I<3PapaSmurf,
Great hex based old school strategy game.
Lots of realism and depth went into this. Very enjoyable game.
Enterprise Car Rental,
Great game
This is a wonderful “simulation” of world war 2 pacific naval combat as you put yourself in the shoes of the admirals of the pacific war like Halsey and Nagumo. The cat and mouse game of trying to find the enemy before they find you is gripping. The developer has put a great deal of research and thought into recreating the decisions that these admirals had to make. “Do I launch an attack now with limited information or do I wait until I am sure they are carriers?” The decision is the difference between victory and defeat. The tutorials are good so it is very easy to get into the game quickly. The developer has been very active and the gradual addition of seaplanes (a good search plan is critical), fog of war, and now submarines has only made the game more historically accurate and engrossing. If you are interested in World War 2 in the pacific particularly carrier warfare, this game is both historically accurate and entertaining!
v234fz,
This is the finest carrier game on the market
I freely admit I did not like the original game. I played it extensively, tried to like it, but it had too many unrealistic features.

This permutation of the game is for the players who want to understand the deadly, unpredictable nature of WWII carrier warfare in the Pacific. You will not know the results of your attacks. I was told Japanese carriers had sunk in my Eastern Solomons game---several times. Each new raid by my aircraft showed they were still afloat (after the game was over I discovered two did sink). Were my "pilots" seeing things or had the Japanese carriers not sunk yet?

Now you have to deal with time allocation. Every aviation preparation task on the ship costs time, such as loading weapons onto aircraft, launching aircraft and recovering aircraft. Large raids take longer to prepare and longer to launch. You must learn to think like a carrier admiral. Try your best, and fate might have Dauntlesses waiting in the sun, and your carriers are doomed. Chance plays a very important part in carrier warfare in 1942.

This is is not move and shoot. If you don't want extra detail, you do not have to use it. The features are optional.

This is a great learning tool. It is also a great play experience, albeit nerve-wracking. You may have a beautiful plan, but it will not survive contact with the enemy.
BrChuck,
PC war game on mobile.
Carrier Battles is a full featured recreation of the early Pacific War Naval Air combat. Those familiar with hex and counter military games will feel right at home. There is an excellent progressive set of tutorials to make mastering the game’s learning curve fairly painless. Veterans of Carrier Battles 4 Guadalcanal will find the updated interface worth the cost of the upgrade. The love given to improving the multiplayer experience is especially noteworthy and initial hiccups have been quickly addressed. Highly recommended for the naval warfare enthusiast.
jimmybiscuit82,
One of the best war games on mobile
This game excellent, ive been looking for an in-depth war game based in the pacific for a while, this has what i was looking for, everything from commanding task forces down to damage control is shrouded in finest detail, the options to create “what if” scenarios make the game all the more interesting while the addition of subs and seaplanes add the cherry on top. I would definitely recommend this for any of those who enjoy playing pacific theatre games.
Fire jet,
Everything I ever wanted in a WWII carrier game
Been long time player of strategy WWII games and this is one of my favorites. One or two player modes and game handles fog of war as you plot your recon and air strikes. Japanese have longer range but are fragil, US air units shorter range, but tougher. Lots of dynamics and random events can be used. I can’t say enough good things about this game! Gregory Wilson
Oldbucki,
Everything you would expect
Very good adaptation of a classic board game covering carrier battles to the iOS. Everything you expect in a carrier game is there including historical ships and maps, CAP, searches, dive bombers and torpedo bombers, all at a good price. If you like Pacific carrier battles, go ahead and get this.
harrysonpics,
Will not play
Between the app updates and iOS updates this game has become unplayable. The game board jumps around, pieces will not move or snap back to previous position. Was very stable before the recent updates.
desertDevil8,
Great game
I’m a hex and counter war game guy, and really appreciate the detail and challenge of this game.
Sightreader,
A tense and suspenseful journey into carrier warfare
Carrier Battles is the fulfillment of the generational dream of a double-blind WWII carrier wargame experience that confronts players with the anxiety-ridden decisions faced by the likes of Fletcher, Nagumo and Halsey - a dream that dates back to the hex and counter days of Flattop, on through to early simulations like Carriers at War, then finally on to the earlier version of this game, “Carrier Battles over Guadalcanal”. Compared to that version, the interface of “Carrier Battles” is more intuitive, active, and engaging: in particular, having hexagons explicitly represented greatly increases the precision and control players have over their air and naval forces without increasing complexity. Very good judgement is exercised regarding what to give players complete control over versus what to have the computer perform automatically (thus keeping the game accessible to newcomers). Rather than spell everything out, some of the more obvious consequences of the interface are left to players to figure out on their own - which might have led to the baffling misunderstandings in the negative review posted earlier. This game comes with everything needed for those wishing to test their wits against the computer in basically every early-war historical carrier battle (no, I would NOT want to try to manage the overwhelming masses of 1944 air fleets battling to essentially foregone conclusions). Subscription options are also available should players wish to play head-to-head (apparently that’s done through email) or if they wish to accept the responsibility of exercising greater control over float planes and stuff. I have not played enough to evaluate these subscription options nor to fully assess the strength of the AI, but what I CAN say is, even if the AI turns out to be weak, that the uncertainty and suspense inherent in double-blind carrier warfare promises a lot of hand-wringing for months to come. As far as suggestions go, it might soothe the learning curve to provide tutorials that are fully replayable “mini-games” rather than mere demonstrations. It also might be nice - in lieu of a full-scale scenario builder - to have a “quick battle” generator that modifies existing scenarios with some very basic sliders to control the randomization of fleet size, mission and duration.
