Classic Graphics + Innovative Design = Solid Game!
I’m not normally one for horror stories, but Ailment stood out to me because this feels like Pixel Starships (different app game but also in space) but in a FPS narrative. This game might sound a little too good to be true, but that’s because its marketing mechanic is the first I’ve seen (at least). In the game, you can certainly get weapons/heal as the story progresses. However where Ailment diverts from most games is that it doesn’t force ads on you; instead it GIVES you the choice to get in-game currency / 200pt / revives via watching ads, in ADDITION to using real currency for game perks. I just started the game, but the storytelling merges with the game design JUST enough to keep it small and intimate for your storage but also keeping that balance of keeping the player (us) interested.
I think this game achieves a good balance between keeping the users entertained and supporting the creator(s) of the game. If anything~ regardless of what game mode you end up playing with, Ailment seeks to include YOU instead of just holding your hand through powerups. Which is rare because ALL the details makes it easy and fun to think about all the intricacies of the game.

Enraptured and Thoroughly Enamored
As a casual player of games I don’t really find too many things to keep me interested for so long, but ailment is definitely one of them! I can tell a lot of work was put into the game and it pays off!! Contrary to what other people say I think the amount of damage and quick deaths add to how interesting a game is. There can never be the right amount of damage in a situation and the fact that you have to add strategy towards your attacks due to fearing death (instead of strolling in guns blazing) keeps me and many others interested! Also, I really like that ailment goes on an add or point based health recovery system rather than a time based one because with time based ones I get bored fast and click off to wait! This makes it really fast and easy!!!! Overall I really appreciate the game and how much effort was put into it despite it being free+!!!!! Thank you so much! ❤️❤️
Psps: I find the art style and characters/story line very endearing!!🚀
GmatterG,
Good potential
Played when first released, tried again and recall why I stopped before. Maybe not an issue on tablets, but on phone, the dialogue obscures the screen and while I appreciate the attention to story, for me, I’d disable text if I could. Another annoyance are the doors constantly opening and closing. Perhaps it’s hearing the same annoying sound effect, hundreds and hundreds of times, but either the delay should be longer or the doors should remain open until they are off screen. Another annoying issue is container interaction where UI doesn’t always display interaction icon, and while you can still interact, you also fire weapon and unnecessarily waste ammo/durability. I assume this is due to nearby enemies. Lastly, the level designs can be tedious: “go way over there to unlock a door right here and do that a half dozen times per level and traverse previously explored areas to return to said door”. This would not be so annoying if it were not the standard level design approach. Harsh critique but there is too much potential here to not mention what’s holding it back.
dippindeep,
Yo Ivan I dig your styles
Hey Ivan,
I very much enjoy Ailment, and I think you can do a lot with a multiplayer option for your creative styles. Also, I tried to email you through the game but I’m not sure I sent it to the right place. Actually, to have a team of other real players or a partner with you,(like if my wife and I could smash through a dungeon together!!!!) having to work together to do many of the tasks, (certain tasks can only be done by the other player or only with 2 players) and to keep each other alive and revive each other, trade weapons and resources!!!!
I think it could be a great idea, even if you do only single player modes, just keep up YOUR good work Ivan!!!!
Take care,
Tai.
Braydogg1,
Not bad for a solo developer
So, the game overall isn’t bad! The controls are easy and pretty smooth. The game is interesting and makes you want to continue playing. I love the old bit graphics, very nostalgic while still being modern. Obviously there’s the money factor. Nobody expects everything for free. It’s nice though that you can repeatedly revive by a simple ad here and there.
The story text for the character gets in the way a bit sometimes and the doors opening and closing on a timer instead of proximity is a little frustrating when you’re stuck in a fight and have to wait for the door to pop open. Also, not a fan of the whole “guns break/run out.” It would be cooler if it were like Metroid where guns are rechargeable at like the gun station where you can buy guns/health. Other than that, like I said, not too bad for a solo developer. Good job Ivan!
minnieleebee,
One small glitch
I really liked this game and played all the way through to the end (which is saying something). I like the pixel style- I’m old school and fancy new games are way too overstimulating. I liked that I used ads to get health points but only when I chose to go that route (as opposed to ads being forced into the game). I liked the length and the premise. Solid game. Would recommend.

The only small thing is that sometimes you can shoot a guy *out of the map* but the guy will still be shooting at you from behind the map walls. That’s fine except that it can prevent you from being able to open boxes and lockers for health and guns or engage computers to unlock doors. With a little creative maneuvering, you can still figure it out but I’d have given this game a 5 star review but for this glitch.
PatrickEverson,
Seems fun and interesting, controller support is very weird
Been mostly having fun playing the game but there are definitely a few items that need ironing out. 1. The controller support is off. I’m using an Xbox controller and L1 is pause and the shoot button is the left d-pad arrow which is right under the joystick you need to move so your two hands make a claw around the left side of the controller. Remap the buttons to something that makes sense and it will work great! 2. The dialogue timing seems off, however it’s being triggered I often see the text too early, or too late after I’m already done a given task. Just seems tied to the wrong triggers. Overall though this seems like a fun gam that just needs some polishing. Great job devs!

Update: Dev is clearly working hard on controller support. Best of luck getting it to work!
Jonharvey22,
Fun
Great time playing this so far, ad watching for guns to play it free makes it enticing, and I might be inclined to support the devs for this good work. My only hangups are the weapons interface. Occasionally the lockers/boxes don't show what it is I'm picking up, and I have to go away and come back to reprompt it, and I'm also not sure how to swap out guns with low durability when I come across it brand new. Otherwise it's quite fun. The story could be easier to read as sometimes the text floats over other texts and becomes illegible, but I'm a fan of a good story and I don't know if anyone else is. All in all its amazing for free! So many poorly done free games that barely let you enjoy it before hitting a paywall. Hats off
Eightbitgoddess,
Pixel Greatness!
I have played this game for several months now off and on. I loved it from the first moment I downloaded it. I love the concept, the art, everything. I had a few minor bug complaints initially, but those have been fixed since then. I know a lot of players whined about the difficulty, but I love a good hard game! However, I do think that adding the difficulty levels does helps the game cater to a broader audience.

I like that the controls are simple and easy to use so you can pick it up and play without issue. I enjoy the quick pace of the combat and the variety of weapons.

Overall, this game is fun and challenging and it’s an awesome addition to your mobile gaming library!
Duckhands,
Fun and challenging
This game is pretty awesome for passing time, and reminds me of a game I thought about developing a few years ago. The only thing I hope to see in the second game is the implementation of a platformer style game play. The thing I had in mind would be that as you play through the game every once in a while you hit a portal that takes you to a platformer style level, similar to classic games from the snes, such as contra, or Metroid. Then once you beat the platform, you gain a power up and continue. I was going to email Ivan directly when the message popped up about emailing him about weather or not to make the next game paid, but I had no internet at the time.
