Description

“Chromatic Vision Simulator” is a color vision simulation tool which simulates the color vision of color vision deficiencies. This software is developed by Kazunori Asada (Ph.D. medical science and Ph.D. media design), based on the research in color science.

About 5% of men have difficulty distinguishing red and green, or recognizing dark red. Such color deficiency can be classified into three major categories: protanope / Protanomal, Deuteranope / Deuteranomal and Tritanope / Tritanomal.

Color deficiencies are the inability to tell differences between some colors other people can easily distinguish. People with different types of color vision deficiency perceive colors differently. For example, individuals diagnosed as Protan or Deutan cannot perceive differences between red and green, and pink and cyan.

These color visions are predictable by calculating working of the cone cells that perceives the color to some degree.

"Chromatic Vision Simulator" makes simulated images of each color vision type from built-in Camera or Photos and shows you how people with specific types of color vision sees the world in real-time.

1.01 -> 2.0:

"Chromatic Vision Simulator" is updated to version 2.0 with many new cool functions.

- Universal Application
Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G and iPad 2.

- High Resolution
With iPad 2, it works with 768 x 1024 high resolution. You can see details clearly.

- Parallel Simulation
Supports realtime parallel simulations (dual and quad) of different types of color vision simultaneously.
The dual mode shows a normal color vision image (type C) and a one of dichromat color vision (type P or D or T) simulation image together. And the quad mode shows all four types (C, P, D and T) simulation images together.

- Rotation
Supports native portrait and landscape orientations user interface.

- Digital Zoom (max 3x)
A digital 3x zoom is supported. You can zoom in and out simulated images by pinching with two-finger.

- Front Camera
A front camera is now enabled on iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G and iPad 2.

- Storing Simulated Images
Simulated images including the dual and the quad mode can be stored in the "Photo Album".

- Geotag
A "Geometry tag" (geotag) can be saved in simulation images.
A geotag is added when you allow this app to use location data by sliding the switch to "ON" in "Settings" - "Location Services" page.

Jigs-n-fixtures,
Actually really good
I’m color blind, and my daughter is color blind.

I first got this when she was younger to help her mother understand what our daughter could see. She has it installed on her iPad, so she can check whether the things my daughter does make sense.

The one improvement I would like is to embed an Ishihara, dot pattern test, which would allow you to adjust the gammas, until you can see the shapes, and then invert the adjustments to give folks a look at what the colorblind person really sees.

Additionally, once the color blind person has adjusted the gamma values to see the patterns in the dots. There could be a view port the user could use to have a better understanding of what those with normal color vision see. Personally, I’m not “blind” to red and green, but I see only fifteen to twenty-five percent of what a person with “normal color vision” sees. It might be fun to understand why people think things are beautiful.
AmberJFL,
This is amazing for understanding
My grandpa is color blind. Has been for about 70 years now. We all worked together to get him color vision glasses. We figured out he cannot see red or green. The whole world looked so shockingly brown and olive almost like a black and white movie with surprising splashes of blue or yellow.

We used this to decorate the room, choose our outfits, the cupcakes and even a bright red and green rose. He is VERY stoic and even his wife almost never saw him cry but he did. His comment was “You mean you guys see this ALL the time!? I never knew it was so beautiful.”

Use this to understand your family/friends. Then please go get them color vision glasses because it is a beautiful gift that means more than you can imagine. Grandpa is now relearning what colors are called what. This app was a great creations thank you.
seecolorsdifferently,
Wonderful! A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words
If your color blind and want others to see what you see, this is the app you want to use! Ever since I was a child, I’ve always suspected I was color blind. No one believed me because I can successfully guess the colors about 90% of the time. This wasn’t confirmed until I was 21.

Now that I have this app, I’ve used it with my wife, kids, friends and co-workers. Just recently, after taking an Ishihara Color Dot Test, I used this app to show the tester how I see the dots. Absolutely wonderful app!
tk441,
Great app! So glad it still works after all these years
Can’t believe how long I’ve had this app and yet it has never given me any issues. It has been super useful both for design work and as an educational tool.
I just have one small suggestion - it would be nice if the different types were explained somewhere so I don’t have to Google what the terms mean.
Nemozzt,
Thank you for developing this app
We only recently found out that our son (1 yr) has 1/2 chance of being colorblind. Using this app we identified items that if he were to be colorblind he wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Turns out he isn’t. Way earlier than doctors could tell (~5 yr). Saved us 4 years of anxiety.
Simian Pirate,
Great app for seeing a live comparison of color blindness.
I use this app extensively when making presentations for large audiences at work, and live event signage. It has been an invaluable tool to show the sales and marketing departments so they can create content viewable by everyone.
Downtowns,
Thank you from all colorblind individuals
This has been the greatest tool when people discover that I am colorblind. They always ask, “so what do you see!?” Thank you for making it easy to explain what it’s like to be colorblind. I have used this app so much to help people understand what I see
PortolaDude,
Brilliant -- a wonderful tool for color deficiency
I'm color deficient and this tool can show others how I see.

It's truly incredible to have a real-time image from my iPhone camera.
ehuelga,
Priceless
This helps me shop for my color-blind son, so I can pick out clothes, books, and toys that he'll like. I've painted his room, decorated birthday cakes, and even shown his teachers what he sees. It's incredible, thank you!
Shiitakenne,
Excellent for designers
I'm a UX designer, and I love using this app to help me understand whether or not color blind folks will be able to understand an interface. So simple to use!
