Description

dietSNAPS is not your average diet & food tracker. We don’t count calories. We don’t weigh our portions. We do something very different: we STOP and LOOK and take a picture of every bite BEFORE we eat it. Believe it or not, there have been studies that have found that the act of taking a picture before you take a bite is more effective than simply keeping a written journal.*

Already following a particular plan? dietSNAPS works with every program: from Paleo and Keto to DASH and 5:2, from Weight Watchers to Jenny Craig, to simply just eating clean, dietSNAPS works with you and the way you eat.

We hear everyday from the dietSNAPS community about how easy it is to use and how thrilled they are that they can FINALLY stick to keeping a journal. We look forward to hearing from you too.

Version history

2.1.1
2021-12-07
We launched dietSNAPS in March of 2010. We built it because what we wanted—a daily food log with photos—didn’t exist. We intentionally kept it simple to make it something you could easily use every single day.

Today, more than 10 years later, it’s still downloaded almost everyday. Thank you to everyone who’s ever purchased this app and made it a part of their daily routine.

We want to do more than “say” thank you. We want to show you our gratitude. Over the next several months, we are going to be adding some functionality that you’ve been requesting for a while. In order to understand how you’re using the app, we are updating the app now to capture some analytics. NONE of the information we capture is about any individual and we will NEVER share or sell this data. We simply need to understand how the app is being used so we can build a better app—while still keeping it simple.

Again, many thanks.

Spring36,
Slimmer by the minute
I never have time to write down what I ate when I'm out. This is a great way to keep true to my plan and my diet partner. Thank you for the great idea! Thanks for updating.
Bindylee12,
This App Rocks!!!
I love how simple and easy this app is- so easy to make a habit! Highly recommended!
Abenmaier,
Must have
Must have app!!!! Living with severe allergies and food sensitivities this app is a life saver.
Mancar96,
LOVE THIS APP!!!
I've been using this app daily for 6 months now and it has changed my life!!! It has kept me accountable and has been by far the easiest and best food journal I have ever kept!! I know it had been the key tool that has helped me loose 20lbs and still enjoy the things I love in moderation because of seeing what & how much I am eating at each meal. It definitely helps me stay in control of my portions, i love the time stamp so I can eat every 3 hours and it helps me make sure I'm getting plenty of 'color' in my food choices. It has been one of my top favorite and most used app's on my phone. I tell everyone I know and meet about it! ;)
featherclips912,
Great and easy concept, but crashes and lags
I like the simplicity of the app, but after 5-days of using it, I find it's starting to (1) lag alot. Maybe cuz it retains so many pictures. (2) I also wish the emailed log has the same format as the app log. The emails logs are separated by text and pictures. App log text and pics are grouped together according to their respective times and meals. I need to manually edit all my email logs so the recipient can follow my journal. Also, (3) I tried to email logs by date range and it crashes every single time. I'm hoping to get these things fixed cuz I really like this app for the ease. I hate the tediousness of logging my meals by nutrition and taking pictures is a great and easy way to give me, and my food journal buddy, a quick summary of what I ate.
Robert Weissfisch,
Great and works fast
So far since i have been using this app on a daily basis it seems to work quite well. Also compared to other similar apps in the app store this one loads very fast. The app does lag a little when viewing the Day but overall it has never crashed or had any problems.
One improvement for the developer is to add a history list of items logged so that it is easier to reload commonly eaten items instead of always having to make each day from scratch.
Keep up the improvements and i look forward to the updates.

Design Fireside,
Crunchy
I'm a pretty healthy eater, but I know I'm a snacker. So I thought this would be a good way to be a little more accountable. So after a few days it was quite obvious that I was always reaching for something crunchy. Especially while at the computer, surfing, or watching tv. Diet Snaps is a great tool to make you a little more accountable for what we put in our bodies without really realizing it.
appilyeverafter,
A lot of potential, but needs work
This app is useful for its stated purpose as long as you're just viewing your food photos on the phone itself. As soon as you want to export your photos, perhaps to share with a nutritionist, you're pretty much out of luck -- the 'Export via Email' feature results in output that's a jumbled mess, with photos separated from their associated titles, timestamps and notes. Would it be so hard to export the data in a somewhat coherent and readable format?

It's also a bit of a pain to add entries, since instead of assuming that the current date/time should be used for the entry (and letting the user change it only when needed), the app always forces the user to input the time.

Lastly, a small quibble compared to the glaring problems mentioned above: the app lacks a 'Favorites' feature. Currently, the user has to re-photograph common food items for every entry. Common food photos can be selected from the phone's camera roll, but this is a bit of a hassle.

This could easily be a four or five-star app with a few of the changes mentioned above. 'Looking forward to the next update.
leftoverbeandip,
Could be great.
I've been using this for about a week, and find the basic idea to be great. I hope that the next version will fix some irritations, though:

1. Streamline data entry. The app should make an educated guess as to whether the food in front of me is breakfast, lunch or dinner based on the time of the snapshot.. How about a set of options to tell the app what time ranges correspond with one's typical meals? It should prepopulate the 'time' value, as well, since the app is meant to be used right before you eat something. I should only have to manually enter a time if I'm using a photo from the library. (Even then, the photos are time-stamped, right?)
2. Make the post to Facebook function work. I've tried it a few times with no results.
3. Couldn't the photos be stored as a separate camera roll in the library? That would make them more accessible for other uses.
4. The export format needs much love in order to be useful.
uncjack,
love it, but hate that the email separates the notes from the pictures
This is a great app and easy to use but I was super disappointed to see that when I email my diary the notes and the pictures are separated. Also, my pictures weren't even in order. It makes it very difficult for someone to follow. Also I've had some issues with the app crashing.
