Snohoman,
Awesome app with awesome support
Walkmeter is by far the app if it’s kind that I’ve come across. I’ve tried several others but either the GPS is wonkie or the app was unreliable or the data/tracking stats just never seemed right. Walkmeter gets all these things accurately and has even more features. I love the announcements as they keep me motivated during my hikes. And being able to edit a route name and have the cumulative data for the route automatically update is fantastic. And I can’t say enough about the support. The included help guide us great, the help in the website is even better, but when I still have a question I get responses in less than two days. Other app developers should take notes on how to provide good support. I can’t say enough about this app. The free version is great but the paid version is even better and well worth the latte you give up to buy it.
CRSlack,
Elite is worth it for the price
I recommend the app I have solved most of my issues with it. It has a steep learning curve but the payback is that the app has helped me increase my pace and raise my heart rate.

I have had my frustrations and still have not solved all my issues. This app is hugely ambitious and it certainly has to appeal to walkers with OCD. But the price is reasonable so I can endure some learning curve. Still reluctant to start the app on my Watch. But I can start it from the phone okay. It took a while to figure out how to get the heart rate to show but it does work. I figured out how to edit route names. I figured out how to get announcements. Still working on fine tuning that. My greatest interest is in keeping cadence. Still looking for strategies to maintain a high cadence. It is easy for it to flag.

Old review: Very frustrating. I upgraded to elite but the Applewatch app was already installed. Little did I know that I would have to reinstall it on the watch to get the elite features. One workout lost. It stopped twice during my walk. Was it something I did? Restarting it is challenging with a sweaty finger. I am a pretty good troubleshooter but not when I am power walking. I have tried renaming a route. The instructions say it is possible. Yes but try to do it. Features galore but hard to use.
Hosea_12:6,
Decent except for heavy map averaging
I first tried another app, but it insisted that you start the “free” 7 day trial of the paid version first. At least this app does not do that.

The free version offers quite a bit including speed, map, keeping historical data, weekly monthly, etc running sums.

My one beef with this app is that it does an overly heavy averaging of the gps location. As I am walking, the dot on the map keeps spot on. There is a blue trail that jumps up to the dot every 4-6 seconds, so that is the frequency of the position stored. When I go around a corner or turn around and head back, the blue line starts shifting for the next 4 or 5 “updates”. So it is averaging the points and overwriting data. The path ends up cutting through yards and even houses. There are a couple of settings affecting smoothing of the path, but no way to turn off the averaging. Since my current spot on the map is exactly right, I really don’t understand why the app needs to do any averaging. (I’m glad my car’s guidance app doesn’t or I would be driving across a lot of parking lots.) I would much appreciate a choice to turn off the averaging and a choice of a higher position data record rate (1-2 seconds)
iPadiMac,
Mixed Feelings!
I’m not sure what it says about an app when you initially find it is less frustrating to use the Apple Workout App on your watch, and import the results for analysis, than it is to use the App directly on the Watch. The app seems to work fine when the Watch is set to record on the phone, but switching to record on the Watch causes it to feel like it has stopped working. The faces don’t show data and I keep getting text saying I need elite when I have it on the elite trial, and it feels unresponsive. The phone app interface is clean, but swiping though title-less pages, some of which are blank, feels like it is missing something. Fixing this and getting a personalized interface takes a lot of trial and error because it is not always clear what each page does and sometimes just changing font size creates havoc. For example, on the overview you get four pieces of data on small font and one piece on medium. I’ll renew the elite subscription because I like looking at the maps of my walks, and the data, and the Apple Fitness app is hopeless in that regard.
kieranicole3,
Not accurate
So, I don’t usually do reviews but since I’ve had such a difficult time with knowing the distance that I walk, I thought I’d share my experience with whoever is reading this.
So, I started power walking the same paths daily. I noticed about a month ago that the faster I would walk the same exact path, it would record less the amount of distance. I was noticing walking about 2 miles that I would get 1.6, 1.85, 2.2 and so on. I kinda didn’t think to much in to it. However on Monday (today is Wednesday) I forgot to turn my walking app until approx .5 mile in and my total distance was 3.08 The following day (Tuesday) I turned it on right as I hopped out of my car. My total distance that day was 2.88 miles, a lot less then mondays distance. So, I downloaded run keeper and today it came out to 3.4miles and proves that this app is not accurate for some reason.
Maybe they need to update it because it should go by gps. Other then that I think the set up of the app is wonderful. It’s easy to use and haven’t had any issues having it run in the background as I play music, get on the internet, or text. Good app, just not accurate and I will be using run keeper from now on.
nsvfl,
Pedometer not working
****** UPDATE - switched from four stars to five stars because of the excellent customer service which not only responded to my question, but also made a suggestion which fixed my problem. This has to be the best customer service I’ve ever experienced. Thank you so much. *****
I’ve been a faithful user of this app for years so I decided to pay to upgrade. The pedometer (the main reason I wanted to upgrade) has never worked. Seeing the great developer response on here along with a support website, I wrote to that hoping for help. No response. Maybe I’ll receive one on here. I’d really like to be able to use it.
Freemybutt,
Great when it works
I have been using this app to document my daily walks for a couple of years. I have NEVER had a perfect Activity month due to either an app crash or the Activity app doesn’t update when I hit the end button. I have already contacted the app people who, of course, blamed the Activity app that came with the iPhone. That still doesn’t explain the crashes. It seems just stopping to take a picture is enough to do it. It’s frustrating knowing you did the walk, but not getting credit for it. Therefore, I am switching to another means of recording my walks until these issues are resolved.

Review update: after corresponding with Ronni from support we figured out the issue. I was trying to do too many things at one time so now I only have the app open that I am currently using. Presto, no more issues. The app has been working flawlessly since.
EST NYC,
Suddenly inaccurate?
I have used this app for years, and happily paid for Elite. It’s been great. Today I went for a walk on a trail I’ve taken many times before. I was impressed at how much faster my speeds had gotten. But strange things were happening. I’d lock my phone, unlock it to check my progress, and suddenly it was telling me my mile pace was way way faster than it should have been. Leaving my phone unlocked, while not practical, helped a bit. When I finished my round trip on the trail, my numbers and splits were all better than I’d had before. Checked the map, and, for some reason Walkmeter is thinking a round trip on this hiking trail, a mile out and a mile back, is actually more like 2.3 miles. Only a few weeks ago Walkmeter was properly seeing this as a 2 mile walk. So my distance is way off, screwing up everything else. What is going on?
annie_g,
Good, but could use some improvements
I paid for the Elite level of this app for one main reason - to be able to start and stop the timer from my Apple Watch. And of course to be able to glance at the elapsed time while walking. Starting and stopping the app from my watch works about 75% of the time, but there are too many times I have to pull my phone out. I make sure to open the app on my phone before I leave the house, but sometimes it still tells me to open it. Also, sometimes the info doesn’t transfer correctly to the Health and Activity apps.

Otherwise, the app has way more info than I probably need, but I like seeing the distance, time, and map of each walk. So if there was better communication between the watch app and iPhone app I would give it 5 stars.
GrantW3,
Paths are noisy and therefore too long
The idea behind this app is great, and I like the interface as well. Unfortunately the paths it records are often *very* inaccurate and zig-zaggy and so wind up being too long, sometimes by 50% or more. This makes the app pretty much useless for me, despite my wanting to like it.

Today, for example, I recorded over 3 miles for what I know to be a two-mile walk. Looking at the map, I could see why: where I had actually walked a straight-line path, the map showed numerous spurious loops and switchbacks. My supposed pace during this segment was 6 minutes/mile.

This may be due to inherent noisiness in the location information provided by the iPhone. If so, the solution would be to use much longer time intervals (e.g., 1-2 minutes) between samples. This would ensure that the actual distance walked between samples is relatively large compared to the inevitable slop in the location info.
