Today, when academics are being faced with the loss of control over their intellectual property, at a time when faculty have no collective bargaining power, and ruinous technology transfer requirements are built into tenure-track contracts, the only way to ensure independence from being used as idea-horse to further the financial enrichment of corrupt university interests (predatory administrators who do not fulfill their obligation to guard the independence of basic research) only wide-ranging and free-access dissemination of new ideas, that must be tested in the public realm by the widest possible critical audience, we depend on applications like this one to keep freedom alive. And to drive the next generation of independent researchers. Universities were created to protect and promote basic research! Not to make cash-cows out of out best and most brilliant! Keep publishing freely and independently to fulfill the promise to mankind that science makes to respect but not to obey the Popes, and kings, and voracious Provost's. We pay you to protect us! We ARE science! Remember. The next auto-da-fe will have your name on it.

I love this app, it is amazing and very resourceful when finding things that you will not normally find in a google search engine,i find things that i been looking for a very long time and ever since last year i have learned so much, i would renew my subscription and pay 200$ a year if i had too,Academia is a app that is neccessary in my life, it is something that makes research what it should be,accessible to all who seek and want to know things,learning is what i never get tired of and knowledge is power...

Although the service itself is excellent, the app itself is problematic in terms of ableist assumptions. Zooming in can only be accomplished in portrait mode; in landscape mode one is stuck with whatever zoom level one has in portrait mode. As most phones are rectangular, this means it is impossible to get the text to fit the screen in landscape mode without repeatedly switching into portrait mode and zooming in and out until one happens upon the proper fit. Additionally, it is impossible to scroll with your left hand in landscape mode; scroll functionality is limited to the right side of the screen. This makes the app virtually unusable by academics who happen to be left-handed or are otherwise limited in range of motion movements. Such lack of accessibility on a platform which aims to improve access to research and academic information is a barrier to those who fail to occupy the societally established hierarchy of “right handed” and “able bodied.”

I would give the app one star if it weren’t such a stellar service otherwise. Very disappointed with their subpar programming, lack of accessibility, and ableist GUI design.

Navigation is far more difficult than it needs to be. The app’s promise of sharing intellectual activities is exhilarating, but entering search terms is a total frustration. I am sure you could vastly improve the means of locating and preserving articles and chapters, as well as the ways of communicating with others. I feel as though I am only enjoying a modicum of information and exchange on your app. That is highly discouraging. I suspect, based on my admittedly limited experience, you may well be losing the very interested scholars you are hoping to serve and you undercutting the project of building a vibrant academic, intellectual community. Why is it impossible to use Apple to enter the App, if you go past a week?? That’s crazy. What purpose does it serve except to gate people out. This is just one example of the obstructions/annoyances I have run into while on Academia. I wish you the best in your endeavors to be more accessible to your users. I’ve used academia for a good few months now and have enjoyed it. However, recently, I’ve run into a key issue that pretty much hamstrings it. Any time I try to actually read an article, the article’s text simply doesn’t load. The “About” and “Related” sections load near instantly, but the “Read” section, the actual text of the article I’m wanting to use, never does. I could understand if it were a matter of these articles being paywalled like some results on the app are (even if I find paywalling content when features are already paywalled disagreeable, but that’s a minor issue), but there’s no prompt alerting me to needing to be a premium member or the like, just an infinite loading screen. This says nothing of the hard crashes caused by going to specific papers from the links Academia will periodically email to me. Academia is still useful for keeping track of particular scholars and publications in my field, but right now, it’s useless for what I actually want to use it for: reading the articles that it helps me to find.

This is not an overall review; I find this app generally to be useful and interesting. But I can’t figure out why the “mentions” feature is so primitive. I am quite curious about mentions of my publications, but for some reason the system seems to only scan for “C Laughlin,” and does not learn from my hundreds of responses to “this is me/this is not me,” even that I am not named McLaughlin (some materials apparently come in with a space between the “c” and the “L”), and it even captures references in which the “C” and the “Laughlin” are not part of the same person’s name! Not to mention the other Charles Laughlins in other fields like sports medicine, anthropology, physics, biology, and education, some of whom were publishing books and articles when I was in elementary school. At least the algorithm should capture only “Charles Laughlins,” and only ones who began publishing in the late 1990s about Chinese literature and culture, without me having to pick through over 90% false hits.

Thank you so very much for your insights on many subjects. I’m hoping to learn more from scholars to heal a soul,(mine), from much useless sufferings I now feel I must find peace with. Many people are suffering from past trauma and discovering this App, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to allow Biblical teachings from others to help heal the wounds that only The Living Christ has the power to bring about a new life worth living. Wading through a stack of books on an array of topics to find the information needed for my own research is time-consuming at best, discouraging at worst. Academia has provided me with scholarly articles that encapsulate the key themes and facts in a succinct, yet well-documented, medium. I initially used the free version, but soon purchased the yearly subscription. I rarely write reviews, but I felt compelled to recommend Academia. I have been able to locate and use research articles I couldn’t have accessed anywhere else. 5 stars!

Seems like a great app if it would let me use it, but I’ll never know because it’s impossible to open, and because I’m going to throw my phone into outer space from the ungodly rage strength this experience has given me. 0/10 with rice.

Using latest version with iOS 13.5.1. I downloaded this app recently and created an account using Apple ID. Worked fine at first until the newer update was released. Now I can’t get past the login screen. I don’t even get an error message to give me any kind of clue what is going on. Will have to go on the desktop version and manually save all of the papers I was using for research to Adobe Acrobat. No point in keeping this app on my phone. I can try to update to 13.6 but really not happy since it worked ok before update, aside from the constant pop ups and pay walls others have complained of. Would not recommend. You’re better off using Google and Acrobat for finding and organizing papers.
