Description

With APT you can transmit and receive images acoustically. To do this each column of the selected gets transformed by a Fast Fourier Transform and outputed through iPhones speaker. On the receiving iOS-device the received audio is visualized by a spectrogram and the incoming images get visible. You can use this app for example to transmit images very easily over a phone or to put images in every kind of audio recording.

The pro-version has the additional features of choosing between two coding methods, choosing between linear and logarithmic frequency scale and the ability of sending the resulting audio as email. Also, the pro-version isn't ad-supported.

ArnPoe,
Can you add more features?
This app is AWESOME! I used to have to do this on my desktop, cutting, pasting, and converting files through several pieces of software.

It would be helpful if the app had a few additional features:
1. The option to import an image OR view live sound (the microphone). Right now, it picks up background noise (coughing, cars driving by), which adds unwanted frequencies to the generated sound.
2. The option to output the audio file in different formats (m4a, mp3, WAV). I know different compression algorithms would also change the image, but having a smaller file size would help me email these to myself.

If you could add even more features, it would be even better!
3. The ability to raise or lower the threshold/Hz/limit of the sound so the image could be taller/shorter. Right now some images get stretched strangely.
4. The option to share the output audio file to a different app, rather than only mailing it.

Thank you, again, for creating this!
DrChasC,
This app is of high quality and has amazing uses!
I fell in love with it when I first downloaded the free version. The free version is very useful, but this is one of those rare apps that I liked so much I bought the pro version. It adds emailing the sound file to any computer among other things. A major update added features and works great with iPhone 6+ / iOS 8.2. I love how true the images are to their originals, even in less-than-perfect conditions at lower sample rates, like those used in a telephone. The linear/logarithmic switch actually changes how the picture is transmitted and helps emphasize the high (harder to receive) frequencies and hence detail. The possibilities are limitless to be able to send pictures by sound--put it in music--disguise (conceal) it with the "noise" feature (great for a short message or symbol). The moving spectrogram is pretty awesome, as birds, whistles, cats and everyday sounds reveal distinct images (which you can save). This app is sophisticated and unique. Kudos to the programmer! A+
Zwerlie,
Very unique!
A very cool and unique app. I've never seen anything else like it. If you're looking for something to do absolutely crazy things with photos and images, this is your app. (On the other hand if you're looking for a regular app to transfer photos between phones this is not it!) You can interject and all sorts of your own sounds while the image is being transmitted to deform it quite nicely. Shout, sing, play the radio, go to a crowded public place and try it. The resulting images are one of a kind.

You can try the free version first to see if you like it.

Warning: this app is totally useless to anyone looking to do high quality "normal" photography. If that's you, stay away. With an app this brilliant and distinctive, the last thing they need is one star reviews because somebody thought it was something it wasn't.
lofidelityrockr,
A hidden jewel of an app.
I really hope this app still has support. I don’t know if there are any others out there like this. I especially like the frequency selection so I don’t blow ears out. But I have some cool ideas for this. I’ve been messing around with a lot of random sounds to just to see what comes out of it.
AT0MCHILD,
Just what I was looking for.
I've imagined doing exactly what this app does since way back before cell phones existed. I imagined people sending secret messages by visualizing, through using little handheld fft devices. When texting came out I figured it obsolete. But here it has come to life! This is a dream come to life, man! Props.
DRPHiL90,
Please update this amazing app
This app is Amazing. Please, please update it. Such a wonderful tool should come standard with computers and phones. Sharing files crashes the app, and the ability to switch between portrait and landscape would be a wonderful addition.
Patrcain,
It’s 1963 again!!!
This technology was used by NASAs satellites to transmit images, taken in space, back to earth.
The principle behind that system is used in this phone app. Very cool. I now use it to broadcast images through my radio set to radio listeners across the country! Fun fun!
Stevenrs,
Impressive technology demonstration
I write very, very few reviews. This app is one of the most visually impressive demonstrations of how data can be transmitted wirelessly I have ever seen. My professor used it in my engineering seminar to great effect.
Dr. Charles Cavanaugh,
Amazing and works great!
It is uncanny how good the image quality is, and a little bit eerie, although highly scientific in actuality.
picolinortiz,
This app broke since last update
My cam won’t open up and the mic doesn’t pick up the transmission. Please fix. I’ve had this app since my iphone3gs and have bought it 3 times . Works well on my legacy devices. This device is a 6s plus.
