Reviews

toriboggan,
Amazing!
Let me start off my saying I don’t usually write reviews for anything even if I liked it. I’ve bought a lot of things this year and liked most of them but I can only remember reviewing one (or was it two?) of those things and I just did that because it’s Etsy so people work really hard on hand making that stuff. But anyways I’m surprised that not that many people have this app because it’s literally amazing. I was a bit stressed over finding a good Japanese dictionary for my self study and this is literally perfect! You can search up a word in several different ways, and it tells you everything about the word from breaking down the word into its separate kana/kanji to breaking down the kanji into it’s different radicals. I love that it has the ‘common’ marking on words when you search them up as well because it’s really important to know if people actually use this word that you’re looking up, ya know? And it also has a little button for an audio of the pronunciation and while it’s a bit robotic, I was so happy that it had that because it gives me a little bit of insight about the pitch and accent of the word so I can feel more confident about it. I’m just rly surprised that this app doesn’t have 1 million downloads but it’s everyone else who is missing out!
Marigliano Family iTunes,
Love it, very useful
You’ll never need another Japanese study app (especially one you have to pay for). This one is FREE! You can draw kanji on the app to find out the meaning, and you can also draw a couple at once. This is really great if you don’t want to lug around a kanji dictionary and search through pages for one specific kanji. This app makes it incredibly easy to look up kanji. There are example sentences for many words, phrases, and verbs. You can also click on any words to see the meaning in those examples. There are break downs of all words and kanji stroke order. I often use the kanji stroke order tool to improve my handwriting. You can type English words to see translations and it tells you when it’s a very commonly used word. This app is really useful for learning kanji/ vocabulary and is a tool I often use when I read books written in Japanese. I don’t use it as a translator though. I use a translator app for that. I would very highly recommend this app to anyone who wants to supplement their Japanese learning. I recommend using this app in junction with a textbook.
Megiel,
Useful, but would be even better if there was Apple Watch compatibility
I’ve been using this dictionary for almost as long as I’ve been studying Japanese for, since 2 years ago. I’ve tried out Midori for a while, but didn’t want to buy it since it was too expensive, so I went for this app instead. Both apps have the exact same content and example sentences, except that this one is completely free, so naturally, I picked this app over Midori. I like the favourite function and they way I can bookmark words for later revision. If the developers can make this app compatible with the Apple Watch, that can allow my bookmarked words to show up on my Watch so that I can revise from my wrist on the go, I’d be eternally grateful. Of course, it’d be even better if I can also search for words from my watch too, using the Scribble function, or through a little Japanese keypad. I had to use Erudite to make it possible to add words to a list that can appear on my watch for revision, but since I’ve bookmarked hundreds of words in the Shirabe Jisho app, it’s a real pain to have to boomark all the words again.
keirachan031406,
best jisho i’ve found!!
so, let me start out by saying, i speak japanese… but i’m basically illiterate in it. i never found the need to know how to read or write it past the basic kana and my given/family name, other than that i simply just speak it. but, as of recently i’ve found myself actually needing to know how to read for various reasons, so i had to go looking for a jisho. i’d found a couple before but i hated the navigation of it (not to mention they required memberships at ungodly prices). when i stumbled upon this app i thought it was too good to be true. i decided to test my luck and download it. i tested it out on some stuff i already knew the kanji for and figured out it was correct, even with slang and phrases! I rely on this app heavily when reading since i’m still not on par with how i’m able to speak and i’d argue to say i use it almost every day. 10/10 do recommend if you’re in the same situation as me or you’re simply trying to learn japanese.
Reaynord,
The one stop shop for Japanese dictionary’s*
Simply the best all-inclusive app out there. Before it scares you away, this is a good thing. Need stroke order? Check, Incredible search functionality? Check. Want to figure out what that kanji you’re looking at is? You can hand scribble in what it looks like to search for it. It has complete conjugations for all verb forms, compound words are all there on the Kanji’s page with multiple example sentences. If that’s not enough, it has a built in spaced repetition system for flash cards of your own creation or through the many prebuilt decks the app offers. Want to learn all of a N# words and kanji? Right there ready to go. All things related to cooking? Pre made deck. I for one enjoyed the mahjong one. It truly is a must have tool for any Japanese learner.

*The one thing that is notably missing is the lack of pitch accent support. It does contain a voice sample but that’s it, but that is far from a deal breaker.
Joesmithminer,
Excellent app! Lots of functionality and info.
I don’t normally write reviews but I’m very happy to give this app 5 starts. Not only is it a great dictionary, but the options for searching words are great! You can write in romaji, English, kana, or hand write the kanji itself (assuming you know the stroke order) to find words. It mentions which words are common, gives plenty of context and examples for words, and is generally just a great app. It’s organized well, runs very smoothly, saves your previous searches to quickly find that word you looked up yesterday, and is overall just a fantastically designed UI.

You also have access to features such as flash cards, notes for yourself, and more really cool features. I have not used many of these resources myself, as I mainly use it as a dictionary supplement to my other Japanese learning material. The Kanji lists in particular are quite neat. Easy recommendation!
IDK Though,
Must have app if you learning Japanese
I already loved this app and used it daily but with the new update which, lets you search for sample sentences, it now has absolutely everything I asked for. (I like it so much I actually voluntarily came to write this review without it asking me to, like some other apps) All the different categories that everything is split up into makes it really easy to focus on a specific topic. It shows you a variety of words/phrases which can help you express yourself better than if you had stuck with the basics taught in school. One of my favorite parts is that it shows you the context in which they're used, by showing a bunch of sample sentences. A lot of other dictionary apps would just translate a word with little to no additional info which is why Jisho stood out to me so much. I was honestly surprised it was free AND ad free. It's worth at least trying out if your studying Japanese no matter what level your in.
Sydsustain,
この辞書はすごいね!
I am an early-intermediate learner of Japanese that has been studying for about half a year now, and this jisho has been a godsend, supplementing my self study anytime I want to quickly look up something. You can type out a word in English, romaji, kana or kanji and immediately get results… even if you enter the conjugated form of a verb or modified form of an adjective, the jisho will pull up the dictionary (plain) form of the word. It’s seriously awesome! I’m not yet at the level where I can fully read the example sentences that are provided for words, but those are awesome to have, too.

I hope that I can continue to discipline myself to keep up with my studies, and if I’m able to do that, you can bet that this app will be a key tool in my studying kit, right alongside stuff like WaniKani, Anki, and ChatGPT.

To the rest of you learners: 塵も積もれば山となる!
My Fellow Gamer,
Best Dictionary App
Literally the best I have found on Japanese, I’ve never seen so many definitions for a single word I have ever seen. It’s the best app I have installed (apart from my games), it gives you so much more then just a dictionary. Flash cards, Katakana/Hiragana, notes and you can go back to words that you just searched up. Amazing in my opinion, I would think that others 1 star reviews are to be appreciated for their criticisms. That’s because when the dev sees them, they can fix the app to make it even greater. So I’d like to thank you for testing this out before I could. Even though they are bad reviews, you can fix them. You can change them when you try it again, everything can be changed. I’d like to see more functions but that’s just for my personal use. Much appreciated thank you for making things more easy for us.
ParadoxVincent,
Perfect. Stable. Thorough. No ads.
I never write app reviews, but if the the Jisho app asked for a review I'll do one. I use this app every day. My thoughts: this app is perfect. The kanji handwriting is so responsive and easy to control that I'll go out of my way to translate more—improving my comprehension, immersion, handwriting, incredibly useful.

Every kanji has a stroke order and instructions on how to properly write it. The search results are perfectly balanced and detailed. I really haven't even began to fully utilize everything Jisho has to offer. It even has search tags for regional dialects (eg. #osb: Osakan dialect). I'm double checking—I can't believe this app was free? It has no ads.

There is no reason not to download Jisho, whether you use it every day or once in a while, it's perfect at what it's made for.
