had to come and edit after months of using. My art has improved 10x just because of this app. Here’s hoping this app sticks around forever. Another edit after update and pro version. I didn’t think it was possible to improve on this app and you’ve done it. Thank you so much
Unlikely Artist,
Exactly what I was looking for!
I haven’t used the app extensively but I’m very appreciative of the developer for making a tool that should be perfect for my art journey. I can already tell it is going to help me understand value and shapes much better than traditional methods. The highlighting feature is awesome and the simplicity of the app is great as well. Thank you for making this wonderful tool!
New Weaver,
Handy Tool
Quick and easy to use, and it’s free! Additional feature that would be nice to have, and that I’d be willing to pay for:
- ability to select a contiguous value area and push it into a different value level (the camera often captures shadows and the sky darker than they are)
Stofferay,
Very Useful
A great app for manipulating drawing references.

3 things that I would like to see in a future update:

1) Threshold: would be nice to adjust the threshold with a slider control when an image is reduced to 2 values.

2) Blur: one thing that’s useful in distilling what shapes are important when drawing is the practice of squinting to make the reference a little blurry. It helps with both simplifying values and shapes. This effect could be achieved with a blur slider.

3) Invert: a quick tap to invert the values would be useful as it can sometimes reveal compositional balance issues in the same way as the flip horizontal feature does.
TaoTC,
Wow! Artist’s delight and foto fun!!
Couldn’t be happier with this app! It allows me to pick the number of values to see and even highlights each in green as you go up the scale. Trains my eye to see the values in everyday photos and this take better pictures and make better art. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
A Flithy Casual,
Beginner’s, You NEED this!
So, I’m an absolute beginner. I’ve never drawn in my entire life. Learning value is one of the fundamental’s and THIS application makes it extremely simplified.

The + and - at the bottom of the image is a value scale, I did not know that at first, so if that tidbit helps someone, good. You can literally set the scale of how many highlights - mid tones - darks you want to incorporate.

No bells or whistles…just value!

Hope it help y’all with y’all values and where to apply them. I’m definitely not a paid reviewer, employee, etc. and I approve this message! ✌️
