Description

Playing Battle Slugs, you take command of a well-trained army of the finest slugs, either green angelic slugs or red devilish slugs (you can decide which, based on what you did last night).

Slug it out across a variety of hexagon-celled playing fields, each with its own sweet spots and bottlenecks, using strategy to claim the most territory and conquer the field. The game includes colorful cartoony graphics, plus changing backgrounds and custom soundtrack music.

Your progress is saved and sent to the Game Center high scores list.

Take on a friend or go up against the cold logic of the CPU on one of three levels of difficulty.

Troy & Thu,
Hard game. Could be fun with some better software
Despite the cartoony feel, this is a serious puzzle game. Don't expect to pick this up and casually plow through levels. I enjoyed the gameplay, and i hope to get better at it.

Now it's not all good. I never had any crashes but it's so slow. Add in some really bad navigation flow and I really felt like I was looking at the loading screen more than I was playing.
Friendly23,
I like difficult games but...
Spent two solid hours on this game yesterday and didn't progress past the first board on the "easy" setting. And I wasn't exactly losing either. I was "beating" the AI by a handy margin nearly every time, but apparently you have to win completely (leave no enemy slugs on the board) to progress to the next board. Look, I love tough puzzle games but the whole point of the ubiquitous three star system in these types of game is to let you make progress without necessarily mastering each and every level. Often a lesson learned on a later level helps you when you go back to play an earlier level.

On top of that you have VERY confusing menu system and multiple long load times the likes of which I have never seen in a game this simple which together make playing the same one level over and over and over again that much more excruciating.

Update: Ok, I just completely beat the first level and the game STILL won't let me play anything other than the first board over and over again. Either there's a game killing bug or the interface is beyond poorly designed, or I am beyond an idiot. If it is a bug, it's the same bug on BOTH my ipod and my ipad.
Linnaly,
Terrific, Challenging Strategy Game
I love Battle Slugs! The cartoony graphics are cute and funny, and the backgrounds are interesting and detailed. The game is challenging - there are 25 playing fields, and three different levels of play (Easy, Medium, Hard) against the AI. It's a challenging strategy game - I just finished the entire Easy mode and unlocked all 25 playing fields, and it was tough. However, I didn't claim 3/3 stars on all the boards, so I'm definitely going back to it, before trying out the Medium/Hard modes. Best of all? There's also a Multiplayer mode.

This is definitely a game with replay value, but I have a couple complaints: 1) If I quit mid-game, my progress isn't saved. 2) Loading times are way too slow for an otherwise polished app. Sometimes I make a bad move, and I'd like to restart the board instead of Surrendering, and then having to go through two slow loading pages before I can relaunch the board.
ktappe,
Other reviews are right--hard & bad UI
I'm like the others who think this very hard from the very first board. It is anything but "Easy" as the screen claims, which seems a bit of unnecessary taunting by the authors. It also seems as though you are guaranteed to lose if you lose the coin toss, which seems a bit unfair.

Meanwhile, the graphics get in the way....this is a lot like Othello and I'd really prefer just simple black and white circles to illustrate my pieces vs. the enemy. I do not need ugly slugs and flashy transitions distracting me from the strategy. It looks like the authors spend a lot of time designing new graphics that I would like an option to turn off. If anyone knows a similar game without all the UI gunk in the way, please post about it, thanks!
Adam Betts,
User interface experience is in need of serious rework
Really want to like this game (art style is fabulous) but the user interface experience is just horrible. Very poorly designed UI flow and It doesn't look/feel responsive. To change a level, you drag up/down (should be left/right for familiarity) and there's no indicator that it changes level that way. In front "menu" (I put quotes on it because for a moment you'd think game is already started,) options button is using "reset/sync" arrows symbol which is very confusing.

You'll get a lot of this feeling "should I tap something to go ahead or is that just game loading/thinking?" You're also never quite sure what to do in game (it doesn't explain clearly on how to get to next level.)

The loading in this game is also more frequent than what is acceptable for a small game.

Ive played over 1,000 iOS games and I've never seen an UIX as bad as this. It's hard to recommend a buy.
mistersimon,
Unstable, poor UI
The good: A truly challenging puzzle game with well drawn illustrations.

The bad: Unable to continue playing because it crashes when loading a scenario. Poor UI results in a feeling of unnecessary wait time (no good visual indication that buttons are pressed, thereby making the user press again) and a lack of indicators that point to additional scenarios. This could be resolved through arrows or, better yet, through making additional scenarios slightly visible below or above instead of only one visible at a time.
Twilight_Realm,
Super fun and very hard
I got this game for free expecting a cheesy, bland game. I was pleasently surprised however as the game is not only supremely addicting and difficult. Maybe I just stink at strategy, but I seem to always lose! I haven't encountered any problems with the app when running it on my Ipod Touch, but it may be because my Ipod isn't very new and only runs iOS 4.2.
bemental,
Excellent game - but with bugs
The game itself is difficult but so much fun to play! The graphics are cute. The transitions between screens are way too slow, though.
Also, the game works fine for a few rounds but then starts to crash. I've had to re-download the game several times. So far it's been worth it but it's getting annoying.
CCCee,
Good
If you are familiar with games like Ataxx or Quadratus, this game is what to expect. The gameplay is similar, but with fancier graphics. Yes, this game is difficult, but I like a challenge. It could use a Pause and Replay button though. And the loading times are too slow. It could use a more understandable transition between levels.
Orlandella,
Could be a really fun game... BUT...
This game could be really fun as it is, conceptually, a very fun style of game. The problem is that the AI is ridiculous, the UI is one of the worst things I have ever seen in any program, let alone a touch only based game, and the loading times make both of things even more frustrating. For free it is worth the try, but until they fix these MAJOR problems, I cannot recommend paying a penny for this game.
