Description

Try an app that makes your comics look great, makes reading them a pleasure, and takes all the friction out of importing and managing them.

• Ultra clean and simple to use
• Smart upscaling makes even low-res comics look great
• Auto contrast/tint fixes yellow pages and faded ink
• Self-organising library - just drop in your comics and go
• Download comics in the background while you read, directly from your cloud file-storage service or the web
• Upgrade to pro, and download from your PC, Mac or NAS as well
• Parental controls let you flag specific comics as ok, and passcode-lock everything else out of sight
• Single-page or two-up page view
• Right-to-left reading mode
• Post screenshots directly to Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit

Chunky supports CBZ, CBR, CBT and PDF comics, and understands ComicRack and ComicBookLover tags.

It can browse and download directly from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Transporter, Google Drive, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud Drive, Box, Pogoplug, Mediafire and Copy, and you can copy files in and out with iTunes on your computer or download them via the built-in web browser.

Upgrade to Pro and it'll also connect to Mac or Windows shared folders, FTP or SFTP servers, ComicStreamer, Calibre or Ubooquity libraries, and run a mini web and webDAV server you can use to copy files in and out.

2.5.0
2016-02-29
Well this is waaaaay overdue.

• Support for iPads Pro
• Split-View & Slide-Over
• Comics show up in Spotlight searches

And the usual grab-bag of smaller stuff:
• Two-finger swipe to change brightness (check the advanced settings)
• Options to change the zooming behaviour (advanced settings again)
• Support for .cbt files
• Long-pressing the 'download' and 'download all buttons in the file browser now does stuff
• The web-server now also talks WebDAV
• Tons of bug-fixes, notably for the web server, Amazon Cloud Drive and Image Comics support

And one anti-feature: I had to ditch the rotation-lock button because it's not incompatible with supporting split-screen. Sorry.
2.4.4
2015-05-19
The last update was a bit crashy, especially for Dropbox users. This one should fix that.
Also:
• Amazon Cloud Drive support
• Touch ID support in the parental lock
• Rotation-lock button for those that want it (enabled from the advanced settings menu)
• The usual grab-bag of fixes for crashes, glitches, annoyances and trivia

The app's been doing great recently, and that's almost entirely down to you lovely people spreading the word, telling friends and leaving reviews/ratings. Thank you, it's much appreciated :)
2.4.3
2015-03-14
Some fixes and tweaks:
• Web-browser downloads are working again (sorry 'bout that one)
• Fix messed up colours in some comics
• PRO: Better Calibre and Ubooquity support, including streaming from Ubooquity

Laters!
2.4.2
2015-03-03
This update fixes some bugs and general flakiness.

New things in 2.4:
• iCloud Drive folder sync - drop comics into the Chunky folder in iCloud Drive and they'll auto-sync to your library
• Some new background colour settings
• Dragging folders of comics into Chunky via iTunes now works properly
• 64bit support (as if your iPad Air wasn't fast enough already)
• Bugfixes and whatnot

And some extras for pro users:
• Download a folder full of images as a single comic
• Fast PDF mode for faster page-turns and better quality, and it may zap some watermarks too
• Save different colour schemes, including...
• Page tint setting (eg for making a tinted night reading mode)

Sorry for the long wait between updates - I spent ages trying to add iPhone support, but it ended up being no fun at all to work on and was putting me off working on the app. So no iPhone version for the foreseeable future I'm afraid.

If you're liking Chunky then I could *really* use your support - tell your friends, tell a stranger, leave a review or rating, or resubmit one you wrote for a previous version. It all seriously helps a lot.
2.4.1

2.4.1 fixes a bug that caused Chunky to forget you'd upgraded to pro. Feeling a bit stupid about that one :-/

WaltNes3,
Good, but there is room for improvement
Once I lost the ability to use ComicRack, I searched for an app that could come close. Based upon reviews and limited use, Chunky stood out as the likely replacement. Since I use an iPad Pro and like to travel with a large number of comics stored, I was happy that Chunky did a nice job displaying the comics that I loaded. I even went as far as buying the full version, even though functionally that was not necessary as the free features were adequate.

Pros: Excellent clarity, Auto-sorting, Cloud Access, Reads all formats,
Cons: Lags when a large collection is loaded, Auto-sort could be better as the grouping vs series is not 100%, No options to change view, e.g. tiled so as to fit more on the screen, No folder synchronization
EdeTM,
Still The Best
Chunky makes me wish I could transfer my non-DRM titles from Dark Horse and Comixology over. While the guided view in those apps I always sort of liked - I prefer to see the whole panel not panels that are cut off - Chunky gives me so many options that I am in Comic viewer bliss now. I was having issues with displaying my PDFs on iBooks, contacted Image Comics about it and was recommended this reader. Now that Comixology allows me to download Image Comics and certain independent titles as PDFs I have been busy transferring them over to Chunky. Along with the others who have reviewed this app, I can not recommend this app enough. Very, very highly recommended.

Update: Not only is this simply the best comic reader by far I have now found a new use for this app, as a digital magazine reader. I bought a digital issue and now am able to use all the functions of Chunky to view the pages the way I want to view them versus fighting the app, Zinio is the guilty app. I now highly recommend Chunky for digital magazine viewing as well.
Hayami208,
The very best of the best!
Like others have said, I have tried so many different manga/apps and this is the one to get and support! It looks fantastic and makes organizing your mobile collection incredibly easy. My iPad Pro is 70% Manga and 10% Comics. I needed a serious comic app that would be easy to transfer from local network, cloud, and web sites. This app does it all with ease and style. The auto sorting makes organizing a snap and then you can easily adjust and customize. Beyond easy transfers and organizing I could go on and on about the actual viewing of my media. It makes even my low quality media look its best and gives you so many options on how to view and read.

Michael, if you happen to read this, thank you for developing such a fantastic app. I am so happy to support this app both in reviews and financially. Please feel free to use this review in any way to support your excellent work. Thank you!
Comic Book Teacher,
Simple & Clean
The app supports everything I toss at it in the free version, comics, manga, old video game magazines from the ‘90s... but I just had to buy it because it’s clear a lot of work’s gone into it. Clear;y it’s a passion project, and I appreciate it! The addition of an image compiler, saving individualized color choices for moods or materials is just the kind of thing you don’t realize you wanted until it’s there. I love the simple layout and customization offered in both free and paid versions. The truth is that it just works, and better than several apps I’ve paid for in the past. This is by far my most used app for entertainment on my iPad Pro. Oh, and being able to sort and collapse groups is a godsend for my organization. No stability issues after 6mo of heavy use. Kiosk mode looks like something I could use in my classroom, too...
Carlamatic,
was working fine, but now…
i did something the other day and now Chunky does not sync automatically. to get it to sync, i have to Browse iCloud and create a new folder. THEN it will start to sync. i have no idea what i did, but i've tried logging out of iCloud on my iPad, restarting it and my iMac both, deleting Chunky from iCloud and my iPad, then reinstalling, and NOTHING has made it work. :( it's hardly the end of the world, but it's an annoyance.

otherwise, everything seems to work more-or-less correctly, tho it still has the issue where, when i've been reading and then stop and use several other apps, and Chunky has to reload, it throws an error (“Cannot load (null)” or some such) and then has to rebuild the library, which resets ALL of my reading progress. as long as i remember to close the issue i'm reading before i go do other stuff on the iPad, it's fine.
MDiba,
Best comics reader ever!
I hardly ever write App Store reviews, but I am so impressed with this product that I felt compelled to write about it. I bought my iPad mainly to read digital comics, so I initially downloaded nearly every comic reader app to try out. After five minutes reading with this app, I loved it so much that I bought the paid upgrade and deleted all the others. My favorite features are the super-fast uploading via wifi, the smooth manual zooming in and out, and the automatic organization of my books. The one thing I wish this app would implement is a reading order manager for comic book events or crossovers. Otherwise, this app is perfect for all of my comic-reading needs!
Wilcoghost,
Works great for me
I see some negative reviews and complaints that the app doesn’t work. I just want to say I’ve been using it for a few years now and have had zero issues with it. I point it to my OneDrive comics folder, and it reads and has opened every single comic I have ever put on there - cbr and cbz. I love it so much, and get so much use out of it, I paid for the pro version just to support the app developer. If you are looking for an app that does what it advertises really, really well, then look no further. That’s my experience anyways.
Jsonthegreat,
Best comic book reader
I rarely take the time to write app reviews but I have used this comic book reader for years now and my experience with it has been so pleasant that I felt like I needed to share my thoughts.

It really is the best comic book reader on the App Store. It has TONS of options to access your comics and the way that it works with cloud services is unparalleled. The interface is clean and simple yet it is very full featured and you can customize your experience in a lot of meaningful ways.

All-in-all, an excellent app. Download it now!
Liz S 88,
just ok, but a lot of bugs
Paid for pro to set this up with our TrueNas server to read Substack comics but couldn’t figure it out, likely due to our firewalls, oh well. Decided to just link up my old dropbox account and kept trying to pin the comic folder but the app would crash, oh well. But now today I open it up and Chunky is showing nothing in my dropbox folders? So do I just have to remove and add my dropbox account every time I want to DL the substack comics in it? Low key kinda janky lol. Turns out this app hasn’t even been updated in a year? So maybe paying for pro is on me for not noticing that. Hope it works when the next iPad OS is launched!
Remi817,
Super clean and great, I just wish I could get ubooquity to work right
This app is amazing, it has a clean design and organizes my comics. I paid for the full version so that I could grab my comics straight from my Mac wherever I am. However, I can’t get the app to connect properly with ubooquity so that I can stream my comics rather than downloading them. Although I’m inclined to think that’s more of a ubooquity problem than a chunky one, since their interface is pretty meh. This app is already hands down the best comic reader but once I can get that rolling it’ll truly be unstoppable.
