WBEZ now supports CarPlay. Stream WBEZ 91.5 or Vocalo 91.1 directly from CarPlay interfaces. You can also browse podcasts and replay shows you missed from the airwaves.
We also added support for audio scrubbing. So you can easily skip forward or backward in whatever audio you're listening to.
Finally we have streamlined the homepage to make shows more accessible, updated the UI and added several bug fixes.

Ad stopping stream fixed! Great app!
Update- thanks so much for fixing the issue I noted below. After working with your new app, I see that it is indeed a great update with many new features we didn’t have before. Thanks so much for your work!
So far, I prefer the other app because it was easier to navigate and cleaner visually. The new version is very granular, but I can see the benefits of it. Please add a fix or feature that allows the stream to continue after the initial WBEZ announcement. Right now, I have to hit play twice . Thanks!

Excellent news with a broad scope
Once upon a time, before digital took over, I relied upon the Chicago Tribune. I had time to read it. Now, our news sources and time is sparse. I don’t like the death of radio, either. When I lived in the south side of Chicago, we had poor digital connections, obviously due to racism. I needed a radio to hear the news. Now I am back on the north side and can connect. Why must we rely on digital?!

Poor UX, Invasive to phone usage
The new app is disappointing. Knowing I’d have an aversion to the known comforts of the old version - being someone who’s used it daily for 4+ years - I wanted to give it some time (month+) and despite trying for an open mind it’s hard not to feel the app was not only developed by folks who didn’t use the app, but it’s also absent basic developer app considerations & standards for users:
1. The app audio does not stop when I answer phone calls which is extraordinarily disruptive and dangerous if a call were an emergency. At a minimum it’s disorienting and creates unprofessional chaos on ad hoc work calls.
2. I cannot use my phone video function while using the app. It blocks/glitches the record button.
3. Audio does not stop playing when I take my headphones out out of the jack.
4. Navigating to previous hours to listen or view what’s upcoming used to be a simple swipe on a carousel. Now it’s a confusing series of unnecessary swipes with things nested nonsensically in various submenus. Sad UX.
5. Still no ability to stream to a bluetooth speaker.

A huge upgrade!
Just love the WBEZ app - easier to listen to live programming without it dropping, love how you can discover other highlights and stories to listen to, and it looks much more modern. I use the browse feature all the time. Highly recommend this convenient app for listening to WBEZ throughout the day, especially if you are commuting less in the car/using the car radio less frequently.

Amazing
When it comes to downloading an app on my iPhone, it is important to me that navigating through it is simple. I live a busy life, like most people, and cannot afford to spend a ridiculous amount of time learning how to use the app. I just want quick, easy access to my news. The update on WBEZ did just that! Simple and easy to utilize. So we’ll organized and nicely detailed. Designers did an amazing job. Bravo!

Almost always awesome
I use the app a lot because I listen while walking all over Chicago. (Yeah…not recommended to be under headphones whilst walking, beware robbers, etc etc.) One bug is the app’s inability to switch more than a couple times between stream sources. Going up and down elevators can cause it to bug out. Then you have to restart and endure again the startup ad. Maybe I need to input my member ID to miss those ads? Not even sure. But 4+ stars otherwise. Enjoy!

I’ve been using the WBEZ app for years, and this latest version addresses all of the issues I used to accept as just the price of accessing WBEZ outside of the car radio. Now, I almost prefer the app because I can easily tune into programs that I missed earlier in the day, rather than whatever is being broadcast live. Literally no complaints whatsoever!

Best Way to Listen to Radio (besides a radio)
WBEZ is my favorite station, and I loved listening to it whenever I could when I lived in the Chicago area. I have since moved a little further out and my radio no longer picks up WBEZ well. Now I can listen on my phone and even listen to reports I missed. A great app to be sure, a little spotty at times but that might just be my service.

Love, love, love it. Kind of miss the old app where the schedule was right there and you could go back and listen to programs from earlier or the day before. I know, I know. It’s still there in ‘schedule’, but it’s less easy now. It’s a bit busy for my tastes. However, still wonderful overall and I’ll probably see how great the updates are.

I love this app! The audio quality is clear and the content is interesting and varied. There truly is something for everyone here—from pop culture vultures to true crime aficionados, from sports fans to book worms, from Chicagoans to people all over the world. In particular, I love Reset for current events and Nerdette for book recommendations!
