Description

One of the 10 best JRPGs available on iOS! -TouchArcade.com

Vigil RPG is a single-player, 8-bit-style, premium RPG, where *every* battle — not just boss fights — is quick, yet involves interesting decision-making.

Take on the role of a solo hero on a quest to discover the hidden cause behind the sudden appearance of marauding bands of goblins and monsters!

Vigil RPG strives to be the ideal pocket-size turn-based RPG, by incorporating these features that you may come to wish that every mobile game had:

• Created by a one-person development team with a design goal of maximum FUN — not maximum monetization! Vigil RPG has no IAPs, ads, stamina timers, or even "leave a review!" nags. If a feature doesn't add fun, then it didn't make the cut.

• Meaningful decision-making in every combat — even vs. non-boss enemies! Every enemy has unique attack patterns and "tells" for a clever player to overcome. Healing is hard to come by outside of town, so employing efficient battle strategy is important and rewarding.

• Fast turn-based combat! Select an action and launch each combat round in a single tap — no multi-level menus to navigate through. Each round takes about one second to play out. Zip through battles quickly against easy enemies; take your time to consider your strategy vs. tougher foes!

• No annoying tropes common to console-port RPGs: No imprecise on-screen D-pad; just tap your destination to move. No save points, or manual saving; your progress is continually auto-saved, even mid-battle!

• Absolutely no Internet connection required! Play from start to closing credits in Airplane Mode!

• Unlike many other mobile game apps, doesn't unduly drain your phone's battery! Vigil RPG is an iOS exclusive, 100% implemented in Apple's native Objective-C language — no bulky 3rd-party frameworks!

• The "turns spent" breakdown on the Hero Stats page now additionally breaks out extra turns spent fleeing from foes when the ELUDE ability was used.
• On the Store page and the Hero Stats page, tweaked how the numeric value associated with weapons, amulets, and armor are displayed to make their functionality more easily understood. (Namely: Base weapon damage; damage added to the hero's magical attacks; and damage reduction from enemy attacks, respectively!)

2022-03-16

Fixed a bug where if the game was ended in mid-combat against a Wereboar, then when the game was later continued, the Wereboar would be kind of sleepy, and would always drop his axe in the next round of the resumed combat, instead of what he was actually supposed to do that round!

Praise for Vigil RPG update 1.2.1:

• "Before, not feel so good after game load. Now, me always ready to swing axe at silly hero! Grawr!" -Willy the Wereboar

Battling those tricky Swamp Bats got you down? Never fear! Now you can stop by the nearby Shaman's Hut to heal up, instead of having to head all the way back to the inn in town! Huzzah!
1.1.1
2015-06-01
Some minor balance changes for you in this update! (Nothing major, as overall I'm super happy with the game's balance!)

- Increased Mana Strike damage by 1 to make it a more attractive alternative to Sunder, and to make late-game magic-heavy skill loadouts more fun!

- Metal Beetle's shell is now easier to crack!

- Tank Goblin's damage is reduced by 1 (but his HP is increased slightly) to make him less punishing to battle against!

Also, fixed a bug where the minibosses in the final dungeon would sometimes not respawn when the hero returned to town. (This fix actually makes the final dungeon EASIER, due to the substantial HP heal the hero gets when defeating those bosses!)

Got any complaints? Compliments? Reach out via our website, or @AggroMagnetGame on Twitter!

If you like Vigil RPG, please leave a fresh review! Vigil RPG features NO in-game review nags, so this is the only time you'll hear me ask! Thanks! :-)

1.0.6
2014-12-04
• "Could we find more like that?" - Added an achievement for defeating a level 8 or higher enemy without taking any damage, and ending the battle with more MP than the battle was started with!

• Transparent PROTECT shield - The hero can now see Swamp Bats' action cues after defending with the PROTECT spell.

• Ethereal vulnerability - Ghosts are no longer invulnerable to the SPARKSTORM spell.
1.0.5
2014-11-22
Fixed a bug where the mini-bosses in the citadel dungeon were in violation of Goblinoid Rule #76.
1.0.4
2014-11-19
• Bo the Bartender is now much more eager to share his advice for heroes who are hunting Swamp Bats.

• Your heroics will now be properly reflected on the Vigil RPG GameCenter leaderboards even if you were offline for the entire play session when your score was earned!

• Fixed a bug where the text on a few story pages was being cut off on iPad and iPhone 4. Because, you know, uh, those iPads can be pretty small, sometimes. If you squint.

• Fixed a bug where a variant of the good old TCELES B HSUP magic spell could accidentally manifest on the world map.
1.0.3
2014-11-15
• Fixed a rare crash that could occur upon restoring a game that had previously been closed immediately after the hero was defeated in battle while in a dungeon. (Call it the "ragequit" crash!)

• Fixed a bug where the hero could become a zombie -- still alive, but with 0 HP! -- when defeated by a parting-shot attack from a fleeing enemy.

• The "big hit" sound effect now plays when the hero gets poisoned by a Giant Spider. (Protip for reading this far in the patch notes: Always defend in round 2 versus those spiders!)
1.0.2
2014-11-14
• You have found the Boots of Speed! Movement speed on the world map and in dungeons increased by 90%!

• For any heroes who "bravely ran away" and were awarded the Unscathed achievement, congratulations! ...The rest of you have to earn it now by actually *defeating* your enemy without taking damage.

• Your hero now helps you remember which way you were going by continuing to face the same direction as they were originally after battles on the world map. How considerate!

• Hero facing now also persists even after restoring a saved game. Even nicer!

• Fixed an issue where a secret path in a dungeon was a little bit more secret than it was supposed to be: It was disappearing after the game was restored.

• For iPad and iPhone 4 heroes, the root beer served at the Honorable Heroes Tavern is a bit less potent: Star ratings on the quest details page of certain quests are no longer cut off.
1.0.1
2014-11-13
Just a single bug fix:

• Fixed a totally embarrassing crash bug that occurs when trying to respec the ICE spell at the training ground before buying any spell power item.

WRS15743,
Finally! An accessible RPG!
I don’t know how I missed this game all these years, but after searching high and low for an accessible RPG I finally found this, and I’m super happy I did.

This is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. I’ve tried so many different RPGs and deleted them for various reasons. But this developer has literally done every single thing right with this game.

It’s super easy to learn. There’s depth without it being overly complicated like too many RPGs are. It saves progress at all times. You can quickly hop in and out whether you have only a minute or hours to play. For busy people like me, this is huge. It means I can play at my own pace and always make some progress.

Also the file size is small, it hardly uses battery, there are zero ads or IAP, and the developer has kept this updated.

Thank you so much, developer. I was about to give up on finding a well done, simple but deep enough, RPG. I thought it didn’t exist. You’ve made my day and this will stay on my phone. If there was a tip option I’d gladly tip you. I really appreciate the rare developers like you who make good games and monetize them fairly. I just can’t say enough good things about this game.
Catman 63 ,
Wonderful old school RPG!!
I bought this as soon as I saw the graphics. This is old school all the way - even fown to the single developer working alone, just like those Atari 800 games I loved in the 1980s.

The gameplay is simple (which I love), the goals are clear, the music is GREAT, and the graphics - perfect! I don't like ultra-real 3D scenery except in racing games. Loved the goatee on my character too. I am happy with graphics just like these. Loads of similarities to the original Wizardry (the "stables - free!" Was a giveaway), which again is a great thing. I wish we had the original Wiz for iPhone...

The price is very reasonable, I appreciate the developer's efforts (I read the credits, Jon!) and am going to enjoy finishing this little gem.
Discostallion,
Please make more!
One of my absolute favorites. The graphics are budget, & the adventure is on the short side, but this is one of the most advanced & innovative games around.

It's the RPG equivalent of an old school hot rod: strip away all the excess weight, supercharge the engine, then tune & balance it all to perfection. The "engine" in this case is the combat system, and it's a nitro burning beast.

I wholeheartedly recommend Vigil to anyone considering it, and I sincerely hope that AggroMagnet brings more games like this to market.
MikeTMorpheus,
Great App and Inspiration - Hoping for Sequel
I purchased this app after reading your interview on making a one-man game. Thanks for putting so much awesome info in the credits/acknowledgements. It is definitely challenging but also a lot of fun to play! I'll definitely buy your next game!
Styrixa,
Great game
In this RPG, player knowledge about monster behavior is translated directly into character success. You're awarded different stars (and in game rewards for your character) if you complete quests in fewer turns. Lots of fun and replay-ability.
Strangelander,
Clever, focused old-school RPG
I play this on breaks at work and it's perfect. Learning each enemy's attacks and optimizing your path are fun, or you can just go along for the ride. Well worth a buck! More, please.
Raztog,
Great little game!
I know I’m late to the party but what a great find this was.
Nottakenalready10kd,
Great classic experience!
Proof that you don't need a huge team of people to create a fun game. Enemies are dynamic in the sense that each encounter has a different strategy to finish with minimal damage taken. Many current RPG's feel far too easy as you breeze through them. This feels challenging without being overly difficult. The movement system is tied into the quest rewards; so it pays off to play in a smart way. As you progress you can unlock "key items" that help you on your journey, including the much needed ability to teleport back to town. Vigil RPG's strength is it's risk vs reward gameplay. You will need to balance out grinding for EXP and purchasing weapon/armor upgrades before you can take on bosses: All the while your turn counter ticks up for every world map movement you make. If you finish a quest in a certain amount of turns, the reward is better. Creating a challenging equilibrium of risking boss kills early for a better pay off and potentially take the extra turns penalty on death, or grinding a bit longer to make sure you won't die. I rate this game five stars not only because it is fun while still being somewhat hard, but it also offers a "replayability" factor via the turns system. Definitely worth skipping a meal at Mc Donald's for the hours of enjoyment! -Ryan K.
Vigil Suxxx,
Boo
Just falls flat... there is no healing... like what?
Dixie Flatline 999,
An elegant little old-school RPG
Vigil RPG hearkens back to a simpler time in gaming, and one that I mostly missed. The plot is simple and charming, and mostly an excuse to wander the countryside bashing monsters. The combat is straightforward but has some unexpected subtleties, since success depends on learning to recognize the monsters' attacking patterns and reacting appropriately.

The game also has the virtue that you can pick it up and play for a minute or two when you're free, rather than demanding that you sit down for a long session. It's great for filling in the gaps in a busy day.

Highly recommended!
