Description

Fun Educational Apps says "it's downright addicting. I had to force myself to put the app down to write this review!” “Who would have thought fractions would be this fun?” Steve Lai at teachingwithipad.org.

“This app is not just for students: It is great for adults to review what they learned in math class those many years ago. Highly recommended for everyone!” --Steve Lai.

Fractions+ is build on the Mathtopia+ game architecture. Mathtopia+ won the Children’s Technology Review’s 2013 Editor’s Choice Award for Excellence in Design.

Fractions+ users master everyday fractions and their equivalents, including halves, fourths, and eighths; thirds and sixths; and fifths and tenths.

Fun and addicting, Fractions+ builds mastery through repetitive matching of related concepts. Rewards and achievements encourage speed and accuracy.

Game play consists of a matching game, followed by solving a tile-swapping puzzle to advance. The puzzle game is similar to popular jewel swapping games but with multi-touch swap, enabling more complicated and challenging matching for addicts of tile-matching puzzlers.

Fractions+ isn’t just for kids. Like all tile-swapping puzzle games it is a great way to reduce stress. With Fractions+ has the added benefit of keeping your brain sharp.

Mini-lessons teach each concept and can be reviewed, skipped or repeated. Lessons and content are aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

Here are the Common Core State Standards covered by Fractions+:

CCSS.Math.Content.2.NF.A.1 (Grade 3) Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2 (Grade 3) Understand a fraction as a number on the number line.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.2a (Grade 3) Represent a fraction 1/b on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into b equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/b and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/b on the number line.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3 (Grade 3) Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3a (Grade 3) Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3b (Grade 3) Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3c (Grade 3) Express whole numbers as fractions, and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.C.6 (Grade 4) Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10.

Our goal is to create easy to play, educational, and engaging educational games. Applying research into motivation and brain science, our games provide immediate feedback, discourage random selection, and use intermittent rewards to keep players playing until they’ve mastered concepts. Adults and children alike can benefit from using Omega Labs apps, such as Fractions+, Mathtopia+ or its buy as you go alternative Mathtopia, and our Roman Numerals game.

Our star achievement system shows when a user has attained the ability to recall information automatically without thinking. Three stars equal automaticity. Two stars signals that with practice the user is on the way to achieving automaticity. One star indicates the user is just beginning to practice the concept and needs lots more practice.

For those who like instructions, the apps comes with interactive tutorials, but most users can jump right in and learn as they go.

Fractions+ animations are powered by the Sparrow Framework.

Frances Amato,
A math app to have...
Fractions + is an amazingly engaging app that truly makes learning math fun. Teaching fractions are such an abstract concept to many children but this app starts from the most basic concepts and makes learning fractional parts into a lovely game. The game is fast paced and fun so children were concentrating and waiting for their chance to put everything into order and make the pieces disappear every time they got a fractional match right. My favorite part is that each level is a progression a child is building and reviewing what they know, while learning what comes next. It is wonderful!
I love that this app includes picture representation of fractions, numerical representations and that you can use the metric or standard system, which was a nice inclusion. Overall, I like that this app can be a wonderful guide to teaching children how to identify, locate and match fractions. There are so many levels within the app. The children were going past twenty and still more to go! Plenty done and more to do, this app will not disappoint.
lynngus,
Fabulous!
This is a great app for all levels of learning: from matching the pictorial version of a fraction with its numerical counterpart, to equivalent fractions, to decimal representation, to measurement representation--both metric and standard. The entertainment value comes into play when the player completes a 'card'. The player races against a clock to clear their card. I'm currently working on level 28 and have not finished all that is offered in this app. Children and teachers will find this app to be incredibly engaging--it is very difficult to stop playing! (and learning!)
It is well worth the cost; buyers beware--you will become addicted.
Sodaguy,
Fun and educational
I generally don't enjoy math very much but this a very fun and unique math game that appeals to children and adults. Once I start playing it's pretty difficult to put down. It is a perfect balance between an educational app and a fun game. It is challenging enough to keep it fun and interesting but not so much that it keeps you from wanting to play it.
llindseymomof4,
Fun!
I think Fractions+ is a fun, engaging app that will allow your child to grow in their knowledge of fractions. Children will love the gaming atmosphere and not realize they are learning fractions. Each level is a progression, teaching your child step by step how to locate and identify fractions.
CharsReviews,
What fun!
Fractions+ is a fantastic game to help solidify fraction concepts in a visual and fun way. Their are 30 levels of game play which allows one to cover fraction basics in detail. Most importantly the fast-pased game keeps the child interested in the game while solidfying the fraction concepts taught. The instruction before each level can be improved by having an audible instruction in addition to written text.
M.L.I.S,
Easily Distracting
This app does an excellent job of making matching forms of fractions entertaining. I got distracted by the various goals of the game and would prefer that it only focus on one goal - matching fractions. Young users like the game probably because it does not focus on the work of fractions the entire time, but personally and as a teacher, I would prefer more focus on the work.
Gals90,
Great educational app
This app is a great way to practice fractions. It is very addictive... Your child may not put it down!
Kaylee-girl,
Fun way to learn!
The game itself was fun, so it kept my kid's interest. He didn't even know he was studying! ha! Perfect.
