In what’s become the largest community event of each calendar year, Grandma’s Marathon weekend has now become the unofficial kickoff to summer in Duluth and the surrounding region. It’s a time that our city and community throws open its doors to welcome participants from all over the world and introduce them to our race and way of life in northern Minnesota.
The kickoff event to Grandma’s Marathon weekend since its start in 1994, is the William A Irvin 5K. This 3.1-mile race on Friday evening starts and finishes near the historic William A. Irvin ore boat in Duluth’s Canal Park. The opening salvo to race day, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon is now arguably the most popular event on Grandma’s Marathon weekend. Since our inaugural race in 1977, Grandma’s Marathon has grown into something much bigger than just a 26.2-mile race along the scenic North Shore of Minnesota.
So get ready to once again tie up your laces for another year of memories, miles, and human might.

Easy to navigate
We found everyone we were following, the navigation in the ap was simple, information was prompt. Couldn’t have asked for better!

Not reliable live tracking at start of race
The live tracking was not reliable at the start of the race until we received the first official update at the 10k mark. We were very nervous that our daughter who had trained well and was her 4th marathon was injured because she was pacing 2 minutes slower than her actual pace.
Having said that.... it was a great app for the updates and for being ready to cheer her on near the finish line!
I would definitely recommend the app, just know initial live tracking may not be reliable.

Live runner tracking incredible
We have been coming to this marathon for years and struggled with the runner tracking. This app made everything sooo easy!

Barely Functional
Most races will have a web site tracker. Grandma’s forces you to download the app. It’s barely one step above phoning people in Duluth asking if they’ve seen your runner pass by. The estimated progress is nowhere near accurate. Very few split stations. No leaderboard. Don’t remove rogue chips from results. Splits are late - not even sure how that’s possible in 2023. Trying to follow a potential qualifier and I’m guessing he calls me before his result pops up.

Not helpful on race day
Easy to navigate but actual tracking is significantly off. If you are using this to track your runner/find cheering location this is not great.

Shoutout Video not working
Very disappointing - it’s not working on iPhone or iPad, and the race is only two days away.
