Description

Use your daily walking/running distance recorded from Health/Fitbit/Garmin app towards the Appalachian Trail. See other users completing the same route, and don't let them pass you!

WalkTheDistance uses your walking/running distance (daily steps) tracked automatically in the Health app and puts that data to good use, by showing you how far you would be if you were walking the Appalachian Trail, Boston Marathon, or other featured routes in cities and national parks around the world. There are many third-party apps that will sync your walking data to the Health App, but the Health App tracks your walking automatically using the pedometer built into the iPhone, so no external tracking app/device is necessary.

The Health App works for everyone, but this app also works with the Fitbit and Garmin apps!

The Appalachian Trail is really long. So we added checkpoints along the way to help you stay motivated. For the Appalachian trail, checkpoints are shelters where you can "stay the night", along with some points that provide a good view. Checkpoints vary by walk, and of course you cannot unlock checkpoints until you reach them!

Walk with other users! Walk with everyone, or just walk with your friends. You can easily add friends to walk with you on your walk. Get notified when someone passes you. Stay motivated and don't let them beat you!

This app is "activate it and leave it". It uses virtually no power while in the background. It pulls your walking/running distance from the Health app once every hour in the background, or every time you open the app. When you reach checkpoints or get passed by friends, you will get notifications on your phone letting you know.

Free walks in each category (Appalachian Trail, Marathons, Cities, National Parks), then other walks are available for purchase for $0.99 (or equivalent local currency).

Feedback welcome! This app was built based on feedback from users. There is an "email me" link under settings. We would love to hear what routes you want added and what features you'd like to see.

MrsHerb,
Love this app
My husband and I live in a senior community and the Appalachian Trail runs nearby. We walk daily and have really enjoyed the app, which we have used daily for nearly a year. It’s a great motivator, especially as we started to complete sections.
We started in Georgia in late April 2020. Now it’s February 2021, we’re in Virginia and it’s near home so we’re virtually walking through familiar parts of Loudoun County. The app is fun and motivating. The developer is responsive when I provide feedback. And I’ve learned a lot about the Appalachian Trail and the Appalachian Trail festival in Round Hill, VA. HOPEFULLY, COVID will be history and the festival can happen next year.
I have shared this app with friends, our fitness director at ASHBY Ponds, and a few doctors. It’s really fun and I recommend it.
Leia Norwalker,
It’s like Zoom for thru hiking
So I may never walk any of these trails in real life, but I can live with that. I still have a sense of accomplishment! The app works well and allows you to walk with friends which didn’t seem important last October when I bought it. But then along came 2020 and the only way to walk with friends is virtually. I foresee that in the post COVID world, doing something virtually, will start to be recognized as an actual accomplishment not just ‘with a sense of accomplishment’. “So” the interviewer asks the job applicant, “what did you do during the lockdown, after you lost your job?” “Well” answers applicant, “ I hiked the Appalachian Trail virtually and am working on the PCT!” Now that’s a go getter we should hire!
upset in maine,
Great app. Totally worth installing
Fantastic app. I’m really glad I found it while searching for virtual hikes/runs. All of my distance auto uploads from my Apple Heath, which gets its data from my Garmin Connect app. Every day or so, I see a a new notification saying I’ve reached “Xxx shelter” or whatever and I click into the app to see my progress.

The prices on the longer hikes are totally worth it and I didn’t have any issues with paying for them. I reached out to the developer with a couple quick questions and he was super responsive.

If looking for an app to help with a little motivation with a monthly or yearly mileage goal, this is your app.
KAB0307,
Great motivation
I have been using the app mostly for the Appalachian trail hike. I plan to do a thru hike soon and it’s neat to get some info on things I can expect to see along the trail. I’m also trying to work myself up to 35 miles a day so while I am on the trail I can hopefully get right around 26 miles a day give or take depending on available shelters. Figured a marathon a day seemed like a good goal to keep me right around 3 months and it also seemed like a suitable trail name!😁 This is a nice motivator to keep me or anyone for that matter on pace with their goals. Also, very happy with the responsiveness of the developer. Very personable and seems to have customer satisfaction in mind.
John WTD,
Adds fun to walks and hikes.
I’ve been an avid hiker for many years never was a step-counter, but when I read an article about Walk The Distance it sounded fun and I decided to give it a try. I just completed the Appalachian Trail and am starting the John Muir Trail today. It’s fun to work toward completing a goal every time you go for a hike, and it adds some motivation to get out there and do it. And every day it tells you how much progress you’ve made. My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of five is that I wanted to go back and find when I started my AT effort and the “history” feature wouldn’t go all the way to the beginning. I highly recommend!
JRG-V,
Love it, but now can’t resume my walk :(
I love this app and I’ve gotten at least 10 people to start using it, too, bc I am so excited about it. Unfortunately, I had to change phones recently and when I activated WTD on my new phone, I could not resume my walk. I was on AT part 6, but the only options I can see (literally — these date the only options on my phone when I click ‘Appalachian Trail’) are for me to start from the beginning, start at AT part 2, or start at AT part 10, skipping parts 7, 8, and 9 (plus the rest of part 6). I am really bummed about this and happy to take any advice for how to fix it. :(
Weaver Cat,
Great motivation to walk
I have been using this for about a year now to virtually walk the Appalachian Trail, something that I have always wanted to do, but at 69 with a total knee replacement, I didn't feel like it was a good idea.

My only issue is that at certain points there is a small charge to go to the next level. I had a heck of a time figuring out how to make the payment. Eventually, I did get it taken care of it. II am up in the VA part of the trail.

When this is completed, I am going to try another walk. The app has a lot of options of walks available.
Off grid wanderer,
I miss real trails
I downloaded this app last year when everything was locked down, and all my local trails were closed. I had a long AT section planned for fall 2020 that hasn’t happened yet, but between April and December, I walked the entire AT on this app. In January, I started on the PCT, and I have made it to section J by the end of May. I hope to finish it this year, perhaps with an actual boots on the ground section this summer. Next year I hope to be out on the AT again, looking for water and shelter every day. Until then, I am enjoying my virtual hikes.
Hoagie B,
Trail hiking in the days of the virus
My hiking buddy told me about this app and since our group can’t travel and hike together right now we decided to hike virtually. This has been a great motivator and it is fun to see where we all are on the trail. I know I need to do my short distances during the week because our trail blazer will blow past me on the weekend. So it definitely gets me off the couch and outside. Good training for when we do hit the AT later in the year.

Yes it is simple without a lot of sparkle but really fun and much appreciated during these weird days!
llmom24,
Absolutely love this App
In late March I heard about this app - quickly did the monuments in DC and started the AT, this has been a life saver during the pandemic and a fun way to track miles walked. I have hiked over 500 miles of the trail in real life and COVID-19 messed with my plans to hike GA in the spring. I have caught up to where I have actually hiked the trail and am enjoying every second. After a recent replacement of my phone, I had issues with the APP and appreciated the help to get me back in business. I look forward to new trails in the future. Thanks!!
