Description

This app is intended to be used in Pam Beach County

CombatCOVID is the Official COVID-19 notification and information app of the County Government of Palm Beach County, Florida, a diverse community of over a million and a half people.

Unlike other apps, CombatCOVID has never used GPS or location notification in its architecture. The app user’s privacy and identity are protected. No names, emails addresses, locations or personally identifying information is required. There is never any location or identity information acquired by CombatCOVID.

The CombatCOVID app uses Bluetooth signals to determine if you are near another user. All users who have been in close proximity to a COVID-19 positive person will be notified by a push notification recommending they get tested immediately, without revealing anyone’s personal identity. Suggested locations for testing are also provided.

Your device’s phone number is encrypted and never shared with anyone, including local health officials. All data and Information about the device being in close proximity with another device is ONLY stored on the device.

Access to the data indicating the device’s user may have tested positive is only shared IF/WHEN the user chooses to share it. IF the user does choose to share a COVID-19 positive result, they are still totally PRIVACY PROTECTED.

OutdoorChickey,
No night time mode any more now way to save battery life
You give us nice options and take them away. Your app stays open on my phone and no night mode any more. I don’t go out / -1 socializing except work. I can’t give you any more.
Signslady,
App has to be running in foreground
I don't like the fact that my phone has to be unlocked and to have the app running in the foreground. My most important concern about having my phone unlocked is that it puts my phone at increased risk of being stolen - and all my information could be easy harvested with an unlocked phone.

Secondly, making sure my phone is unlocked the entire time the app is running, is not only a difficult behavior to change, but it goes against the very fabric of security for technology.

I understand the critical importance of having a quality app for tracking COVID-19 while people are out and about. My only sticking point is the decreased security of requiring phones to be unlocked in order for the app to be effective.
ProcrastinesTheLazy,
Pointless
This app is pointless. It relies too much on the goodwill of the user to input the proper info if they test positive and then it requires the user to keep the app open. Not just running in the background, but open on the screen for it to work...at all times. That goes for anyone using the app. It’s a battery killer and requires too much involvement of the user. What if they send a text or use their maps app and forget to switch back to the Combat COVID app? Then it won’t be tracking at that point. Purpose defeated. Pointless.
Bret's iPhone,
Seems to work but who knows
Seems to work ok. I don’t keep my phone unlocked all the time in case it is stolen so I assume if I bring it out of sleep it sends my location; I hope anyway.

The is a minor issue that if you tap on the running app window it shoots the screen brightness to full but this is a minor issue.

Thanks PBC for the app.
DuckMom20,
Highly recommended!
Me and my family are all using this app, and keeping it open when we go out. I think it will become a part of our routine until this pandemic is over. good to have a technology which respects our privacy.
Vampyrvet,
Seems useless to me
I wanted to like this app. But the only way it works is if you leave your Bluetooth on all the time, leave the app running in the background, (and I have no idea how to tell if it’s running or not), everyone around you has their Bluetooth enabled and this app running in their background, AND if anyone you’ve been in close proximity to voluntarily reports that they have tested positive, USING THIS APP. Really, what are the chances of all those pieces falling into place?
zeinerm,
Makes Sense
App uses personal technology ( phone) to alert people if they come in contact with a Covid positive individual—-all while not disclosing specific time/date/place/individual identity. Excellent.
Vinautomatic,
Running app at all times at forefront is meh
I wish we could get around this requirement. This will be hard to remember for many without attention being diverted to other apps.
hotdogman561,
Does not use the Google/Apple COVID Exposure API
I installed but quickly uninstalled after realizing that this app does not implement the Google/Apple COVID Exposure API, so for me it’s privacy and overall adoption is suspect. In addition, the google/apple api is always running, while this app could be killed by the OS, & thus not doing anything. The State of Virginia now has an app based on that API so it is possible for State governments to implement.
GardenerFlorida,
Not sure about phone lock
I see that one’s phone should be unlocked at all times. I checked with PBC Govt & was told that there is no issue the app b /c of Bluetooth is on.
Thanks
