Fun but limited
I really enjoy playing with this app. It uses the iPhone’s front or back camera and pixelates the view, then creates tones from the pixels. You can vary the number/size of pixels and I find that using fewer/larger pixels results in a more pleasing audio portrait. There is also an option to use a solid color screen whose color slowly drifts through the spectrum, producing a morphing monotone, or a combo of camera + solid color. Altogether a fun and interesting tool to experiment with.
Unfortunately there is no provision to record the audio or video. I have attached my iPhone to a PC and recorded audio that way, but the iPhone’s mic is live so ambient sounds get recorded too, like it or not. The mic cannot be turned off. Plus this method tethers you to the PC.
