Description

Make your stamp on the worlds of our Solar System!

World of Hex is a game of strategy played on a board as big as our solar system where the populated areas of the worlds are divided into hexagonal tiles, and each of those tiles is a game board — with a state that is alive in the cloud.

When you play a game within a tile, that tile stays as you left it until either you, or another player, chooses to play there too.

So you can claim territory by playing and winning, but you don’t only play for yourself; you also play for your faction.

What happens when you aren’t playing? What happens to the territory you’ve claimed? Well, you have an AI that will defend it for you.

When you start playing, your AI will only know a couple of commands, however as you build up more XP and level-up, you’ll be able to configure your AI to do more, and defend your territory with more ability. After some play, you will earn the ability to program your AI.

If you like a strategy, turn based game, then World of Hex is both simple to play but world-spanning in its scope.

Please note that World of Hex makes use of iCloud and as such, requires you to be logged into iCloud on your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV. On your iPhone or iPad please also be sure that you have iCloud Drive enabled. Apple requires this for World of Hex to operate correctly.

Game Story:
Society as we know it has failed.

Thanks to flawed political systems, global warming, and the reckless exploitation of resources, all of the old boundaries and loyalties are gone.

We live in a world where everyone belongs to one of four factions who are constantly vying for control over the Solar System.

Humanities colonies have been divided into world tiles. Control over these world tiles is contested by members of each faction.

This is where you come in. The more often you play, the more you can do for your faction. Your faction needs you!

Each world tile is further broken into territories. Control of a tile is achieved by ensuring that your faction controls the most territory within the tile.

Territory is claimed by building settlements that influence the surrounding territory. Enemies can threaten you, and overwhelm you if you don't defend effectively.

Settlements can be reinforced either by building them up, or spreading out and taking neighboring territory.

v2.0 and later versions of the game support an alternate story behind the game, though the game play is the same. For fans of The Expanse™, there are a number of optional visual elements that have been added. These are available via the themes button once you have access to your AI. Please note that these visual elements are provided as a tribute to The Expanse™ and in no way represent an offical endorsement of World of Hex.

v5.0 and later versions provide extensive support for Voice Over and provide two high contrast palettes designed for people who experience some forms of colour blindness. The palettes can be chosen from the Settings panel

WOH v5.0 Release Notes

Welcome to v5.0 and welcome back to World of Hex. Thanks for playing, especially those who have been playing since 2017.

This major update to the game brings support for VoiceOver and accessibility throughout the entire game. It's been a huge change to support this, and has taken an enormous amount of time and effort. If you are someone who uses VoiceOver please feel free to get in contact with any feedback at: [email protected].

In addition to VoiceOver support, two additional colour palettes have been added for those people who experience some forms of colour blindness. The palettes can be chosen from the new Settings panel.

Another change is one of necessity. When World of Hex was released, there was no filter applied to the players nickname, and as a result, some offensive names have made it into the system. v5 adds a new profanity filter on player names, and as part of this update, any existing player names that trigger that filter will have been changed to something inoffensive. If you are one of the players affected by this change, I'm sorry but there will be no exceptions. You can, if you choose to, reach out and request that the new name be changed to something else (that doesn't trigger the filter) by emailing me at [email protected]. Like any other system where people can join in and play, World of Hex aims to be welcoming, inclusive and friendly. There is no room for offensive language or behaviour.

As usual, some bugs have been fixed, notably:
1. On macOS, fixed a number of issues with the placement of tips and prompts if you resize the window or change to full screen mode.
2. Fixed the position of the game board, start and replay buttons on macOS and tvOS.
3. Changing orientation on iPhone now worked much more reliably.

And finally there have been some other improvements:
1. On iPhone, when panning or rotating a world, haptic feedback is now provided when world tiles pass the centre of the screen. This was added as part of the accessibility updates. You can disable this from the new settings panel.
2. In the world scores panel, your score is now highlighted.
3. On tvOS, a number of improvements when working with the Siri Remote for panning.
4. A new filter has been applied to player nicknames to help reduce the number of offensive nicknames in the system. If your nickname has been flagged as offensive, then you may find it has been changed to a randomly generated fantasy game name. If you want to change it, please contact [email protected]
5. Improved, dramatically, the animation when moving between planets and moons.

Thanks for playing World of Hex. This update is a small but important one. New players may have been really struggling to get their first games to work without a really annoying intermittent crash.

I'm pleased to say that this bug has been fixed in this update.

Thanks for playing World of Hex. With this update, a few large changes have been made.

* World of Hex is starting a new phase of enhancement, and to kick this off, the way text is displayed on the screen has been improved, so if you've seen a partial message, or been confused about something, perhaps this will help.

* On iPhone and iPad, support for Portrait mode has been added, at last! Yes, you can now play World of Hex one-handed on your iPhone or iPad whilst standing on the train commute to work. With this rather large change a number of related bugs have been fixed that have been plaguing players for a while now.

* New users are now introduced to their AI module right from the get go, so that they know there is more to the game to build towards. Did you know that you can program your own AI with commands to defend the world tiles you win? No? Well all you need to do is reach level 2, and access will be granted!

* The leader board now displays a more information about how well those players at the top have been doing.

* For those of you that have noticed that the Earth seemed to get confused about just where the Sun actually is, and turned the wrong face to the Sun, I believe I have finally fixed this. It won’t affect play at all, but it affects my sanity. So this way I get some peace of mind too.

* Finally, finally, World of Hex no longer stops your favourite music from playing when you launch the game! I’m sorry this one has taken so long.

* Panning a world on macOS now works as nicely as it does on iOS, iPadOS and tvOS. And it’s even nicer on those too!

* The player information panel now shows a small meter to indicate to you how much more you need to play before reaching the next level.

* Experience points (XP) can be earned faster now with the addition of a “win multiplier” for each world tile. If you, or someone from the same faction keeps winning consecutive games in a given world tile, then XP are earned much faster.

* On macOS, panning to rotate the selected planet or moon using two fingers now works as smooth as silk (finally).

* Fixed a number of nasty memory leaks and buggos.

* Fixed a problem where the colour of a tile was not changing after you win a game. This bug was introduced back when I added the Game Center Achievements. My apologies; it’s fixed again.

* A note for the wary. Apparently, if you force kill World of Hex, iCloud can get it’s knickers in a knot and stop sending the app the background notifications that allows it to keep the state of the world tiles up to date. If you’ve done this, and think the tiles are not accurate, then the only way to fix it (apparently) is to reboot the phone. Not my preferred advice to anyone but it’s all I got. I spent quite some time trying to work out if I’d done something wrong, but no…

* On the Apple TV, something special, well I think so. You can now zoom in and out in little bits.

This version addresses a number of quirks in the display of text on some devices where the text was incomplete. It also attempts to improve the initial tutorial when you first start playing.

My thanks to those individuals in the wonderful Apple Arcade community that have helped me identify these issues. World of Hex isn't a part of that service, however there are a lot of great games there you might like to try out in between your bouts of solar system conquest.

* For those The Expanse™ fans out there wondering why the Ring Gate is lacking definition, it was suffering a system failure and should be back to it's former glory now.
* Some people were being told over and over about the new achievements added earlier this year. Now we know they are great, but really, we don't need to harp on about it so much.

I've been hard at work, listening to feedback, and realising that people like to feel a sense of achievement. This major update tries to help with that by adding new Game Center Achievements. Some are easy to attain, some are quite hard. All are attainable. If you've been playing for a while, then where possible any achievements that the game can determine you have already earned will be applied (let us know if they aren't). The harder ones, like taking control, or conquering a tile or world will not be retroactively applied; that's in the too hard basket (even for me) for now; the rest should be pretty automatic.

Another thing I've done in response to feedback is add a little more smarts into the move validation so that if you try a move that would just result in it being a wasted move (i.e., you attempt to take a cell that would be immediately overpowered), the move will be rejected.

Goodness, no matter how nice you players are, the code just seems to have problems letting some of you enjoy yourselves. A bug fix was added at the last minute for a reasonably old bug causing the game to crash for some special, though unfortunate players.

And finally, because it seems to be standard these days, bug fixes and improvements.

The World of Hex has expanded! Did you know that there are colonies all over the solar system?

This is a huge update. Whilst the premise of the game remains, now you have an opportunity to explore and stake a claim beyond the confines of Earth.

For fans of The Expanse™, you also have an opportunity to add some elements from the story to the game. And if this goes well, well, you may see more worlds to colonise in the future.

MightyTyrano,
It’s kinda good but little more complicated
Well I really do like how the game is payed out to take over hexes and fight. I love how it’s allowing space takeover. Just that I don’t know what to do at all I mean I know the basic to attack by clicking on hexes and placing the hexes to take over others. As I didn’t intend to download or buy this game. I wanted to look at the game as I accidentally did my finger print and downloaded and used my money to buy this game. I wanted the game but didn’t look if it was free which was stupid of me. But the game might be good if it had a more intended tutorial and a more practice based selection for practicing how to do things. It might be good but it’s kinda a just gonna be sitting in my storage until I finally declare to delete it still figuring it out. Good luck everyone with the game. This game definitely don’t fit me.
Caleb Boutell,
I Like Where Their Head Is At
This game has a simple and fascinating concept with a unique puzzle design and a seemingly endless playtime for planetary domination. This game is close to being 5 stars, and I would highly recommend this to all my friends if not for a few in game nuances. There could be some more explanation for things that happen in the game that would be nice. The player is told if a tile is locked or too heavily populated, but the player does not know how long until the tile will be available again. The scoreboard and leaderboard are good trackers, but it’s vague, and doesn’t show things like how many players are on each team or how many tiles each person has taken. This is still a fun game, and great way to fill time, but it feels more like a single player campaign for domination than a multiplayer team game that could feel more immersive. I’m sure there are other things to be fixed, and it’s isn’t easy, but I think this game could be much better with a few tweaks, and it would pay off.
Math Parent,
I love this game
I have played this game for a long enough time to have seen continents change colors as they are conquered by different factions. It is a great strategy game and the expansion to other planets made it even better.
MasterBaker19,
Just bought this game...
Just bought this game for the first time and as soon as i open it up, it gives me a quick loading screen and then gives the message “unable to load your user record. Please try again later” i have closed out the app and tried multiple times to open it with the same result. It shows me the Earth and i can spin it around and look at it and zoom in, but there is nothing to interact with. Please help! It looks like a promising game.
Mohammed Sanchez,
Need Help
Says it’s compatible with my iPad but every time I get to the point where I have to upload a nickname and press enter it crashes.
Gentle Fella,
Excellent game
Took a moment to acquaint myself with the type of strategy, but once discovered, quite enjoyable...

If only someone could create a mobile version to Gloomhaven or Firefly...hmmm
monikayuuk,
