49601Kitty,
A fun game for any level of player
I have had other Gin Rummy games for my iPad, but they made me too frustrated. I swore the games cheated because I so seldom won. That may sound like sour grapes, but it’s no fun to lose all the time. I accused the game of cheating because (unlike a human opponent) it knows exactly what cards I had in my hand and what cards were still in the deck. Too many times I needed one card to win, but that card didn’t come up until just the moment the other player knocked and won. It knew exactly what card I needed.

I realize there are players out there who are very good and can remember every card played. I am not that good. I like games where I can win at least a quarter of the time. This game has three difficulty settings. The first level is very easy and is for children or beginners. I started with that but quickly got bored with it because I won every game. I am now enjoying the middle or average setting.

There is also an advanced player setting. I may never switch up to that, but if you are able to remember cards already dealt and can figure out what cards the other player has, that setting is for you. Meanwhile, I am happy with winning half the time. It’s enough challenge without being frustrating.

Needs work
The first problem, you should be able to manually move your cards around. But you can’t. There was an instance where I should’ve had Gin and the program did not see it. The computer tells you if you have gin, I had no choice but to knock. Even though I had Gin. I have a screenshot.

Another problem is, if you have two runs going, with two different suits, and you pick up a card. The program then rearranges them to sets (ie 777 and 888) which may be the best for points value. However maybe that’s not the route I want to go, because of cards that have been let go or cards that I know are dead in the pile. And when that happens you have no idea what the card was that you just picked up, it’s not highlighted or anything so you have to sit there and mentally sort through the cards trying to figure out what card you want to discard.

And the final problem which I just saw the AI do, Was he had three or four of the nine’s, and then he started discarding them? Because I had discarded them so I knew when I let go of the third one, oh shoot he’s going to have three nines. He picked it up, and then later started letting the nines go. OK well you could say maybe it didn’t go with this hand, well I called Gin and There was no reason for him to let those 3 nines to go. The next highest card he had in his hand was a six. And he only had one set of melds. So basically you’re playing with an idiot and 9 times out of 10 you should be able to knock or call Gin before it.
Gfezhjcxrsvh,
Don’t call it AI then stack the deck
Anyone else notice the card that comes up when it’s your turn first? Nearly always a face card.. every 10th one is an A,2, or 3... nearly never a 5-9. I’ve got about 120 games in (60 on the “hard” level). I’m batting around 60%, but it takes some quick work in the first 3 turns of the hand or it’s time to start dumping your highest cards. AI knocks quickly.... too quickly... too often.
The deck is rigged as well. Throw away a 9 and two come off the top of deck right away. This happens very often.
As others have previously stated, the best strategy is to undercut AI. It’ll knock ASAP in “hard’ setting. Recently, I came back and won after being down 10-95. AI knocked twice (in a row) before I drew a card, but I undercut and knocked my way back. TIP: if you get deadwood to 5 or less, go for gin or Big Gin. It doesn’t, so you should. Developers should not have it auto arrange melds like it does. They should also not call it AI. I just learned the game and haven’t tried all the apps out there, but I’m giving this rating of 2 stars for the obvious rigging. If you can’t build a proper computer program, don’t call it AI and stack the deck.

Pretty decent game but dumb AI
This is one of the best gin rummy games I’ve been able to find in the App Store. That being said, it’s pretty easy to game the computer into losing every time even on the highest difficulty.

If you are more aggressive about getting rid of high value cards then you are about trying for melds in the 9-K card range, typically you will pick up some medium value melds along the way and end up with pretty low dead wood. Then rather than trying to go for gin, if you get rid of your highest value card every turn your dead wood will almost always be less than 7 by the time the computer knocks. This means maybe 65% of the time you win the hand through undercutting the computer and get 25 points plus the difference in your deadwood. The computer almost always knocks before getting gin so the other outcomes are the computer wins the hand but only gets the difference in deadwood (which should be a relatively small amount) or if the computer gets a good hand and knocks early you might lose the hand by a lot but you will almost always win the game through undercutting.

I haven’t lost yet. But the reason I say all this is really to let the developers know cause I hope they improve the AI. Any human player would learn to stop knocking and letting the other player undercut them.

At one point I will delete and remove this APP, it doesn’t make sense to just play the Easy and Medium games which I had a very high wining % on both, I can’t take anymore the cheating that the Hard is doing, discarding the same card more than once, having just few deadwood points when I knock, and the most fastidious thing is that almost in all the hands she knocks or Gin in the 5th to 7th hand, that’s not a normal type of game, my scare is 69% in the Hard, that’s mean that I know how to play, I like to loose, it’s part of the games, but not because she’s programmed to, and it’s not randomly, it’s premeditated, hence that’s cheating
Like this game very much, but I’m very frustrated the way it is set up, too easy, medium still easy and hard is cheating, I don’t feel too god wining on the easy and medium, and I hate loosing because the hard is programmed to keep my score low
Fix that, make the hard result randomly and fair
Meantime I will give you 1 star score every time I post a review, let’s see where your score goes
Respectfully
Kayemteee,
This is not Gin and not very good
There are huge flaws in the system. The computer draws far more cards than any rational player in an effort to amass low point cards in order to knock. In this game, you can always knock with ten or fewer points and an under knock is over rewarded with 25 points. When I play real Gin, we use a second deck to determine what the maximum knock point total will be in this hand and award only 10 points for an underknock. The key to consistently beating the game (65% of the time when set to hardest) is not to knock when you can and try to lower your unmelded point total while waiting for the computer to knock. I win most games by underknocking the computer, something that should be rare. More significantly, I have never been under knocked by the machine after playing thousands of hand while I underknock the machine thousands of times. Finally, the biggest issue is that it has redealt me the same card that has previously been discarded; there is no integrity to the game. It also seems to frequently throw a card that you could have used until your last discard; seems programmed to taunt you. A well designed game should show you the remaining cards in the deck after someone wins the hand to prove the cards are really available. So why do I still play? Because I win even on the hard setting.

Gin Rummy
I am really enjoying your version a lot more now that I’ve figured out why at the ending I wasn’t penalized for certain cards after my opponent knocked out. The faded cards left in my hand were able to be played on my opponent’s points...as in a live game of rummy!
I was upset in the beginning when I thought I should have lost because I held more points after the knock than did my opponent, and yet some cards were faded out leaving me with less points in my hand thus winning the game. NOW I see what is going on, WHAT FUN!!
I do find it frustrating however, that I can’t move the cards around in my hand! I could have broken up my runs and made 3 & 4 of a kind thus rummying out sooner. Let’s work on this, okay?
Other than that, it’s a super game!
I really wish you would allow us to make our own points instead of you switching our points around. You have lost me a few game by doing so.
Katherine Lea,
It’s the only gin rummy game you need.... the dealer never cheats either .
Trust me--these guys know what they're doing. I have to admit I played this game for days before I realized that unlike “500” and other versions, Aces are only low, melds are not valued by contents or scored in any way. When a player calls Gin or knocks, all unattached cards *from both hands are deducted according to face value ..... *usually less from the player who knocks 1st but not always... And here’s where I’ll let the app directions explain it further since I’d never heard of knocking until this game. But it all made sense quickly and I was hooked. At first I wished I could arrange the cards in my hand manually, but I’m sure the clever people behind this app will develop that option and in the meantime it’s kind of nice to have it done for you. This is the only card game I play. Wishing same people would make a few others. They sure as heck know what they’re doing.
Dave Edrich,
Addictive BUT Rigged
I like this game. You paid for the extra levels. The rest you pay for is just the options which is not a big deal. What I hate about this game is that on the hard level and at tim s on normal level, the computer generated shuffle and drawing of cards s not random. Almost every card that I toss out is picked by the computer hand. When ever I throw a card out the next card is get is the lower or higher suit card. That is not random. It occurs over 95% of the time. This l are to the computer deck to get knocks very often I’m a pretty good player and can only play on the hard level. Easy level is a joke. At least I can reset the game to a new game if I feel that my game is total rigged, therefore not skewing my stats. Is it worth paying for the added level and options. It depends if you like the game at the free level. If yiu ant t get a bit frustrated, then definitely pay.
Arnie0305,
AWFUL ALGORITHM!!
If you want to play a game (NOT on the EASIEST level) that is actually competitive, this is NOT the app for you! Easy level, you win all of the time, 2nd level , you win most of the time, the 3rd and 4th levels are so rigged for the computer to win that it’s not much fun! The cards are NOT randomly dealt but dealt totally in favor of the computer. If you hold face cards, you will 90% of the time draw small cards and if you keep the smaller cards, you will only draw high cards from the pile!!! Plus whatever cards you are holding hoping to draw what you need and seem to never get it, however as soon a you discard from that suit or run, the computer immediately discards what you were needing. It’s no fun, when everything is stacked against you and the computer wins 99% of the time. The computer 99% of the time keeps nothing but cards below 9 so if you are hoping to keep low cards or have a run in low cards, FORGET IT! The computer 99% of the time will not discard anything below a 9. The ONLY good thing that I can say about this app is that it has good graphics!
