hated_it,
A good, simple tracker
It must be hard to find the right balance between simplicity and features when designing one of these apps. I think this one strikes that balance better than others. The free version includes all the features you need for the app to be useful. Premium has features that appear to have some real value (the meal plans look interesting), but I don’t get annoyed at what I can’t do without premium (I.e. the other app I formerly used recently made the barcode scanner a premium feature. That’s why I switched.) I love how it shows macros for the full day, by meal, and by item right there in the diary. I don’t have to open a separate report to see how I’m doing. I also don’t feel any pressure to buy premium, there’s not a lot of flashy adds or stuff to constantly try to draw you back to the app, like many apps do. While I haven’t bought premium, this level of polite suggestion is most likely to get me to try it at some point. I love that I open the app and it defaults to the diary tab, not the newsfeed. I find such social features to be toxic, so it’s great when they’re easy to ignore. Entering food is a bit clunky, but will get easier as I populate it with foods I eat the most. One feature I’d like (and have requested from other apps in the past) is a simple check box by each food item. It doesn’t even have to do anything, just a visual display. This way, I can pre-enter my meals and check items off as I actually eat them.

One of the best food & macro trackers
This is one of the best food and macro trackers I’ve used. After experimenting with four or five others, I’ve been using this one now for the last six months. It allows me to share my diary with my dietitian. You can scan the barcode on the food instead of having to manually enter all of the information. When I search for a food many times I find the exact thing I’m looking for. My spouse uses the premium version, so he’s able to add recipes easily and get the nutrition information from the recipes within the app into his diary with one click. I wish there was a Family version so we didn’t both have to pay for premium in order for me to get that feature. I wish the water tracking feature wasn’t part of premium, but it’s easy to track your water along with each meal by searching for it as a food. It has the ability to customize the percentage of each macro that you’re targeting for the day so that in addition to tracking calories, I can keep track of how close I am to targets for protein and carbs.
CW5_Z_Killer,
Great way to track calorie intake
Moved to Fat Secret after another program I was using was discontinued. Really like it so far, except for how it keeps and organizes your eaten/entered foods. With my old program, I had to hand enter all my nutrition information, so when I saw I could simply scan the barcode with Fat Secret, I was stoked! Until the next day when I wanted to enter the item again. First issue: If you enter something for dinner, you have to be eating it at dinner again, or it is much harder to find in your recent foods (if it’s there at all…second issue). To get around this, I enter it at the same meal I ate it originally, however this is not accurate and can make it seems like I ate way to many calories in one sitting. Also, there’s no search function on your recent foods, so I have to scan the list to try to find what I want entered. All this could be solved by simply having a searchable “foods eaten” tab. And by foods eaten, I mean not just foods entered. In other words the tab would include anything I searched in the foods tab (and was found in Fat Secret database), and foods I scanned the label for (so I don’t have to keep scanning because I can’t find it), and lastly, foods I manually entered. This may seem like it would quickly become an exhaustive list, and it will. But being searchable, it would be very quick to find the food you want entered into your log.
beefkabob11,
The app fits what I am looking for!
I’m lovin’ this app so far, just into it for a week. I was tracking most of my diet info in a spreadsheet prior and I really like the ease and availability of the food selections and their specs along with their crisp, easy to read presentation, nice Job! I switch between the web app while at my computer and I really like the graphs to see where I’m at. Just started to look through what’s offered in premium and I would definitely pay for these features as I finely tune my usage and become proficient with it, but honestly I think your sweet spot right now is between $2.99 and $3.99 per month. Bigger and more graphs on the mobile and web app would be great! Until people like myself get enough time to use and appreciate the app and assess its value, your higher price is a psychological hurdle, at least for me. I’ve learned to trust my gut in app purchases and the fact that I did not jump in immediately confirms that. I’ll certainly have more feedback as I get into it further. Overall, I think you guys are on the right track with a really nice app and I’m anxious to see what’s coming next!
Tumblr4dayyyyyyyys,
Great app & preferred over myfitness pal
I enjoy the layout & design of the app. I love that it doesn’t bother me too much or shame me when I don’t track calories or log a workout(?) That was an issue I found with myfitnesspal. The online forums also seem a bit more active and encouraging on this app. The app design is simple & to the point. Nutritional facts are seemingly on point. Not a hard app to figure out at all & they have a broad range of food options and choices. I’ve only found it hard to find nutritional info for obscure Asian snacks. In that case, I try to track for something comparable and factor in calories from the packaging to match my food diary. I love the weigh-in function and the data charts available. You are also not inundated by ads and not at risk of accidentally pressing on an ad and opening a new webpage so that’s a big win for me! Great app, I would highly recommend to anyone who just wants to keep an easy and accurate food diary. Whatever your fitness or weight loss goals, this is a great app in general to aid those goals.
angeliaanderson,
Love it
I love using fatsecret. The diary and logs and support from other users is excellent and so helpful in my weightless journey. Love the fact that you can set your own macros and calories or have it calculated for you. Tracking is mostly easy and the library of foods is extensive. That being said I noticed sometimes, not all the time, they are a little off. For example my protein I use has 3 grams sugar and when I scan the barcode the app says 0 sugar. So for people who are needing to be exact on their counts you need to just double check that they have it correctly in the system. Also, when you get notifications that someone has responded to your diary log you have to go through some steps to get to the exact message. I wish the notification center would take you directly to the message for easy reply or viewing. Only other complaint is that you have to use the online version to change your profile picture and get access to certain features but that isn't a deal breaker for me. The app does everything you need it to. Other than that I love this app and will continue using it.

Comprehensive weight loss app that's easy to use!
This is the best weight loss app ever. I have used a few others but they do not compare. You can customize what you want to track, whether carbs, protein, fat etc. It also gives you the full nutritional breakdown of your meals, including salt and cholesterol percentages which is awesome. The recipes are fantastic and you can even participate in community conversations with fellow app users for those that want support. Adding food/recognizing label codes are super easy to do. My 5 stars are more like 4.5 stars. I took off half a star because a few times the barcode reader can be a bit off when scanning items. exp...The label may say 10 carbs or calories etc, but what is registered may be a higher or lower number. So at the end of the day your total count may be off by a few digits. Not sure if it is the fault of the app or the barcode. Either way, it is a mild nuisance that doesn't occur often enough to be problematic. With that being said, the app is awesome and I 100% recommend it.
~£JENNY£~,
Positively Excellent
I had a VSG about five years ago and discovered the app then. It was fantastic, I had access to a community and shared struggles and victories. Also, I could easily log my food and the app was an outstanding tool for a snapshot of my nutrition and calories for a particular food, or a meal, or a whole day’s intake. As I began workouts, I would also record my activity.
A few years have gone by and I’ve managed to keep my weight off. Recently though, I’ve noticed a few additional pounds and decided to get out in front of it and watch my eating. I downloaded the Fat Secret app, expecting the same features as before. NOW it is SOOOO much BETTER! Yesterday I was recording my food and prepared a recipe I’d found on Insta. I was able to enter the recipe and my nutrition for a single serving went into my food log! For someone who eats home more than out, that is a huge benefit!
I love the app, it has been so helpful and skillfully created to meet exactly my needs.
GNewYork,
App Inaccuracies
The app has things like general common vegetables: kale, tomatoes, zucchini, etc where your calorie and carb count is definitely a lot different than that of other apps. This makes it difficult to track the carbs and protein in our meal. It would be great for general items like that if you added the ability to change the size of the general tomato by ounce and adjust calories proportionally.. Instead, we are tied to a medium tomato with XYZ calories... It would be best to take the general calorie averages of all brands of tomatoes and then add them in that way..

There is no place to put Sugar Alcohols, therefor your Net Carb counts are often wrong. This does not bode well for users who are on the Keto Diet or Atkins Diet who are watching their carb counts. It would be great if you can add this line item in the nutrition section or give us the ability to revise carb and calorie counts for known foods.

I cannot add new exercises and commit them to the App Memory.. I do Fitwall Classes, which are a growing trend in the west. Their classes burn 500 calories for a 40 minute class. I have to unfortunately add this class in as a custom exercise every day and it is time consuming.
Maria Koppel,
Good, but...
I have been using the app for two weeks now, primarily the diet diary function. I appreciate the wide variety of options when I search for a particular food. However, the app freezes while I'm searching and adding foods during almost every meal entry. Any items that I have "saved" are lost. I have to fully close the app, re-open, and re-enter lost items for that meal. It's frustrating. Also, I took off a star of the horrible, tacky name "FatSecret". What kind of name is that? Is the app calling users fat? Is the app a secret cure to fatness? It sounds unprofessional.
Finally, there are issues with the customized daily caloric intake. In settings, I altered the standard 2000 calorie preset. But, the diary homepage does not register the change unless I go into settings and then navigate back to the diary. To be clear, the customized caloric intake shows on the settings page, but the diary does not get the message unless I navigate to settings and back. I have to do that every. single. time. I'm using the free version, but it's a low blow to make the free version buggy just so I'm tempted to pay for the subscription.
