REVIEWS

"[I] know strong bg play when I see it. This app is the strongest iPhone bg app I've played with by far. It does not cheat period. ...Analyzing these matches with eXtreme Gammon confirms a world class level of play with normal luck factors. If you are losing, get over it. So would 99.9% of the other backgammon players in the world. It is just that good. Learn from it." -Richard Munitz, Giant of Backgammon, #21 world ranking in 2009

"Backgammon NJ plays at an extremely high level with an excellent interface, and I often use it to practice on my iPhone when I am traveling. I recommend it highly to my students and friends." -Phil Simborg, Professional Backgammon Teacher and Player, www.mindgamescenter.com

"I've played over 500 games now; I've checked about 5% of these against World Class Desktop programs (GNU, BGBlitz); and I've actually used some of the competition. NJ has the best interface and has more useful functions than any other backgammon apps out there."

"For serious backgammon players, Backgammon NJ is the way to go." -Macworld.com, May 2012

2.5.3
2011-10-18
Version 2.5:

- Updated for iOS 5
- 180 degree screen rotation in landscape mode
- Option to lock orientation
- Modified difficulty of Easy & Medium skill levels. The new levels are:

* Easy: This level is in between the difficulty of the old Easy and Medium levels from the previous version.
* Medium: This level has been adjusted in difficulty to better reflect a 1500 Elo rating. This level is more difficult than the old Medium level from the previous version.

- In 2-player mode (offline & online with 2 human players), resigning a game with an equity less than or equal to 1.1 will offer to resign a single game instead of a gammon. This will allow players to resign a single game sooner. Previously, the threshold was 1.001, and players could only resign a single game when a gammon was nearly impossible. Now, players can resign when the gammon chance is low. Note: Accepting a resignation offered under these circumstances isn't optimal but can speed the match up.

Version 2.5.1:

- Fixed a graphical bug in the settings window in v2.5

Version 2.5.3:

- Fixed the Play button in the Statistics and Dice Rolls windows for iOS 5

devitre,
Great for practice, but so dishonest that is hurts
Whatever posts you’ll read, this is by far the best backgammon app by far to practice your skills.

However, and that comes with the package, don’t expect to get a fair fighting chance in Expert mode.

The rolls are rigged, yes, and actually designed to keep you up on your toes for the worst possible outcome. You will face a ridiculous amount of 7 rolls and doubles. Just think of it as tough practice.

If you play the computer on manual rolls in Expert Mode, you will see the difference.

The computer obviously can’t look at the upcoming rolls nor can it count on rolling 7 or high doubles. You will notice how less aggressive the computer attacks and how timidly it plays the doubling cube.

The only problem with this app is the dishonesty of its developers. Their so-called AI in Expert mode is a fraud. If they would call it “Worst case” you’d at least have a sense of what you’re up against.

Which is a shame because this is by far the smoothest and most addictive backgammon app on the market.

Why not throw the players a bone and reduce the rage, and the number of times this app has been deleted and reloaded again?

Oliver
pacer1234567,
Rock Solid. Thanks for manual dice mode...
Used to be a fan - not so much anymore. Users' experience is that the game cheats and developers response is that users are not as good as they think. WRONG. Developer ignores the subjective user experience, which is just bad business.

Overall I like the game and have played thousands of games. I think the flaw in AI design is the 4 levels: easy, medium, hard, expert. The only way to pragmatically make these levels appear to act progressively more advanced is to choke or open the competitive advantage granted to the computer (in my opinion). Regardless, the end result is well described by hundreds of users and that is a bias that the game feels as if it has an unrealistic advantage. This can get tiresome. NOTE computer rolls 7s to enter board from bar like crazy. To compete you should avoid being uncovered on 7.

The developer should spend some energy trying to address this common user observation because just as he asserts that his game does not cheat, I would like to assert that all of the users' experiences cannot be dismissed either. So I believe there is room for improvement - but I also imagine it would be a tremendously difficult programming problem to solve.
Bigkidsdad,
Excellent game impossible rolls for computer
Read reviews thought many were sour grapes poor backgammon players but have to say after playing over 3100 games whether I am a horrible backgammon player or not it is impossible for the computer to get “out” as quickly as it does with one opening when my player can be bumped for 5-7 turns with three slots open as often as it does. My win percentage hovers around 35% on expert which is a trigger number for “hope” in most studies for failure. Again I may be a miserable backgammon player but I can tell you the roll the computer will get when I leave an open chip or have computer bumped more then not. Would love to see computer get locked like I do with 50% open slots but after 3100+ games it is not likely to happen. Empirically the game cheats and that is not because I lose but because I have yet to see it run into a stream of bad rolls like I get (and anyone would get if playing a regular game). I have seen the “risk management” arguments and I dismiss them because it is not about losing (I have a friend who pummels me when we play about the same as the computer and I can get him on a bad run of rolls like I get, not the computer). Anyhow it seems by reading the reviews the developer has no interest in “fixing” this so play and enjoy if u can.
PHK1853,
Plays well but unrealistic
I believe that the look and feel of This backgammon app is the best out there. I have read many other reviews and I have noticed that the developer is maniacally defensive about comments that the game is skewed toward the AI. I have to say, though, that after having played literally thousands of games on this app, there is absolutely no doubt that it is skewed toward the AI. Yes, I have a slight winning record but the incredible number of times the AI gets perfect rolls is just ridiculous. There is no risk a human player can make that will go unpunished and no opportunity for the AI that will go unfulfilled. I've also noticed that the game is "streaky". When I realize that the streak is in my favor I know I can make riskier plays, and play more conservatively when the streak is against me. The game has such good motion, appearance, and fluid motion I have been reluctant to give up on it. The time has come, though, where my frustration with the game has superseded the positive attributes. When the developer makes changes in logic to achieve more realistic outcomes I will gladly come back, but for now I am done with this game.
gupta finelli,
Best backgammon game available
The graphics aren’t as snazzy nor are the sound effects as crisp as some other BG games but there is no equal to the uniquely realistic gameplay in BGNJ. The AI is superb, the gameplay is fair. Any reports of “rigging of the dice” is a delusion in the mind of the player. Tutor modes and game analysis allow you to see your errors and really improve your game. Another highlight, the “league” of players is small but highly skilled and devoted. Best of all there is no constant “buy in” for chips or coins. You buy the game once and that’s it. The rest is playing and improving your ER. There is a crashing issue that seems to be a function of Game Center, so says the developer. It’s still the best game out there.

One suggestion: open up the microphone. Then players could talk to each other in real time. Would save typing in the chat window and would make the game very social.
Maxx!,
Overall solid, couple things that bother me a lot
Overall solid app. Turn based multiplayer is great, and helpful but tutorials. I’ve used this app and then deleted it and then came back to it,mostly because of a few smaller things that’d make this really worth the money:
Wish the Animation of checkers was smoother in regular play, pretty abrupt movements right now.
the auto finish I wish it could go slower and respect the same animation so you can actually see how the game finishes (hard to tell what each roll is)
In multiplayer chat, you should be able to send a message after your turn. It’s annoying you can’t type a message after your turn.
Mystery Base,
Satisfied
Unsatisfied that dice rolls are scripted and predetermined. Unrealistic combinations and repeat doublets are a source of consternation. Needs real-time dice rolling algorithm!
After several hundred games I feel I am improving, albeit slowly. Wish there was more strategic guidance or tables of rolls/percentages to reference (though pointless the way dice are implemented here).
Online can be okay though plagued by amateurs doubling at odd times, preoccupied with accumulating match points and not focused on the game in front of them. Some players slow to move or abandon games- should be penalty/forfeit here. Maybe this is implemented, it’s been along while since I played online.
There are good books on the game which detail strategy and risk management. I suggest looking into them and playing on a real board to fully realize what a nice pastime this addictive game can be.
Backgammon Ben,
Not Random Rolls - Computer Gets Too Many Doubles
This game is not random with the rolls of the dice. Every time the computer lands on one of my single pieces, if there are four or fewer empty spots, I will not get one of those numbers. Instead double six, with players on the six, comes up ninety-five percent of the time on the first throw. When I send the computer back by landing on one of it’s single pieces, it always gets the number on the first throw, even if there is only one empty spot. Then, for the computer to win, it will roll doubles as many as four times in a row for itself. The ‘Hints’ are not always good because they sometimes offer bad moves. I have waited for over two years before making a review to see if it improved. It did not. Do not waste your time on this cheating backgammon app. Why is there no backgammon app that has real throws of the dice?
colinsk,
Years in.... (Update) and a few more years in and an am still happy
Patience pays off. After playing this game for years it was finally updated to include game analysis. It shows a list of all the moves in a game and the error level.

Customer support has been great. The game interface has improved a lot in the years since I first got this. I love the analysis list. I do have a request? Can you add a 2 ply mode? I think phones are fast enough now. I have been playing another 2 ply game and I like this interface much better.

Don't let the players who are still learning to play and accuse the game of cheating keep you from improving the AI.
L. Reese,
Looks nice - Totally unfair
There is no way that this game is not skewed towards the AI. The AI gets to start most of the time and gets always the perfect rolls and a unrealistic number of doubles, it is so frustrating. Why would someone make a game like that and insist on that it is fair? No Way is it fair. Can someone please make a fair Backgammon game? Is it so difficult? Luckily I only paid $ 4.99. I guess you get what you pay for.
So now I am getting a response from the developer who again claims the game is fair! Come on! Is this guy reading the reviews? There is absolutely no way this game is fair. The AI knows every move and controls every roll. Once in a while it let's you win or no one would play it anymore. Mr. Hu, I love the layout, the sounds and all that but, could you please make it a fair game?
