Description

Alphabear 2 is an original English word puzzle game by Spry Fox, and the sequel to our hit 2015 game!

In Alphabear 2, you spell words by selecting letters on a puzzle grid. When you use letters that are adjacent to each other, bears appear! The more letters you use, the bigger the bear gets, and the more points you earn. Spelling words cleverly is the key to success!

Collect Bears:

When you solve the puzzles, you'll earn new bears for your permanent collection. These bears can team up to help you in future games! They increase the points you earn, extend your timer, modify the game board, and more.

Bear humor:

Fans of the original Alphabear will appreciate the much-improved "bear speech" -- the words you spell will appear in funny cartoons like always, but the all-new templates come with a huge variety of backgrounds and amusing props.

Built-in dictionary:

Lastly, a smart dictionary and other new features make Alphabear 2 a great way to improve your English and have fun while doing it!

So what are you waiting for? The best word puzzle game of 2018 awaits! :-)

(v1.4.4 has fixes, including an issue where some players were incorrectly asked to update their game)

v1.4 is a major update, featuring all new TOURNAMENTS! (Note: you need to unlock the "Special Event" node to be able to access them.) So what does all this entail?
- The first phase of every tournament starts each Monday at 12:01am EST and runs for 24 hours.
- To qualify for the next phase of the tournament, your score must be high enough to put you in the top 50% of all players. (This percentage will be even smaller in the next phase!)
- If you can manage to reach the fourth and final phase of the tournament, which takes place on Thursday, you'll get major bragging rights as well as a big prize! (In general, each phase of the tournament gives much bigger rewards than the phase that came before it.)

And speaking of rewards, this update includes five new bears - three epic and two legendary - that can ONLY be won by playing in the tournament! The way this works: with each tournament phase that you complete, you'll earn tokens for the five new bears. It takes 100 tokens to unlock the epic bears and 200 tokens to unlock the legendary bears. Play well for several weeks and you'll eventually unlock them all!

The first time you play the tournament, you'll be able to pick a unique username that shows up on a leaderboard. Hopefully you'll be seeing yourself near the top of that leaderboard soon. ;)

We hope you enjoy this major new feature! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]

Minor bugfixes and improvements
01.03.00
2018-10-15
This update includes a bunch of quality-of-life improvements based on your feedback!

- If you lose an event, you'll now get a consolation prize of honey and/or berries!

- The "no ads" (renamed "ultimate") bundle now includes an increase in your maximum honey amount from 100 to 150, and speeds up honey regeneration time by +10%, in addition to its other benefits! If you've already purchased the bundle, you get this retroactively.

- Depressed letter tiles are now darker and deeper to make them easier to distinguish from unchosen letter tiles.

- More reliable warnings when you're not prepared for an event and need to level up your bears more.

- Coins have been changed to a silver color, to reduce the likelihood that people confuse them with honey.

- The requirements for all tiers of a special event are now displayed, even when the tiers are locked, so you can see everything you'll need to finish the event.

- Tea Bear is now correctly tagged as a "drink" type of bear

- Fixed some balance issues that were causing daily events to have unreasonably high score targets for a small number of players

- The final level requirements for epic special events have been slightly reduced

- When checking the "bear requirements" for a special event, bears of yours that already meet the level requirement are marked with a green checkmark

- Other bugfixes

Thank you as always for your helpful feedback and kind words. We are so grateful! :-)

-Special events have arrived! Every Thursday and Friday we'll have special events that you can play to eventually earn unique epic and legendary bears. These events have multiple tiers of difficulty, each with their own requirements. Level up your bears to complete them all!
- This Tuesday, we'll also kick off the new "Honey Pot" special event, which awards coins, cloth and a whole bunch of honey. It'll be back in the future, too. :-)
- We've redesigned the in-game store to make all purchase options easier to find
- Loads more bugfixes, as usual
1.1.0
2018-09-20
- We've added three clocks to Daily Events. Two of the clocks will help you level up a variety of themed bears in your collection, which miiiiight be useful when we unveil Special Events in the near future. ;-)
- The third clock is a funny thing that's stuck in a time loop, and can be repaired an infinite number of times per day! (Those of you who manage to play every daily and school event and STILL have honey left over - this is for you.)
- We fixed a bunch of bugs
- We prepared under-the-covers for the upcoming release of Special Events

Thank you everyone for your kindness and support in these first couple of weeks after worldwide launch! We love you.

* Alphabear 2's UI and narrative has been localized into French, Spanish, German and Russian! (Note that the core game is still about spelling English words and learning English vocabulary.)

* You can now see the score target in most campaign maps

* Many players have complained about the end game sequence feeling too long and/or not liking how it speeds up when you tap anywhere on the screen. So what we've done is remove the speed-up, and instead, enabled you to tap a button to just skip parts of the end game sequence entirely. Mash that button if you want to fly through it quickly.

* TV Time now also awards 5 coins instantly the first time each day that you use it. If you've purchased no-ads, you'll get this bonus automatically each day that you play the game. :-)

* Lots of bugfixes and polish in general.

Thank you everyone for your feedback thus far on this beta version of the game! It has been helpful and appreciated.

Jacian,
Incredible
This is one of the most highly polished and feature rich games on the iOS store. This game is free, which is ridiculous as there’s no intrusive ads or forced video watching. Instead they gamify the ad experience with some hilariously meta commentary that has me actually watching ads because I want to contribute to “TV time!” I’m going to “purchase” this game (disabling ads is a little steep at $9.99) but I want to really help this developer be successful. It’s great to learn new words too, which this game has helped me do.

The only negative I’ve found so far is that with someone who has a larger (more verbose!) vocabulary, the game doesn’t really reward you for going way above the required score at the beginning. I’ll sometimes end up with a few thousand points over the limit and a fully completed tile (the largest “biggest bear award”) but I don’t really get rewarded for it aside from some cloth. Would be nice to have the game acknowledge more power players in the early stages and perhaps unlock the medium and difficult modes a little earlier (I’m still on easy as I haven’t progressed to the later chapters yet despite nearly always acing each stage).

Aside from that—this is one of the best and most polished apps on the iOS store and I'm very happy to support it!
Mye Opinionne,
Great Game
This is an amazing game with great graphics and a fun story to keep you just interested enough to play but not enough to be a problem or get in the way of the gameplay. The unique bears, tv time function, rechargeable honey, and special events add a little something that other games don’t have. I’ve only gotten one or two intrusive ads in the month or so I’ve been playing this game. I’m just wondering if you could have a feature to make your own levels or bears that can be unlocked by helping people out by, say, sending them honey. You could friend people and send gifts to earn custom bears. Or maybe there’s a different currency, say, candies, and you can pay a certain amount of candies to make a custom bear. Then you have different levels of items and accessories and powers. Common level stuff is free but rare, epic, and legendary bears cost candies. You can earn candies through tournaments and by competing with your friends. Overall I love the game, so do my friends and family, and I can’t wait to see what the developers have in store!

Buyers Remorse
Like all of the iPhone games I’ve played, this game has pros and cons. The early levels are fun and I got pretty far over several months without spending money. I’m currently on Chapter 8 Normal and Level 3 Hard, and I’m stuck again. I’ve read the doc about advancing the campaign and I already do the suggested activities. However, it seems that once you’ve gotten to higher Bear levels, around 30-40, then it’s very difficult to advance. The cost in real $$ of coffees to level a bear up a tiny bit is insanely high, so many days all I do is level up bears while I’m stuck in the Story Mode. I do the Daily Events too but that usually just levels up useless bears (by a tiny bit). I can’t do well on Tournaments, even though I completely clear the board, apparently because I don’t have the right bears that earn enough points per 4 letter word (Alphabear stacked with Doc bear according to its Wiki). And I’ve been wanting the darn Doughnut bear, so finally shelled out real, hard earned $$ out of desperation. Close but not enough so like a fool I kept spending more - $30!!! And I still didn’t get the Doughnut bear. You’re also stuck in Special Events without that bear so I can wait five weeks then shell out another $30 to maybe get it. I’m debating just deleting the whole game in disgust.

My New Favorite Game
I’ve played this game every day since I got it. It’s a lot of fun and, since I love word games, it easily keeps my attention. I love the graphics and the fact that I can customize my bear (she’s currently impersonating Lady Gaga by wearing a meat dress). I also enjoy challenging myself to make bigger and better words. I personally don’t like the timed challenges because I like taking all the time I want to make the best words I can, but that isn’t the developers fault - and I do feel accomplished when I beat one of those levels. I think the rewards for beating each board are fair and make it worth it to continue playing. I especially love the “Mad Libs” style quotes at the end of each board and I collect the funniest ones to post on my Facebook as an Alphabears QOTD. I have spent a few dollars on the game to both get rid of ads and for coins to get better bears and I consider both good buys. Many thanks to the developer for making this game!
Uchusky99,
Good-but need options for more honey
I am glad they came out with a new version as I liked the original and was disappointed when it ended. A few things I would change are the inability to fast forward through the storyline parts. They can be quite long if you don’t really care about time traveling bears. Also, you can buy coins to boost your bears, but there is no way seemingly to buy honey to play games when you run out? You are capped at how many ads you can watch for honey, so you are limited as to how much you can play-even if you are willing to pay. If you played through the last version, you won’t be challenged very much at the first few chapters. I am on chapter 3 and have yet to not win on my first try-but I am reminding myself of strategy, saving boosts and upping my bears for the more challenging levels I know are ahead.
Fashaezzle,
Stopped playing at level 4 👎🏻
I much preferred the first Alphabears game. What annoys me about this second one and why I stopped playing it is that they disallow you from bingeing on the game. You can kind of binge for the first few levels, but they’ve created ways to slow and stop your progress starting at level 4 so it takes much longer for you to get through it. It’s probably a financial reason, so they get more longevity (ad views and such) out of each player or something like that. But I went from super excited to frustrated to “meh, never mind.” I don’t have the desire to check in on a game daily for months so I can play the few boards they dole out that day. I even looked at purchasing the game ($10 ain’t cheap) but you still can’t binge—no infinite honey. So why the heck would I buy the game??? I’ll be honest, I’m bummed—I was looking forward to this. But I’ve deleted it off my phone and iPad because it feels like an obligation—one more task I have to do for the day. And when I do want to sit down and do something mindless for a few hours, I get to play a handful of boards and I’m forced to be done. Lame. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
AndreaKG,
Fun game but too many currencies
This game is fun but it has too many in-game currencies. I dislike the reason posted on the website about removing infinite honey for the players health. Nonsense. What would be great for our health is to not be encouraged to waste real money on digital coins, coffees, and cloth packs.

I am happy to pay for a good game and did pay to remove ads. I will not be paying more money for various bear goods and wish there was an option to hide the shop and turn off time-limited deal pop-ups.

Otherwise, the game is fun to play. The bears are very cute. The addition of the dictionary in this version is great. I love learning what words mean. There are occasions where valid words are restricted (usually “bad” words). Sometimes there words that are valid but don’t feel like they should be (“uey” and proper nouns like “Noah”). Some sources don’t seem reputable but this may be down to API costs. I imagine Oxford Dictionary costs more to access than Wordnik. If there was an option to choose a source I’d gladly pay for it.
Squinte,
Best word game I’ve played
This is a smart, sweet spin on word games. Addictive, but not so addictive that you neglect the other parts of your life. I even sometimes use it to practice phonetic spelling with my 5-year old, who loves dressing up the cute little bears. Even though this is the best word game I’ve ever played, for Alphabear 3, it might be nice to have a little less grinding to level up bears for the later levels, and for there to be more later levels that go up in difficulty more slowly—the game loses some of its fun when you get stuck in one place for several days or a week. Also, I’m sometimes tempted to stay up until midnight to get honey lol. I’d say this is a huge improvement over the original Alphabear, which was great fun, and I look forward to being inspired and entertained by the Spry Fox team for a long time!
a cactus probably,
Love this game!
I used to play the original Alphabear years ago, and recently thought of it again and found Alphabear 2. I love playing this game; ideally, I would play for hours straight. The only thing that I don’t like about this game is that there’s a cap on how many ads you can watch to get extra energy per day. I would gladly watch more ads in order to keep playing. I’m not a big fan of the fact that there’s energy to use to play in the first place, but since it does promote the game-player to watch ads or buy energy, I get that it helps fund the game. I just wish there wasn’t a cap, that’s literally the only downside—I can’t wait for the energy to refill on its own. OTL Outside of that, fantastic game! Such a cute style, enjoyable to play, never had any glitches or other issues. Love it.
potokat,
“Big Water”
I don’t frequently write reviews, but after I finished the first stop on level 3 and fell over giggling at the text, I decided I had to.
The first Alpha Bear game is fun; it’s one of the few I keep on my phone when the mood to play a word game strikes. However, it can’t hold a candle to this version. Spry Fox did a great job fleshing out various aspects to the game, such as the game board, the clothing feature, and the ways you can collect new bears. Those are, of course, icing on the cake of an already fun concept - Bearified Boggle, essentially, but with some hysterically clever text. The ads aren’t even as annoying as you might think they’d be (although I was more than happy to plunk down the coin to get rid of them and support this developer). In short, I am really happy I downloaded this. :)
