REVIEWS

“it works surprisingly well on touchscreens”
- Pocket Gamer

“As you would expect from DotEmu, this port is basically perfect from a technical standpoint. […] The actual gameplay is generally intact, however, and that means Ys Chronicles 1 is a must-have for any mobile RPG fan. It's a sheer joy to play, full of a kind of upbeat excitement that doesn't come around all that often. ”

Ys is an action-packed, heroic fantasy JRPG game that immerses you in a beautiful Japanese artistic universe. Originally released on PC and PSP in the 2000s, this remake of the famous franchise’s first episode, titled " Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen", returns in a mobile version especially adapted for touch gameplay.

In Ys, you play as Adol Christin, an adventurous young swordsman. Early in the story, you find yourself on a mysterious beach in Esteria, a kingdom whose cities are besieged by hordes of demoniac creatures. Esteria’s people are depending on you to defeat the demons and free the kingdom. To accomplish your goal, you must find six sacred books containing the history of the ancient land of Ys; books which will also provide you with the knowledge to restore peace. Throughout the game, you’ll gain experience and strength by discovering enchanted weapons and artifacts. Become a mighty knight and destroy your enemies!

Ys possesses a rich and poetic atmosphere with beautiful artistic direction, an incredible soundtrack and a deep story. Ys also stands out thanks to its unique fight mode: you must pounce on enemies to attack them ("BUMP" system). Perfectly adapted to touch devices, this one-touch combat system makes the game even more exciting and enjoyable.

syntheticvoid,
Ys Chronicles 1
I wasn't really sure what to expect when I purchased this. The only reason I did is because Chronicles 2 was released and my RPG friends have been pushing me to get into Ys for years now... and this happened to be on sale. It is kinda strange that it took me this long to grab it, as I love all of DotEmu's ports, but around the time it came to the AppStore, I was falling out of RPGs and getting more into Roguelikes and Tactical RPGs. Anyway, once you get the whole 'bumping' attack mechanics down (I'd recommend watching a few YT vids if you're having trouble - I also clicked with it more when I removed the Free movement and set it at 8 directions), the game really seems to open up (while still remaining streamlined for an RPG) - and it's carried over fantastically into the awesome boss fights. Yes, it's short - for an RPG - around 10 hours - but that's kind of what finally made me buy the game (aside from the sale) - knowing I'll be able to play and beat the game within a week instead of dumping months of my life into yet another game. Anyway, I recommend this one... it's great.
EthanEfun,
Very well done
Usually porting retro games to iOS is a waste of time. Very few control well with a touch interface. I've been disappointed on more than one occasion, but this game actually controls really well on my iPhone! I've been enjoying ys 1 very much and I honestly recommend this to any retro gaming fans on the go.
Gewinn,
Not on iOS, never
Love Ys, despise these kinds of ports and this game in particular. This game is great on the platform it was originally formatted for (ones with directional pads and buttons), on iOS you have to drag your finger around the screen and/or mash parts of said all the while trying not to completely obliterate you field of view (which is both insanely easy to do and will likely result in getting murdered by bosses over and over again (to the point of rage)).

Summary, this game should of been left to the PSP, the shameless cash grab that is the mobile port is garbage.
CPNTattoo,
Bugs
I have encountered the, "door fails to open after killing boss mumber 1" bug, so incapable of moving forward. Great game, seeming to be a terrible port.

*EDIT*
To fix this bug you have to save your game, then force close the app and restart.
Norm without the N,
Great game ruined by poor QA
I played this way back on the old TurboGraphics 16. I'd been wanting to play it again and figured what they hell it on iOS. Whoever ported this didn't even try to rebalance it for mobile. On Normal difficulty, some of the bosses are nearly impossible and the end boss is just ridiculous. I remember what the game was like originally and this version needs some serious work. Don't buy unless you like frustration. Otherwise it's great. Sad they totally messed up the game by not bothering to balance the bosses as per the new controls.
Mjust5612,
Okay game
The good: kinda like a Zelda game, nice storyline, and fun to play.
The bad: the direction button is awful( won’t let you go to where you want to go freely, had to keep forcing it, feels like a broken joy stick from them arcade days). Dungeon shouldn’t have a level restriction, don’t like to grind to reach the level before I can go in a dungeon, bored me out.
3 stars for effort. Hopefully these issues are address on part 2.
Fellcaster,
A fun struggle
Game is enjoyable and fun until you get to the boss in the abandoned mines. Then you have to end it there. Poor controls and a terrible mechanic make it impossible to win. I’ve spent an hour trying to kill this thing. Max level, all silver equipment, oh and the one time I might actually want to use a healing potion, I can’t. Cool game, too bad this boss is terrible and the controls are basically beyond useless.
Jon9904,
Fantastic classic RPG
The first time I played this was back on the turbografx. I loved it back then and its every bit as enjoyable on iOS. I miss the voiceover work, but it still works. If you've never played an YS game, this is a great place to start. Go grab it.
Toast102947,
Great game
I've never Played YS on any other system, but I've heard about it before and I've always wanted to try it. It's a lot of fun so far. No disappointed.
Dmitheon2,
Solid port
Solid port of the remastered Ys. Music is beautiful as always in and Ys game. No voices though which felt like a step backward after having them in the Turbografx-CD version.
