Best Chess Practice App, Hands Down
I purchased this app for .99 and I can honestly say that it doesn't get better than this. The chess computer sometimes moves different than the original game, which is great--sometimes I can solve one, redo it, and take a while to figure out based on the other move it made. Chess books as great, but this tops them all and it's dirt cheap. Another plus, for me, is the custom skin options. I love the Leipzig pieces on gray background. It's so awesome and I wish my other chess apps had those pieces. The next best app is tchess. I was hesitant, but the computer and analyser are AMAZINGLY helpful. Spread the word for these great chess apps!
ErnestScribbler,
A great collection of mating nets, and the app can be improved
This app collects over 600 mating nets from real games, from two-movers up to over 15 moves. (Top-flight players resign when the net becomes obvious, but this app gives you the chance to administer the satisfying coups de grace, if you can find them.) would that we could find these positions over the board!

The app has some rough patches that can be fixed. On my year-old iPad Air, it still crashes if I tap "Previous game" even when there is one to select. There are undocumented functions, such as the mysterious "Figurine notion" I'm still trying to observe. Landscape mode, which it lacks, would be nice. A little editing of player names would improve things; I suspect some of the players with different names are really the same ones.

(A previous review commented on the delay when you make a "wrong" move, but I can explain that one: there is an evaluation engine that kicks in and generates a response if you don't make the right move.)

It would be nice to be able to search for mates by your favorite players. (Mine is Lasker.)

All in all this is a very nice collection and a fun app for any chess player to have!
Procrastigamer,
Excellent and very challenging
This is a great collection of exercises on the tactical side of chess. They are organized staring with mate in two, then three, four, and so on. You can skip around as you like and I'm currently at the mate is five section. There's still one mate in four that stumps me though. I love that the computer will play any variation, so you can learn why "your" idea doesn't work. Puzzle hero, another great collection, doesn't do this. I recommend both. Thanks for this great piece of solid work!
Crowboy,
Fun Challenges
I use the ap on muy iPad Air 2, and it works well. I enjoy the ability to choose which level of challenge to take on. It's loads of fun for someone like me, who hasn't played chess in years. The ap is well designed and definitely worth the price.

I wish you could toggle off the blue dots that show where pieces can move. (These dots sometimes fail to disappear when shifting to a different piece). But this is a minor issue overall.
tostromek,
Excellent practice!
Most of the games are from important players. It is so easy for a club player like me to see a good move and just play it. This game teaches me to see the board and the best opportunity there, not just a good one. Plus, it is just plain fun knowing you are playing a real game! You can go to the board and see how the “victim” got into this mess in the first place.
TRMFA-GD,
Make it historical
My major complaint: once one proceeds beyond 'Mate in 4' the computer starts thinking on its own, beyond whatever the actual outcome of the masters' game it's supposed to depict. If the idea is to learn from the recorded game, then what's programmed into it should reflect the actual game's notation, not allow it to respond with other possible solutions, even if other moves are possible. At such a point, there's no way to know what the master players' actual moves were.
Scribbler30,
Powerful Chess work out!
I play a lot of online games against varied opponents and this app has definitely made my play stronger.
It has improved my insight and given me confidence. The fact that the games are classic grandmaster games makes it more real. This is probably the BEST Chess puzzle app I have ever played!
Herc the Dog,
Hard to beat
Can't believe there are do few reviews of this outstanding chess puzzle app. The best puzzles are from actual games and that's what this gives you in abundance. I've spent hours and hours enjoying it. The app is simple and trouble free. No complaints.
bamiller,
The app needs a little work
Nice collection of puzzles. The issues I have are with the app. 1) It should work in landscape mode. 2) I want to be able to turn off the dots that appear when I select a piece to move. 3) There is a noticeable delay when I make a wrong move and no delay when I make a correct move. It's distracting. I would have a fixed delay after all moves.

My Favorite Chess App For Practice
Clean simple interface with the options you'd expect and a bit of trivia that adds a little weight to the bite size tasks at hand. Highly recommended.
