In many ways, the EM:RAP iOS app is like a car, one we keep making better over time. Sometimes we’re excited to tell you all about the new spoiler we’ve bolted onto the trunk, or the sweet cherry-bomber tailpipes we’ve replaced your sensible muffler with. Other times, though, we change the oil and rotate the tires to keep things humming—or in the case of those tailpipes, booming—along.
And that’s exactly what we’ve done with this release. We’ve fixed a number of internal bugs, improved our loading animations, and even increased performance by tidying up our database. We’ve also expanded our error messaging, so you’ll know what to do if something goes wrong.
So go ahead and give our latest iOS update a try. But please, go easy with those tailpipes. They might wake the neighbors.

Winter is here for many of us in North America, and that usually means one thing: it’s time to give your car a little wintertime TLC. Things like putting on a set of snow tires to keep from skidding into the cart corral at the grocery store, or rust proofing your car so it won't crumble to dust the next time you hit a pothole.
We’ve had plenty of time to think about the EM:RAP iOS app while we sat waiting for our cars to warm up, and we decided it was time for a little winter maintenance of its own. We’ve fixed a number of internal bugs, and have revamped the Daily Dose notifications. Now they will take you directly to the video, playing full-screen for you automatically. Additionally, the app will now return you to the audio program you were browsing when you last used the app, plus we’ve fixed a number of visual issues on the profile tab.
So go ahead and give our latest version a whirl. At the very least, it’ll help keep you up to date with the latest in emergency, primary care, and urgent care medicine while you scrape the frost off the inside of your windshield with a credit card.

It’s been nearly nine years since our little app took its first baby steps into the app store. We’ve learned so much since then, and we hope you have too! During this time we’ve grown features, stability, speed, and added so much new and exciting educational content. The current version of the app is completely unrecognizable from its predecessor and we’re so proud of it!
We wouldn’t be here today without you, so we’re extending a sincere thank-you by continually improving our app code and releasing a number of improvements in this version. Like a teen who’s been gifted their parents’ old car for graduating high school, we here at EM:RAP have had only one thing on our minds: speed. Specifically, the speed of our app. We decided to make it snappier to use and faster to start. What followed was more than just tinting the windows and slapping a noisy muffler on your dad’s ’93 Tercel. Instead, we took a deep-dive into the nuts and bolts of the code and eked out whatever performance we could, drastically dropping the start up time while removing the need to pull-to-refresh in order to stay up to date. The app will now do all that for you.
We also took the opportunity to fix bugs and improve the linking between emrap.org and the app. Now you can jump seamlessly between the app and website with the tap of a button. So go ahead and give this update a try, and see just how quickly you’ll get to where you’re going.

It’s a little-known fact that when Bob Dylan sang “the times, they are a-changin’” he was referring to what would eventually become the Internet’s changing attitude toward vertical video. Remember when everyone would rotate their devices ninety degrees to watch a 30-second kitten clip? It seems like so long ago. Well, we here at EM:RAP are changing right along with the times and are happy to announce vertical video support in the apps. Simply enter full-screen from the player and orient your phone however you like, and we’ll take it from there.
We’ve also put together a brand new Library tab where you can find and manage all of your downloads and favorites. What’s more, it’s a place where you can create your own custom playlists—you’re no longer limited to a single list of favorites—so quickly accessing the content you need has never been easier. There’s also a new account screen that allows you to control what kind of content is displayed in-app—Nurses Edition Commentary, Farsi or Canadian Editions, and on and on.

Excitedly, you scour through this blizzard of educational nuggets, determined to locate your favorite program’s latest release. Sadly, on this day, your thumb develops a severe cramp at release 30,492 and you can scroll no more. Defeated, it is at this moment that you realize the meaning of “too much of a good thing”.
We know, we know, we have a bit of a problem! We just can’t help ourselves; we love this stuff and are always releasing fresh content. The problem is that the old app just wasn’t cutting it. With its simple list layout, you simply couldn’t quickly sift through all of the beautiful bundt cake-y EM goodness to find what you were looking for.
So, we rejiggered the teraflops and hardflopified the gigadrives and completely reimagined a totally new way for you to quickly find and enjoy our content. Looking for the latest HD videos? Boom! They now have their own beautiful section and are conveniently organized by category and into playlists. YouTube for EM, anyone? We have big ambitions, and this is a huge step in that direction!

Love the content.
Since the major app update it’s pretty annoying have to load for like 30 seconds before can start listening to content even though I’ve saved it for offline.
Also, although the organization and categories makes sense with the update, it’s actually not as simple to navigate and find content as the simple chronological single page

Excellent content, beautiful app that could use some work
EM:Rap came highly recommend, and the content really lives up to it. There are a lot of free medical education sources, but this is worth the money. Unfortunately, the app still holds it back a little (and it isn't a completely unusable app or anything). If these three things were resolved I'd definitely give it 5/5

1) the most annoying thing that needs to be fixed is to change the lockscreen control to back and forward 15 seconds, not back and forward tracks. When I'm driving and listening and I miss something, I don't want the distraction of having to unlock my phone, open the app, open the player, and then hit back 15 seconds.
2) maybe it works for other people, but I haven't been able to view videos on the app. Even the mobile version of the website has a video option.
3) annoying, but the least of my concerns thus far, it isn't very good at remembering where I left off

Awesome content, app nearly unusable
I’ve listened to literally every episode, often multiple times. There is no better CME content for emergency medicine. The app functionality is rudimentary at best, however. I abandoned it in favor of the native iOS app, though I can only access content going back a year with that app. To be useful, the app must:
1) Remember where you left off. Having to scroll back years of content to restart an episode you started (and have to select the chapter to boot!) is too frustrating to be worth it.
2) Remember your speed preference. I like to listen at 1.5 speed. I have to reset the speed each time I open the app.
3) (less pressing but would be great) Let you complete CME within the app.

Love the content, app is terrible
I love listening to EMRAP and EMA every month and have been doing so for years. Ever since the app “revamp” it has been increasingly terrible to use. Downloads are in process forever and never download, downloads are impossible to cancel, it plays one segment at a time, lots of wasted space on each screen, have to log in to the website in a browser to access written segment summaries, and when they say things like “see the photo associated with what we are talking about” in the details, i never can. I am sure they spent a lot on this app development but there is a lot to learn from more effective podcast apps like Overcast. Even updated this morning again to see if that helped to minimal avail. App problems ongoing for months

Content great, app is unusable
The new update as made the app even more unusable than it used to be. Every episode has tripled in size (stating it’s 11 hours long instead of the typical 3-4), the layout makes it impossible to see what I have and haven’t listened to or what new content may be available. If they release a new procedure video but I don’t know it exists, I won’t know to use the app as a resource on shift. It also now states that every episode I have completed is now incomplete. AND it takes 15 seconds to load the app every time you use it. It’s honestly so dysfunctional I can’t see myself renewing anymore unless it’s fixed.

Playback issues
The big problem with this app is the playback. It often forgets where it last stopped and rarely resumes at the correct spot. It doesn’t multitask well. If you keep it running in the background and play is interrupted for some reason, when you reopen the app it brings you to the homepage, not what’s currently playing. It would also be nice if the 15-second forward and back buttons were integrated into the control center of iOS, like Overcast does. Just study Overcast and that’s how playback should be! Great content and I like the written summaries, but certainly lots of room for improvement.

“On my device” feature
It would be excellent to have a feature in the app, like a button on the upper right or something, to be able to toggle to “On my Device” or “Downloaded”. As I’m simultaneously viewing new EMRAPs and catching up on old, it would be great to be able to see the list of episodes that I have downloaded to my device (without having to scroll way down the lists of episodes).

Glitchy app
I love EMRAP content and the website, can’t say enough good about it, but I find the updated version of the app awful to use. It takes a long time to load, doesn’t save my place very well, and most importantly to me, does not allow me to download episodes. There is a function to download each segment individually but it does not work at all for me, it just gives an eternal spinning wheel with no progress. As I often use the app to listen while traveling outside of cell reception, this is a huge frustration!

Love EMRAP hate the “upgraded” app
Ever since the most recent “upgrade” to the app I have had nothing but problems with it. I have deleted and reinstalled multiple times with no correction of the issues. Emailed in to see what was up…. “Delete app and reinstall”. This doesn’t fix it. Frustrating.
Can’t download episodes now without them being almost a gig or more?!?? Why? Used to be straight audio was 3-400Mb. This doesn’t help when you are on lower speed internet but even on higher speed it won’t do it.

A+ content, app needs a 504 plan
This App is failing! Downloads don’t work! I specifically purchased a subscription because I have a 2 hour commute yet I can’t download, much less listen to the content. I have contacted customer service via email and they blame it on my internet connection yet I can stream Netflix just fine and my Audible books download and play beautifully. It’s disappointing to find reviews from a year ago that mention these same problems and still no resolution. Come on Emrap! You guys are better than this!
