Description

As seen on Alexander Armstrong's phone on the BBC's Michael McIntyre's Big Show

Simon Mayo, radio presenter: "Great app... Everyone loves it... Can I request a Bittern?"

Chosen by Apple for "Apps for the Great Outdoors"

"Identifying a bird by its song is fun and satisfying and this app is a great help" - The Telegraph, 500 Must-Have Apps

"Equal parts wildlife guide and feel-good pick-me-up" - The Guardian, "Top 10 Green Apps"

Chirp! includes songs and calls for 260 birds, and includes special features such as a ‘human translation’, to tell you what the bird is actually saying.

The identification and learning of bird songs can be hard, but not with Chirp!. A short description and helpful tips are given for each song or call, as well as a photo of each bird. Birds can be sorted by commonness, so you can listen to the most common ones first, then move on to rarer species. Or sort by song style, so that you can compare birds that hoot and coo, or those with high pitched songs for example. You can also sort by name, habitat or bird group.

After listening, try the quiz to test your memory. Answer fast to earn a score multiplier and get on the high score table. Experienced birders can use the custom quiz to help distinguish and learn similar songs.

The slideshow section can be used as a way to relax, or switch the voiceover on and see if you can say the name of the bird before the voiceover. This is a good way of competing with the family - who can say the name of the bird first?!

Includes birds from Britain, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Big changes on the iPhone - the app now rotates, and works in portrait as well as landscape! We’ve been wanting to do this for ages, but it was a lot of work!

We ‘ve also added a new feature, a human translation of the song or call, rather like ‘Google Translate’ for birds. Tap the small speech bubble above the image of the bird to see this.

And of course we’ve added some new bird sounds. The new birds are: Goosander, Night Heron, Purple Heron, Water Rail, Whooper Swan, Wood Sandpiper, Savi's Warbler, Bearded Tit, Siberian Jay, and Manx Shearwater.
2.1.3
2013-12-17
This update adds the great sounds of the Rock Ptarmigan, Willow Ptarmigan, Chough, Alpine Chough, Greylag Goose and Canada Goose, and also a new feature - a voiceover in the slideshow section, announcing the name of the bird at the end of each sound (iOS 7 only). This new feature is great for testing yourself informally, or for competing with the family – who can say the name of the bird first?

audl,
I've been waiting for this one
I'm a born again birder living in Germany. With this app it is so easy to use and compare the birds. Other apps I have to go in and out and look for the names before I can see or hear the bird. I want to improve my listening skills and with the game that is included it makes practice fun! Yeah! Thanks for reading my mind. PS. PLUS you can choose your language if it isn't English.
PruDog16,
Chirp
Anytime I feel like I need a shot of England, I just open this app and "move to the country."
Sorebo,
Great app!
I really liked this app :-)
Manelica,
Love it!!
I live in the USA but have a friend who lives in the U.K. who periodically posts pictures of birds on the forum. With this app I can look up the bird and hear the sounds too. This is such a great reference app with pics, sounds and a bit of info. What's neat is how easy and fun it is to look up a birdie here unlike the olden days when you were stuck with a boring reference book with no sounds to help confirm the bird. Besides in today's market no way can you get this much info for a mere USD2.99. you guys rock!! Keep up the good work. The songs of some of these U.K. birds are so rich and beautiful. Yes, I have the chirp USA too. Highly rcommended. What's also neat is the slideshow menu where you can list your favorite birdsongs and just let them play. Somestimes at work where I work night shift, I just let the birdsongs play and it changes the ambiance of the windowless room full of computer and technical stuff and cheers it up and makes me feel like I'm outdoors. cool. A good education tool too to be able to distinguish the song of a bird and identify it by name and picture.
