Thebutcher434,
It’s kinda chess
2 stars since it is technically almost a chess game. It claims to be a learning app but has no real learning capabilities and even the “mistake” or “blunder” pop up appears when really what you may have done was not a mistake if you’re trying to set something up. My other complaint with the game that makes me say it’s almost chess is that I have had many many games end because it says I have a draw when I’m only 2-3 moves from a checkmate which is infuriating. This pushes me more to other chess games on the AppStore (of which there are many) since there’s nothing really making this one unique and it doesn’t provide the teaching it claims.
kline.pw,
Lacks learning features
I recently started playing chess and had exclusively been using the arcade version of this app. I finally tried the App Store version after someone told me about the post-game analysis feature.

I am extremely puzzled why we would get a less capable app in what’s supposed to be the premium arcade version. Worse, there is zero information that these features are missing.

You do get all the bots unlocked for free, but this is not really all that helpful if you can’t learn from your mistakes.

I see responses from the developer from 1 year ago saying they are working on adding additional features. There’s no work to be done. Just enable them. Otherwise just remove this version of the game. If I had started with the normal App Store version, at least I’d be aware that the post-game analysis feature existed for the last 6 months.

I get you want to collect the $10+ a month for the post-game analysis feature, but the solution isn’t to give arcade users nothing.
Bootgoblin,
Disappointing
I was extremely disappointed that the features offered in the Apple Arcade version of the game are limited to the free options in the standard version of the App Store. At least in the App Store version you get a limited number of puzzles and lessons you can access before the paywall stops your progress. I’d hoped the Apple Arcade version would offer a lot more.

Things I do enjoy: the interface is nice and the available matches are enjoyable. There are also a large variety of computer opponents to play.

Good, but lacking
This is a great app, yet it’s confusing to my why it even exists. The developers have built a double of a game they already have on the App Store available to everyone for free. This is Apple Arcade.. why is it even here? This game in comparison is exactly like the free one. Are there plans in the future to add some more features exclusively to this version? 3D rendering perhaps? This is the same 2D platform and your other app. I just don’t understand why someone would rather have this app than it’s original.
Pinkstchz,
Expected more...
I downloaded the app hoping that I would have a better understanding of the game with explanations of the rules and reasons of certain moves. I did not get that. You simply choose a bot to play with, get a few hints, maybe suggestions, and you win or lose. You already have to have the a little more than the basic knowledge of the game. If you’re a beginner and you want to have a thorough learning experience about chess, this is not the game to learn. For an Apply Arcade game I expected a little more.
turdis the time traveler,
A lot of fun but boring after a while
I really enjoy chess, and the boys are all really fun until they are too hard. Therefore, making you play all the old bots again. After a while they become predictable and easy to beat. I feel like another thing they could add is a system where you can play against your friends, they have a feature where you can play online so I feel like it wouldn’t be to hard to implement the system.
Le Froggy Frog,
Horrible!
The fact that this is the paid version too is crazy. If you’ve read the other reviews, you’d know that this has absolutely nothing other than the outdated bots which are all the same. If you try playing online, either some of the columns are missing, or everything is invisible. This has no game review, no puzzles, challenges, analysis, or any other feature other than the bots and the buggy online. There is no reason to use this app instead of the normal one. I wouldn’t even get angry at the devs, but seriously? Fix your game
Mowmud,
Black Bots Easy to Beat??
I love everything about this app. I got inspired to try it out after watching the streaming series but I don’t like/trust free apps. It’s worth it to me to have simple, instructive gameplay in a somewhat secure environment.

Consider this 4.9 stars because although I truly appreciate the diverse bots it seems like the easier opponents happen to be Black. Maybe it’s just me.
PolarBearKev,
Great example of chess
I previously wrote a review that was kind of harsh because the app just crashed when you launched it. However that has now been fixed and I can say that this is a very entertaining and accurate representation of chess. I now highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys playing chess or wants to learn how to play chess. Kudos to the developer for a quick turnaround on that bug fix.
BrotherSkullz_X,
An Ok Chess Game
This game started out like any other chess game you can find all over the App Store, but at least it has different bots that play differently to test your playing style. The problem is that it doesn’t teach you anything. The message will constantly pop up that you made a mistake or a blunder, but there’s no way of going back and seeing what was wrong and what could’ve been done differently. Fun chess game for mobile, not so great on “teaching” anyone.
