What is a gluten free diet?

A gluten free diet is an eating plan that excludes foods containing gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). A gluten free diet is essential for managing signs and symptoms of Coeliac disease (also known as celiac disease) and other medical conditions associated with gluten. A gluten free diet is also popular among people who haven't been diagnosed with a gluten related medical condition. The claimed benefits of the diet are improved health, weight loss and increased energy

What is coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is a condition where your immune system attacks your own tissues when you eat gluten. This damages your gut (small intestine) so you are unable to take in nutrients. Coeliac disease can cause a range of symptoms, including diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloating. Coeliac disease is caused by an adverse reaction to gluten, which is a dietary protein found in 3 types of cereal:

- wheat
- barley
- rye

Gluten is found in any food that contains those cereals, including:

- pasta
- cakes
- breakfast cereals
- most types of bread
- certain types of sauces
- some ready meals
- In addition, most beers are made from barley.

What causes coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition. This is where the immune system (the body's defence against infection) mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. In coeliac disease, the immune system mistakes substances found inside gluten as a threat to the body and attacks them. This damages the surface of the small bowel (intestines), disrupting the body's ability to take in nutrients from food. It's not entirely clear what causes the immune system to act this way, but a combination of genetics and the environment appear to play a part.

Treating coeliac disease

There's no cure for coeliac disease, but following a gluten free diet should help control symptoms and prevent the long-term complications of the condition. Even if you have mild symptoms, changing your diet is still recommended because continuing to eat gluten can lead to serious complications. This may also be the case if tests show that you have some degree of coeliac disease even if you do not have noticeable symptoms. It's important to ensure that your gluten free diet is healthy and balanced. An increase in the range of available gluten free foods in recent years has made it possible to eat both a healthy and varied gluten-free diet.

orange1268747,
Love this app
This app is so helpful I just gotDiagnosed with celiac disease and I had no clue what was gluten-free and what contains gluten I am loving this app so far but I don’t know if it works on other stuff or if it’s just food because some shampoos and body wash also contains gluten
CG233,
Accuracy?
So I’ve been gluten free for about 5 years now & sometimes stores or certain brands are good about labeling gluten free stuff. Other times, not so much. That’s why I downloaded this app because I’m a little tired of looking for those labels or reading ingredients. Just downloaded this one & scanned a few snacks & cereals. Not 100% accurate. This one cereal actually has a lot of gluten but the app told me that is was gluten free. The app does say that it is only a guide. So just beware. It might be accurate most of the time, but not all the time.
spider monster,
Cross contamination
1- I don’t see any indication that a gluten free product was “manufactured on equipment that also produce wheat or gluten products”

2- It would be good to indicate if the product is “certified gluten free” for celiac customers

3- Also would be great if this app maintained history of items that were scanned, be able to categorize history or search it and recommend alternatives. See Yuka app. for reference on some of these items.
hmarley,
So incredible helpful
This ap has helped so much! Makes grocery shopping so much easier! Thank you so much!!!
richhalopanda,
Not completely accurate
So I was testing it out and I scanned my gator aid and it said it wasn’t gluten free but it also said some completely different drink so idk how it works but it seems pretty good because I scanned a bunch of other stuff that is all gluten free and it said it was. Please fix this.
Maycie bird,
Good job
It really helped my child
jgals,
Stupid scan again pop up is in the way and there is no way around it
The scan again pop up is right across the description - so you can’t read if it’s a warning or it says it’s ok.
metroplanner,
Inaccurate
I’ve scanned all my confirmed gluten free food…every one of them came up as having gluten. I’m talking full-on gluten free brands like glutino. The app confirms the exact product and everything, but states it has gluten when it is certified as gluten free.
Mikelmcneill,
The best scanner at the App Store
Thank you
Wolfie23yay,
Says it’s gluten free when it’s not
