Dr Ricki,
Musical biographies enrich listening
Fortunate to have grown up with my concert pianist mother immersed in Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Schuman & other classical composers of piano sonatas, no reference was made to the life stories. Playing the violin then viola from grammar school through college & grad school, biographic details of composers was omitted as well. How much more expressive would our chamber & full orchestras have been with the humanistic insights KDFC regularly includes I can only imagine. Young & old music listeners & players are lucky to have KDFC providing rich details of the lives & political backdrops these gifted composers. Expanding the diversity of composers , soloists and orchestras is another positive evolution of KDFC.
Thanks for enhancing my daily enjoyment of music since the 1960’s!
Signed
Ricki Pollycove, a grateful, automatic annual supporter.
Sergeivna,
My life would be incomplete without KDFC
I grew up in a small town in Chile. There was a radio station that played classical music parts of the day, my mother would always have it on. When we came to this country in the mid 50s there was a station before Kkhi that also played classical and operatic music part of the day then . . . horror, they went away. But then we were saved by Kkhi and then . . . horror again! They would be going away too! But the gods of music saved us again and gave us KDFC! I’m considering leaving this country because it has become so upsidedown but thanks to modern technology I will be able to take KDFC with me.
I see other comments where people would like to hear more operatic music, so would I.
I have commented on this before, but it hasn’t happened. The human voice is one of the most beautiful instruments when used well.
I have been a supporter for some time and will continue to do so as long as I’m able.
Keep up the good work!
Alowiches,
Life without Mozart would be a wasteland
OK well I had to come up with some kind of a catchy title for my review. I've been listening to classical music since before I was born earliest recollection is the Beethoven violin Concerto. I recall listening to KKHI & KDFC back in the 1960's. Scott Beach did overnight program ending with "That's All" and making clever comments about Keith Lockhart landing on the roof to take over the morning shift. Eventually KKHI bowed out.
Happily many of the KKHI personnel joined KDFC. Many years laterKDFC switch to no advertising format and the rest is (recent) history.
I have been enjoying listening to the holiday spirit channel and have been wondering just how long it will stay on it is almost March and I'm still enjoying it. I my only criticism is that I would like to hear more diversity i.e. less well-known composers such as Adolph von Henselt.I would also like to hear more music by female composers. Thanks for asking my opinion.
ESWVDO,
My favorite radio station.
I was fortunate enough to have attended a school where classical music appreciation was very important. We were taken by bus to go to the symphony 5 times a year. They were special youth concerts, where the conductor would first tell the kids what the music was all about, which instruments would be involved and why, then have the orchestra play. One concert might have 3-4 of such introductions.
At home almost everyone played an instrument. Every family get together was filled with music and singing.
Classical music has been my go to my whole life, for joy as well as for soothing my soul in difficult times. KDFC has been my go to for many years now. Such great programming. Thank you.
Astrid425,
A big piece of my childhood updated
I grew up visiting my grandparents in Belmont. They always had KDFC playing on the radio - 24/7. We would also listen in the car. For whatever reason, the area where they lived did not have the best reception, so there was always a slight amount of static. I actually went many years listening to classical music with static. The great thing about the app is that you can take the station with you anywhere and there is no static. I also like that you can see what song is playing. It’s a great way to learn what you are listening to. I don’t have it on 24/7, but I do frequently start my mornings and my weekends by listening to KDFC. It takes me back to my childhood and I love learning new things from the listening.
D Freidel,
My favorite music station
I recall some years ago when KDFC Classical appeared on my radio dial. I was immediately smitten. The other classical (PBS) station in our area switched to indi-mix music to avoid competition. I’ve been a sustaining supporter of KDFC ever since. I listen every day, mainly morning and evening. I especially love Laura Downes in the evenings because she tells stories about the composers along with playing their music. I also enjoy the California All Night program because they often play more unusual music. My only wish is that the daytime music would be more varied. I hear the standards of Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Beethoven, the most commonly heard, all the time. It fades into the background. Nonetheless, I am so grateful for this station and their offerings. Best music on the dial!
Brainscape Pro,
KDFC in Paris
It is a delight to take KDFC, which we listen to every day in San Francisco, to Paris in June. Last year, we used the Listen Live feature on a Windows/Chrome platform with extension speakers. This year, plugging those into an iPhone/Safari, the interface was not as simple or pleasing, so I downloaded this app. Just lovely: we get our clear and reliable sound 25 hours (perhaps the person who complained about signal drops had poor Internet connectivity and blamed the wrong link in the chain) plus one sees what piece is playing in the dimmed iPhone screen as it plays, something I hadn't realized how much I'd enjoy. This app is a very clean and thoughtful added service from our home public radio allowing us to bring our KDFC friends into our Paris pied à terre of the year.
Gratefull listener,
A long, fruitful history with KDFC
I started listening to KDFC in the 1970’s when I was in college in Hayward. At the time, it had two signals, one on the am (KIBE) dial and one on the fm dial (KDFC). I started listening to classical music as a child. My mother loved and sang along to recordings of opera, and my father had many 78 recordings of instrumental classical music. I started going to the opera at a young age with my grandfather from Italy who modeled to me how to stand up and yell “Bravo!” after wonderful performances. KDFC’s music ignites my memory of these wonderful experiences and acts as a background while driving or puttering around the house. My life would be so much poorer without KDFC. However, I do agree with another commenter that the app needs some work.
Siyaeli,
KDFC is on many hours each day
At home and while driving . I grew up listening to classical music when my dad got home from work. When my husband found KDFC, he had it on many hours. It opened him up to classical music. The app is so clear.
I do have some requests: opera pieces, lesser known composers and pieces, more contemporary international composers, ballet pieces. Although strings are the backbone of classical music, including more focusing on different instruments— wind, percussion, ones typically payed in different national/ethnic contexts. All this would enrich KFDC— already an amazing contribution to my life! I’ve been a sustainer for several years and will continue. Thank you.
Drfut21311,
Grew up w the greatest music
My dad asked what instrument I would like to learn and I answered Saxophone but he noted back, why we have a piano. Well I loved learning the piano setting great groundwork as later I learned oboe English horn bassoon and finally saxophone. I fell in love w a beautiful woman who played tenor saxophone and off I went taking lessons as an adult and joining the local band where she played. Alas we did not end up together but my music always stayed w me and to this day I’m in a community band in Crossville TN forging great friends as well. My music has always been my turn-to when I need support of any nature and it will always alongside no matter what.
