Description

Dexteria turns your iOS device into a therapeutic tool that improves fine motor skills and handwriting readiness in children and adults.

Dexteria’s unique hand and finger activities take full advantage of the iOS multi-touch screen to help build strength, control, and dexterity. The app's efficacy is supported by independent research studies, including a 2016 study by Huntington University published in the Journal of Hand Therapy.

• Increases coordination and motor control in the hands and fingers

• Works for kids and adults

• Automatically creates performance and usage reports that can be emailed

• Speeds recovery from injuries and stroke

• Designed in consultation with Occupational Therapists

• Turns the iPad into a therapeutic tool

For best therapeutic results the exercises should be done on a regular basis in short sessions. The exercises are designed to be repeatable and engaging.

The automatic tracking and reporting feature makes it easy for parents, teachers and occupational therapists to identify time on task and progress. You can email the progress reports right from the app itself.

Multi-user tracking is available as an in-app purchase. (Note to Volume Purchase Program customers: Consider buying Dexteria VPP instead. It includes multi-user tracking and you will pay a lower net cost than if you buy Dexteria and upgrade each copy via the in-app purchase. Just search "Dexteria VPP" in the app store.)

JoeysMum,
Definitely an app for higher functioning SN kids
I thought maybe this app would be helpful to use with the kids with autism I work with. However, lower functioning kids may will have a hard time following the directions. Calibrating the screen in the "Tap It" was next to impossible for my kids, even with my hand over hand guidance. Wobbly fingers were everywhere!

This app will definitely be fun for kids who need help with fine motor skills and are able to understand and follow instructions without much hand over hand guidance. The "squish" sound when the crabs are pinched is just gross enough for my 6 year old to to love. The writing section may be frustrating for some kids who don't "get it right" within 2 tries. I even had some difficulty writing the letters and it took me several tries to get it right.

Overall, it's a nice app with some cool activities for kids who need help with fine motor skills.
Mama J is number 1,
Only 1 out of the 3 games functions in a usable way
The crab pinch is the only game that works. The numbers game keeps repeating that we start at the arrow dot (there isn’t one?) and the other game that starts with fingers - I don’t even know what he’s supposed to do for that. He puts his fingers on the screen and then nothing else happens. It clearly isn’t functioning the way it’s intended.
Don Kedic,
Good
Good app for pre warm ups working with students who have handwriting difficulties as well as develop manipulation skills. I'm an OT and cannot wait to try this on my students. Have tried this on my 5 year old and loves it!
Gardenstate Girl,
So sad it won’t work on the new Apple software
As an OT this was my favorite app. But now the Write It game simply doesn’t work. The letters will not trace. I have deleted and the reinstalled the app 3 times. I am disappointed because it was a great motivator for teaching the HWT letter and number formation.

App not easy to work for children and letters and numbers won’t trace red as instructed on app before I purchased. Please refund me
bajebooth,
OT's need this app!
Dexteria - Fine Motor Skill Development is one of the mainstays in an OT's toolbox for teaching kids how to write. Why? Because it looks at learning to write from a developmental point of view. If kid's hands are not prepared to write- meaning the musculature is not there, then they can't control a writing utensil to form letters - Period. Dexteria has 2 games to develop hand skills before the third tracing the letters. The first game "Tap it", helps warm up the hand and introduces isolating the fingers, motor planning and sequencing. Using your thumb as an anchor each finger is called upon to tap a colored triangle. It's sort of like the light up memory game, but for fingers. The second game, "Pinch it" helps develop thumb and index control by picking up first little crabs that are stationary, and then stepping it up to moving targets. Finally, after giving the hands a brief wake up, tracing the letters are introduced. I love how every aspect of this app is thought out, from color schemes to activities. All modes can be translated to off screen games to refine these skills with real life manipulatives, which is the point of using an app for therapy. Data for accuracy and speed can be tracked and there is an in app purchase to expand data collection for unlimited users. Recommended.
Soulfire77,
high score board?
tracking a single child's scores from day to day would be helpful...
some variety in the pinching game would help. 10 levels...could we do those same levels again, only with a slightly smaller animal?

if this game were free i MIGHT have given 4 out of 5 stars, but we paid for it, and it lacks the 'longevity factor' as all of the kids i've used this (albeit, great) program with, have gotten bored in just 2 weeks, even though we are limiting them to 10 minutes of use per day.

my own child (who does not have any dexterity troubles except for her age factor) used this program and got very bored and frustrated with the seemingly tedious letter-writing function. even when i try it, it frustrates me. it is great but you have to tell kids it's only a computer and give them lots of positive feedback so they don't give up all together. we tried it with the stylus, but you can't lean your hand on the tablet while you are writing, and that IS how a normal person would write, so it only serves to function for dexterity issues...which i think should NOT be mixed with academic writing process, as it could confuse children who may struggle with other possible recognition problems, etc.
Elimerritt,
One of the best Apps I have ever bought!
My son is 7 and has DS and therefore fine motor skill engagement is necessary. He also has ADHD making his attention span even on medication short. We have been working on other apps using his fingers to draw letters, but this app has it all! The pinch it program is incredibly awesome! My son worked on the pinch it for more than 10 minutes each setting and requested to play the app over and over. Though he doesn't recognize what the colors do, it keeps him occupied to see more and continually challenges him. At the end of each level he screams "I WIN!!" I would say this is a must have to practice fine motor skills!

Dexteria
As a resource room teacher, I bought this app knowing it would help my 2nd grade student with Apraxia. I have found that ALL my LD students benefit and extremely ENJOY 'playing' these games before we do any writing. Even my dyslexic students now look forward to writing as long as they can "get their fingers ready to write" first!! Thanks for such a useful app!! My only suggestion would be the option to keep track of more than one student's progress. I use this with several students and have to erase, or write down on a piece of paper, where each student ended.
specialappssk,
Wonderful for fine motor skills!
I definitely think Dexteria is a worthwhile app- it works on 3 skills- pinching, finger placement/coordinated tapping of fingers such as in keyboarding, and handwriting (tracing of upper and lowercase letters, and numbers). It gives good auditory feedback to show when your stroke is incorrect and gives you a chance to fix it. It also takes data! It will tell you how many seconds it took to complete each letter for example, or how many crabs were pinched, and so on. A great app to reinforce needed fine motor skills!
