Description

while True: learn() is a puzzle/simulation game about even more puzzling stuff: machine learning, neural networks, big data and AI. But most importantly, it’s about understanding your cat.

In this game, you play as a coder who accidentally found out that their cat is extremely good at coding, but not as good at speaking human language. Now this coder (it’s you!) must learn all there is to know about machine learning and use visual programming to build a cat-to-human speech recognition system.

This game fits best for...
- People who want to know more about how machine learning and related technologies work
- Parents and teachers who are looking for a fun and easy way to make an intro to logical thinking, programming, and technologies for kids
- Programmers who want to learn new concepts that they can apply to their own coding
- Those who want to play games and not feel guilty about ‘wasting their time’ (although we believe you shouldn’t feel guilty at all while playing games!)
- Players who like to keep their brains busy and working in different ways, while still having fun
- Gamers looking to improve their problem-solving skills and feel immense sense of satisfaction and achievement that comes along with it
- People who like smart cats

Learn how machine learning works in real life!

The game is loosely based on real-life machine learning technologies: from goofy Expert Systems to mighty Recurrent Neural Networks, capable of predicting the future. Don’t worry: it all plays out as a puzzle game. No coding experience required!

Train yourself into a data science wizard!

Drag objects around your screen with a mouse! Connect them with lines (oh yeah)! Try. Fail. Optimize. Try again. Then press “Release” button and see that sweet pieces of data flow smoothly through your screen.

Embrace an adventurous lifestyle of a machine learning specialist!

Designing a groundbreaking technology requires time, experience and money. That means you’ll have to work as a freelancer, with all the excitement that comes along with it. Receive emails! Accept contracts! Sit alone in a dark room for days without saying a single word! Socialize on forums! That’s what real data scientists do!

Coding just got real!

Our quests are based on actual problems, solved by machine learning. This includes building a self-driving car (with your cat as a pilot). And if you really want to test your programming might, you can become a CTO of a startup: it’s your skills and your schemes against the savage laws of the market! Earn a fortune, flip off your bosses and become a tech guru… Or lose everything and crawl back to the doorstep of HR department: at least it was worth trying, right?

Improve your gear, improve your life!

Once you ensure a stable cashflow, you’ll be able to buy yourself a bunch of fancy hardware to improve your performance. But it’s not just about the hardware! Buy yourself a new smartphone or a geeky figurine! Buy fancy outfits for your cat! Hell, you can even buy yourself an aloe!

Fun fact: this is what machine learning specialists actually do. Now, you can become one of them (minus the money)! while True: learn() is the best game about being a data science specialist because no one else has been weird enough to make another one!

Avid film viewer,
“It’s educational!”
I love programming games in general, but this one adds something special. I bought this thinking it would be like the rest, where you have a goal each level which you would solve with an ever expanding set of available commands. This game is that, but more.

I love that when a new concept is added, you are given the context of that concept originating in the history of machine learning. I really appreciate the links to articles and videos relating to those real world concepts.

I really feel like I’m learning a lot playing this game!
Bilogik,
Amazing game, deleted save after Halloween patch
Would be 5 star, if not for the fact that you completely erased all my saves with your new update. Have to start all over again.. once, and if I muster the strength to get my progress back, I’ll update to 5 starts again. For now, suffer alongside with me.

UPDATE: finally got to where I was before. Here are your well deserved five stars.
Anon grumps,
Good game with a few UI issues.
This is a cute and fun basic sorting based game, great for kids to learn the basics of statistics and programming, but it’s UI could definitely do with some work.

Copy /paste is always being triggered during drag/navigation which is super annoying, it would be better if this required a additional action or used an actual friendly button.

It’s very hard to see which wire goes to which node port a lot of the time because the wires connect mid way through the little port arrows rather than at the edge of the node, this could also be improved by using a nice curved line from the connections or even just a straight line out then a wire between.

Wiring connections is fiddly and could be improved with clearer hit zones and animations on the UI elements.

Very good game but upsetting feature and a bug
I love the game but it has 2 bugs: when I fail on a level sometimes it has a small green button that says d launch and it makes me give a loan and it shows a thing and continue and the button doesn’t work also after I go bankrupt it makes me cry because all me data and hard work is deleted :(
Strangechord,
Challenging game makes me think
Fun and satisfying game that challenges me to come up with more efficient solutions and become creative in how to solve the levels. No coding required and it’s also not an easy, do-nothing game which gives it all to you.

Worth the money!
Joejoe32,
Fun game for coders (has many typos)
I’m a programmer and I am enjoying this game. I’m learning a bit about machine learning (something I wanted to do anyway). The game does have a bunch of careless typos and spelling errors in the story part, but it doesn’t get in the way. I can’t figure out the difference between the StartUp daily graph colors (yellow vs orange??). The game could use a FAQ section. Would recommend the game to other coders.
dj afk,
I love the game, not the UI
I spend half my time readjusting the pieces. Eva use I accidentally moved them. The text is so tiny that I can’t read most of it, with no option to resize. Zooming in does not change text size. I get so annoyed with these things that I just don’t feel like playing.
Creditcard1711,
Where is the clipboard
When it teaches you something new, there are some options on the bottom, “view course” and “video” on the how it works in the real world panel. But when u click on them it just says saved to clipboard. I’d like to watch and review, BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THE CLIPBOARD IS.
vidiot.el,
Great game
Love the approach to learning ML in a pretty funny way.

I only with the start ups were a little more forgiving. I can get gold badges on most challenges, but there just seems no way to make money in the start ups but the first one.
mcarthey,
Just getting started
Just picked up the game so I’ll update my review as I play more but my first impression is it’s well made with a nice story. The issue I have immediately is the size of the text. Wow! It is so tiny I can barely read it on an iPhone X. Can that be modified somehow?
