Description

The Flight Risk Assessment Tool or “FRAT” is an iPhone and iPad application with a companion Apple Watch application. The watch application provides current METAR reports right from your Apple Watch. The FRAT was designed to aid pilots in identifying safety hazards and the risk level of each identified hazard during preflight planning. It is primarily targeted for general aviation pilots, but can be used by any pilot to aid in Risk Management.

Every pilot, from an excited student pilot taking his/her first flight to an old crusty well-traveled airline pilot, uses Risk Management whether they know it or not. A pilot evaluates his/her physical condition, weather, the airplane, fuel availability, time constraints (get-home-itis), and many other potential hazards. The pilot then determines the likelihood of an identified hazard causing a problem during the flight (risk level). Unfortunately, this step may not be given the importance it deserves or evaluated realistically.

Occasional flyers may approach Risk Management somewhat informally and use minimal resources to gather information (possible hazards) about their flight. Airline pilots, on the other hand, have the advantage of a Risk Management system staffed by professionals already in place that evaluate the risks and mitigation strategies for the intended flight.

The FRAT provides the General Aviation (GA) pilot a systematic checklist of questions to aid in evaluating the risks inherent during a flight. The FRAT is not meant to make a "Go-No Go" decision for the pilot-in-command. The pilot should use the FRAT during preflight planning to identify the hazards and potential risk level that he or she may encounter during the intended flight. Identifying hazards and the resulting risk level will enable the pilot to develop a more effective mitigation strategy. A mitigation strategy is used to eliminate or reduce risks to an acceptable level or may lead the pilot to delay or even cancel the flight if the risk factor is too high. The FRAT can be an integral part of a GA pilot’s overall Risk Management system.

There is an endless list of questions that could be posed in a risk assessment tool, but the FRAT is limited to those applicable to most VFR/IFR flights conducted by General Aviation (GA) pilots.

The FRAT also includes in-app use of safety resources such as FAASafety.gov Safety Notices and Safety Discussions as well as information on Risk Management. The FRAT provides easy access to 1-800-WXBrief, Aviation WX, NOTAMS, TFRs and METARs all without leaving the FRAT. The latest update also includes direct access to the FRAT Tutorial via the Information page that is accessed by clicking the information icon located in the upper left hand corner of the main menu.

Update due to changes in the AviationWeather.gov site.

Now FRAT offers iPhone users a widget (large widget only) that allows you to track weather reports for up to 7 default airports at a glance. Touching any airport line entry opens up a new expanded view of the current METAR report for the selected airport. The new weather view also offers airport information as well as an airport diagram. The medium and small widgets for iPhone provide basic weather at a glance and when clicked will open up the METAR report for your default home airport. The Apple Watch app now offers expanded selections for most watch complications that offer basic weather to just the FRAT icon to open the watch app and view a METAR synopsis.

2.5.5
2020-10-11
Updated for iOS 14.0 and WatchOS 7.0 as well as adding a new Aircraft Risk feature. This new feature, suggested by a user, allows a pilot to modify the Total Risk depending on the choice of aircraft being flown. For example, a pilot may choose to modify the Total Risk of a flight if placarded systems are inoperative and although not specifically required by FAA Regulations, the inoperative system will increase a pilot's workload and thus the Risk Factor. On the main menu, selecting the information icon in the upper left hand corner allows a user to confirm the version installed on their device. The information screen also includes a button to the FRAT Tutorial.

Radium88-226,
Cannot Select IFR
Last update broke stuff that previously worked. I cannot select IFR. The app stays in VFR mode. Suggestion: please test functions before release. Or, let some of us do a Beta Test before release. iPhone Xs with IOS 13.4.

Thanks for the quick response! Clicked on the “Dark”spot for IFR and can now use correctly. Looking forward to the next update that I can download. Great tool!
DJP111,
Great now!
This is a follow-up to my “Initial reaction + update” review. Upgrade to 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ because all issues I mentioned in previous review have been fixed within just a few days. Outstanding developer response! I have no doubt this tool will be beneficial to aviation safety, and most importantly to pilots like me, will save lives by helping to measure and mitigate risk factors before every flight. Thanks!
Asabernathy,
Simple and easy to use
Copies the free FAAST team FRAT tool which requires downloading to a PC/MAC and requires Excel, at least on the PC. For only $0.99 you have the convenience of using it on your iPhone or iPad making it much more likely that it WILL be used. It is interesting to see the various numerical values assigned to each element. One neat extra feature is the map which gives instant lat-long coordinates.
Live-to-fly,
Reinstall works -amended review
I am amending my first 1- star review to a 4 star and here’s why. After uninstalling and reinstalling the app it worked fine. So apologies to the developer for the earlier review. I am hesitant to give it a 5 star because I would prefer to be able to put in my own (or my students) personal minimums or maximums i.e. crosswinds 15 KTS in the PAVE checklist. But It’s a good starting point for anyone learning risk management in aviation and easy to use.
Brain adoc,
Great VFR app
Not sure how beneficial it is for IFR pilots but I was surprised by how much information I was able to access. I find it more useful than my EFB for some things. I fly in the mountains and the weather cameras can be extremely helpful. The weather changes literally in minutes at some of the airports and the visual is helpful.
Skppjp,
Helpful app
This app is very useful and easy to navigate through. The functionality is easy to use on small screens such as the Apple Watch. Great product!
sbav8or,
Just needs one more thing...
Great concept, with simple and clear execution. 5 starts if you add the ability to set up multiple aircraft in the pilot profile. Risk assessment can be a lot different if flying a single vs. twin or airplane vs. helicopter.
Millertonlakerentals,
Safety First
Quick and efficient tool for taking flight conditions and assessing level of risk. Helps pilots make educated real time go / no-go decisions.
Socaltilt,
Good app; fix the icon.
This is a great app, Apple Watch integration is a neat feature. Only issue is the app icon needs to be fixed for iPad mini and iPhone 6. They not proportioned and appear distorted. Other than that works well.
