Description

DataAnalysis is a general purpose iPad App for the plotting and fitting of all types of data that can be formulated as x, y pairs. The program can be easily used by both students and professionals. It is particularly useful for quick analyses of various types of data by curve fitting, value prediction via a standard curve, and analysis of kinetic data including enzyme kinetics.

Data can be entered directly via the keyboard or imported from a text file (.txt), or a comma separated value file (.csv). In addition, data can be pasted from the clipboard.

After data entry the user has the option to average, baseline correct, and/or normalize the data before plotting and fitting.

Plotting of the data is as simple as pressing the Plot button. The axes are autoscaled and the graph is immediately ready to add to a document or presentation. The user has a variety of options to customize the graph by altering the axes, axes labels, graph title, and changing the symbol, its size and color.

Using touch and drag the user can create a selection box allowing the creation of a data subset. Once the data subset has been selected the user has two options: (1) To zoom in on the selected data. Any fitting done in this mode is global (e.g. uses all the data). (2) To zoom and perform a fitting only on the selected subset of the data.

The data can be fit to a variety of mathematical equations by non-linear regression including simple functions such as linear, 2nd and 3th order polynomials, power, exponential, and log functions.

Data can also be fit to more complex equations for such processes as radioactive decay, enzyme kinetics, 1st and 2nd order chemical reactions, as well as gaussian, logistics and surge functions. The fit can be overlaid on the data with different line widths, types and thicknesses.

Lowess Regression (LOcal Weighted regrESSion) can also be used to fit data without the need to specify a mathematical function. Not only does Lowess Regression not require a mathematical function, but also does not require parameters (non-parametric). This fitting method is used extensively to fit everything from election polling to astrophysics data, where the data have a large degree of scatter.

For many analytical situations, the data fit can be used as a standard curve to determine the value of unknowns. This analytical procedure is completely automated within DataAnalysis.

The program output, graphics and text, can be copied, emailed, or uploaded to cloud storage such as iCloud, Dropbox, Box and OneDrive in a variety of formats including PDF, PNG, CSV and TXT. The graphics in PDF format can be edited with programs like Adobe Illustrator™ and AutoDesk Graphic™ as objects.

DataAnalysis also supports multitasking and printing of input data as well as all forms of output.

DataAnalysis has built in tool tips, a comprehensive web based User Guide and videos tutorials all available via the Help Menu.

Version 4.0 of the DataAnalysis is a major update of the App incorporating may of the latest iPad OS features. DataAnalysis now uses the iPad OS Document Browser as the major interface for the user to interaction with existing data files in native, CSV or TXT format. The Document Browser provides options to share, duplicate, rename, move, delete, create subfolders and create new documents. Furthermore, the user can access files stored on iCloud or other cloud storage locations such as Dropbox, Box and OneDrive. DataAnalysis now can perform error analysis in a number of ways. For example, if you have a series of X,Y pairs, in which groups have the same X value, then the DataAnalysis can average each group and calculate standard deviations. These standard deviations can be used to draw error bars on the graph. Other modes to add error bars are also available. The standard curve analysis has been rewritten to simplify use. Output of data in a variety of formats is now much easier by incorporating the iPadOS Share Sheet. You can use the Share Sheet to share, save or print the raw data in CSV or TXT files. The Share Sheet can also be used for sharing, saving or printing the graph, data analysis, or standard curve analysis. Other options are also available from the Share Sheet depending upon what other Apps are installed on the iPad. For example, if the Apps for cloud storage providers such as Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc are installed, the Share Sheet can be used to save the raw data, graphs and results to these locations. Data entry into the spreadsheet can now be done using the Apple Pencil. New Getting Started and Error Analysis tutorials also have been added.

This is the first major upgrade of DataAnalysis. This version is also completely redesigned to take advantage of the new features in iOS 7 (if available). DataAnalysis remains compatible with all iPads with iOS 5.1.1 and above.

New Feature List:

64 bit support on iPads with the A7 processor. Data fitting on large data tests is improved because the Apple LLVM compiler has been optimized to take full advantage of the 64 bit A7 processor.

Tool tips are available from the HELP menu item on each page. In addition, a direct link to the extensive HELP system on the DataAnalysis website is provided via a button on each page that is accessed from Tool tips.

Files can now be deleted directly from the startup page. Simply press the EDIT button, select one or more files to be deleted then press the Trash can. If you decide not to delete the files simply press the DONE button. Tool tips are also available on the EDIT page.

DataAnalysis can now handle hundreds of files with each having up to 2000 points. A sample data file is now included with a 2000 point data set.

Additional keys are available on the keyboard to make data entry easier, including cursor left and right, tab and enter exponent.

Manual scaling of the axis is now available. Simply double tap near the xmin, xmax or ymax
values and type in the new value followed by return

The graph title, x and y axis labels and data points are now saved. Input of axis labels and the graph title is via the Graph Options Popover from the Graphics View.

Preferences for setting of the default X and Y axis modes, points being connected by line segments and the ability to disable fitting all can be set via the DataAnalysis button from System Settings. To speed entry of parameters the return key can be used to move from one parameter input field to the next. The return key can also be used enter value(s) using the Standard Curve Analysis.

Auto scaling can be reset by using the switch provided.

Great app for quick and on the go plots
I just want to first say that this app is amazing. It has helped me track initial kinetics of reactions in the lab so many times that I have been too lazy to pull out my laptop.

I only have a couple suggestions. Mainly, make it available to use on iPhone. I know a lot of the functionalities would be lost, but perhaps a version that is iPhone-compatible would be well utilized (at least by me) if I want to analyze some stuff I plotted earlier on my iPad or even roughly plot while on the go.

Also, I would love to see the ability to make a double-Y plot. Being able to graph two trends on the same plot is essential for some of my reactions and would be amazing to see.

Great work so far, though! :)

Seriously need to add an import function inside the app for CSV files at the very least. Forcing folks to use Dropbox or the mail app to take advantage of that functionality is ridiculous and takes away from what you can really do with the app....

Works as Described
The input and output are not very fancy but if you need a simple x-y plot, this is it. It produces a nice graph and will fit a polynomial line (via regression) of your choice together with relevant statistics.

My first use was to plot some blood sugar readings that I take daily. It did an excellent job.

I was happy to finally find an app to conduct data analysis . Unfortunately the app will not let me import .csv files only the app specified format . Very disappointing

Extrapolation a pain
I Love the concept and understand the potential power, but my first data entry attempt included negative y values; which I am told is a non- numerical character in an error message! (UPDATE: I found a way to fixed this with a less intuitive data entry method)
Perhaps my biggest problem after playing with some spectrophotometry curves and enzyme velocity curves is that once I enter a set of data, plot it, then fit the appropriate curve, then try to use it as a standard curve; any data that is beyond the original data is off the graph and out of sight--the app has no automatic re-scaling function that I can find. My data frequently requires extrapolation and without a large enough area on the plot, I am limited to interpolation.
I wanted to use this with my students, and at my bench. Without extrapolation (& auto re-scaling)...no dice.
I wanted to contact the developer, but the developer website kept forcing me to the "manual" and provided no contact info.

Good. Only thing strange
This is potential very useful, but its usefulness quickly declined for me when I found what appears to be a major flaw in logic. When you plot x,y values, x is almost always the independent variable in any function. Therefore, when I fit a function to a set of data, what I would like to do is input an x value to see what the corresponding y value is. Not the other way round.
If I know that 1 apple cost 25 cents, 2 apples cost 42 cents and 5 apples cost 96 cent and I plot this data, I would like to know how much 3 apples cost. It does not make any sense for me to have to guess a price (y value) to see how may apple I can buy (x value). Although that may sometimes be useful, the y value is what I really want to know by entering the number of apples (x value).

If you can change this, you can charge for the app, seriously.

This is one of the best and most powerful apps I've seen. While some aspects are not intuitive (little about statistics is), it is very easy to use, especially with the handy tutorials that are offered at start up. It's easy enough to turn off the tutoria-at-startup feature, but I advise you to watch them first. They are short but very effective. There are features (such as automatically averaging several Y values for each X value, allowing either X or Y input for calculated values, removing background values from Y measurements, etc) that are usually found in very pricey programs.

this is an excellent light-weight plotting and fitting package. It could use a few more features, which I don't think would be hard to implement. Even without these, it is highly useful.

Suggestions:

error bars

multicolumn data, where one can select the column for x,y and an error bar, and then plot multiple sets from the same file by selecting different columns sets.

weighted fitting: allow error bars to select weights, along with option for constant fraction error, poisson errors (sort of data value) and two common hybrid weights,
sigma^2=y+a*y^2 (poisson error with constant fraction noise for high counts)
and
sigma^2=b^2+a*y^2 (fixed noise floor plus constant fraction error)

of course, if one is allowed to load error bars in the first place, the user could just fill these values in, but automating a few common cases is very convenient.
